Last Horcrux brings more spam, says Symantec
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the last movie of the Harry Potter novel series and it is being released globally on July 15.
The movie has another few days before it appears in theatres and it has already become a hot topic for spammers.
Symantec reported similar spam activity previously for Part-1 in the blog Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows of Spam.
In the past, Symantec has observed spam promoting the Harry Potter novels and accessories at discounted rates, as well as 419 and online pharmacy scams invoking Harry Potter.
The goal of these spam campaigns is to harvest personal and financial information.
“Because Harry Potter fans are excited to find out what will happen in the final instalment, we expect that spammers will continue to distribute more and more Harry Potter spam leading up to the final film’s release since this is their last great chance to exploit the Harry Potter magic,” Symantec said in a press statement.
Norton has pulled together a quick check-list for those Harry Potter fans to help them steer clear of cybercriminals:
- Put yourself on high alert – Don’t open e-mails or attachments from people you don’t know, even if it sounds too good to be true. Online criminals commonly use shocking or sensational headlines in e-mails to lure people into falling for online scams.
- Don’t click on that link! – Beware of shortened links found through social networking news feeds – they may be redirecting you to fake websites laden with malicious software. Manually enter website addresses into your browser to make sure you’re getting the news from trusted websites.
- Protect your computer – Use trusted security software on your computer to block threats and make sure you’re keeping it up-to-date. Use Norton Safe Web Lite and Norton Safe Web for Facebook – free, downloadable tools that identify risky sites before users click on them in search results and on their Facebook news feeds.
