Roccat are well known in the PC world for manufacturing solid gaming peripherals. Until recently these products were not available to local consumers but a change in the market has seen their mice, keyboards and other add ons released in South Africa.
The Roccat Kova – the company’s flagship gaming mouse, is a good example of what they do best. This package offers a solid gaming mouse for a reasonable price (roughly R600), which in comparison to other mice of the same calibre, such as Microsoft’s Sidewinder range, is highly competitive.
The Kova features a 3200 dpi optical gaming sensor which, in every game tested, performed more than admirably. The average gamer will find no fault with the responsiveness within fps titles such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or Borderlands due to the 40 inch per second maximum speed and 20G acceleration the unit incorporates.
Although generally accepted as industry standard for gaming mice the 2 metre USB cable which is packaged with the Kova also makes a nice addition to the overall offering.
Physically speaking the Kova is attractively designed and features a number of embedded LED lights which illumate in a series of several colours while the mouse is switched on. Included are two rubber grips on either side of the unit complimented by two programmable buttons above them on each side. We found that these often got in the way while using the mouse, resulting in some rather interesting gameplay in the event that the buttons were used unintentionally.
One of the features that set the Kova apart from other gaming mice is the double sized scroll wheel. Although this may seem rather trivial to point out a larger scroll wheel is often invaluable in fast paced first person shooters where the player does not have the time to reload and chooses instead to toggle between weapons mid game.
In addition the Kova also features driverless operation. This means that it can achieve what many other gaming mice do but without a bundled driver CD or need for installation. This kind of plug and play attitude is a welcome change to other gaming mouse set ups which require the user to insert weights, install drivers and undergo a complex programming procedure just to apply personal preferences.
Overall the Kova offers a solid package for gamers who are looking to ensure high end performance for a reasonable price.
