Cassette tapes are making a comeback, as the audio platform of yesteryear is set to become an effective storage option.
Researchers at Fuji Film and IBM have experimented with magnetic tape coated in particles of barium ferrite, which allows for up to 35 terabytes of data to be captured on a cassette that measures 10cm x 2cm.
The ultra-dense tapes use far less energy than disc drives, although a downside is that they are slower to access due to the mechanical nature of cassette tapes.
