Telkom 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades continue

If you have not been bumped up to 10 Mbps yet, don’t lose hope – upgrades to Telkom's fastest ADSL offering are continuing

In August many 4 Mbps ADSL subscribers were fortunate enough to be upgraded to 10 Mbps free of charge.  These upgrades occurred in regions where there is a high ratio of 4 Mbps subscribers and where exchanges are served by ADSL 2+ DSLAMs and Metro-Ethernet links.

Many ADSL subscribers who were not upgraded expressed disappointment at missing the cut, but all is not lost.  Not only are the upgrades from 4 Megabits per second (Mbps) ADSL to 10 Mbps ongoing, but Telkom exchanges are also being upgraded to use Metro Ethernet links rather than ATM.

This is according to Stephen Lewis, Head of Strategy at Telkom, who told MyBroadband in an interview at SATNAC that while they could not provide an exact figure on the progress of the 10 Mbps ADSL roll-outs, users will continue to see upgrades from a maximum of 4 Mbps to 10 Mbps.

Lewis added that Telkom will also continue to upgrade exchanges from using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) links to Metro-Ethernet which is far more scalable and provides for cheaper bandwidth in the long run.

Lewis highlighted that there are various factors which determine whether 10 Mbps upgrades are performed on ADSL lines, including:

  1. The exchange must be ADSL 2+ capable
  2. The exchange must be served by Metro-Ethernet
  3. There must be suitable ADSL line conditions (i.e. maximum 1.8km from exchange)

Lewis further explained that exchanges with existing ADSL infrastructure won’t be upgraded to ADSL 2+ unless there’s a business case for it.

This essentially means that if there isn’t an adequate concentration of high bandwidth users in an area capable of making use of ADSL 2+ the exchange won’t be upgraded.

To make it easier for ADSL subscribers to know if they are in line for 10 Mbops upgrades Telkom recently launched their DSL 10Mbps Availability Checker
