MTN Business’ Gallo Manor data centre has experienced numerous problems over the last few years, and its headaches continued with another outage today (23 June 2011).

Numerous websites and Internet services were affected by the downtime because of the high number of services hosted in this data centre. The affected companies include iBurst, Hetzner and of course MTN Business itself.

The outage started shortly before mid-day, and was caused by an Eskom electricity outage followed by dual backup-generator failure at the facility.

MTN Business’s Edwin Thompson explained that the generators kicked in as expected when the electricity died, and after the first generator failure the second generator took over as expected.

The second generator however failed around 30 minutes after it took over from the first one, which meant that the data centre had no electricity feed.

Thompson said that the generator problems were unexpected as they underwent full testing only two weeks ago.

Eskom power was restored at around 12:00, and services started coming back online soon afterwards.
