MWEB is getting ready to launch their latest product: a mobile voice over IP (VoIP) product which will provide users with a way to make affordable phone calls using their mobile phones.

MWEB ISP CEO Derek Hershaw said that they have recently re-developed “MTALK Webcall” into “MWEB Talk”, adding a wide range of new features.

One of the improvements is that customers can now easily download and install the “auto-provisioned soft phone” on their PC and laptop.

Mobile users can use MWEB’s mobile (3G/Wi-Fi) VoIP app which will be available for Apple iOS, Android and Symbian platforms.

According to Hershaw MWEB expects to launch this new VoIP product within the next two months.

SME market also gets a new service

MWEB is also planning a new VoIP service aimed at the SME market. “In the SME space, we plan to launch a cost-effective VoIP gateway plus interconnect-based LCR product that provides high call concurrency on an ADSL line,” said Hershaw.

“Traditionally, high call concurrency SIP trunks were only achievable on (expensive) leased lines. Here again we have a large base of Business ADSL customers that we’ll target initially,” said Hershaw.

The MWEB ISP CEO is very bullish on the VoIP market in South Africa, and is confident that MWEB will become a big player in this space.

“Voice is rapidly migrating from voice-only TDM connectivity to converged voice/data over IP as VoIP technology matures. Witness the growth in the IP-PBX market, hosted PBX, mobile voice apps, IP phones and the like,” explains Hershaw.

“Customer awareness of VoIP is growing. Given our IP services pedigree and large broadband customer base, I believe MWEB is very well-positioned to play in this space.”
