A cable break on the SEACOM system meant that many South African broadband users may have experienced a slowdown in international speeds on Friday morning (25 May 2012).

According to a Cybersmart network notice, a break in East Africa on the TGN-EA cable system, which is used by SEACOM, was to blame for the latest problems. “The break is terrestrial and located in Egypt and is scheduled to be repaired by Egypt Telecoms,” said Cybersmart.

MWEB’s network notices confirmed the problems, saying that they are “currently operating at reduced International capacity due to a SEACOM outage. Customer impact should be minimal,” said MWEB.

SEACOM said that they experienced a service affecting outage that started in the early hours of Friday, 25 May, between Abu Talat (Egypt) and Marseilles (France).

“All SEACOM customer circuits are back up and stable. SEACOM will continue to monitor the situation and provide feedback as required,” SEACOM said at around 10:00 on Friday.
