Google says that its Google Play store has reached 700,000 apps for Android devices.

The number echoes Apple’s last iTunes reporting, which saw the iOS app store reaching a similar figure.

Apple has always had the edge in the number of apps in its store, but Google has quickly caught up by luring developers into its Android platform, taking advantage of the rising popularity of Android devices.

Apple also recently announced that it has paid $6.5 billion to developers since the App Store was introduced in 2008.
