NASA’s Mars rover, Curiosity, began analysing a rock called “Jake Matijevic”, which was named after the surface operations system chief engineer.

Matijevic passed away in late August, two weeks after Curiosity touched-down on Mars; and NASA is honouring Matijevic by naming Curiosity’s first test subject after him.

Curiosity will examine “rock target Jake” using its arm-mounted Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer and its mast-mounted, laser-firing ChemCam.
