This is most likely due to Optimus. It could be that in mint it's defaulting to the intel GPU and ubuntu is trying to install the Nvidia GPU, perhaps! Not having optimus support is not the fault of the distro. It's a anti-competitive issue between Nvidia and Intel and as usual the consumers suffer for it. but there has been strides made recently to fix the issue.

Jacques when you plug in the dongle click the network indicator, right at the bottom do you see the "Enable mobile broadband" option. Click it then setup your broadband connection as always, unless it's already setup. This is a new feature of 12.04, it got me stuck as well the first time I installed. Dongle works just like it always has, just had to enable it.

I have similar issues on a new i5. During the install all the windows are corrupted and have really messed text. After booting the screen just turns off...

Interestingly enough I tried with Fedora 17 as well and ran into the same issues. I think the problem could be Gnome related OR the graphics drivers for the new Intel's don't exist yet...

Ubuntu is not a Linux distribution in the same way Android is not a Linux distribution. They are independent operating systems which simply use the Linux kernel. This is an important misunderstanding.

Applications written for "Linux" may indeed work on Ubuntu but it probably won't. It would be more accurate to say that Ubuntu is a Debian distribution. Android runs Android apps, Ubuntu runs Debian apps.

Both platforms can be hacked to run "Linux" apps but the average user should not expect to be able to pull this off.
