Microsoft is said to be contemplating its own smartphone, although the decision is hinging on the success of Windows Phone 8 and the Surface tablet.

Multiple inside sources told the Verge that Microsoft has no plans to introduce a phone in 2012, though the company is considering it “Plan B”.

With these rumours, and Microsoft entering the hardware market with the Surface tablet, a possible reveal of a Microsoft phone in 2013 is likely.

Microsoft’s Surface tablet will launch on 26 October 2012.
