Telkom launches GETMO, offering music, movies and mobile content
Telkom is extending its digital content portfolio with GETMO, offering Internet users a legal way of downloading music, movies and mobile content from their new portal.
In partnership with Arvato Mobile South Africa, Telkom offers Do Broadband customers an option to access a wide range of digital content. The GETMO club card gives unlimited access to a virtual archive of music, movie and mobile content.
“Telkom invested in this partnership to avail a differentiated, world class, all inclusive entertainment product to our Do Broadband customers at an attractive price,” says Godfrey Ntoele, Group Executive for National Sales and Marketing Operations.
On 1 October Telkom Do Broadband launched the GETMO service at a monthly subscription of R60 a month to existing Do Broadband customers. Other customers can subscribe at a monthly rate of R70.
Included in the subscription is the GETMO club card, a membership card that allows access to the “all-you-can-eat” entertainment download service.
GETMO is a content offering, delivering licensed full track music downloads, music videos, movies, ringtones, graphics and mobile video clips and games to PCs and mobile phones.
The GETMO club cards are currently accessible to the public through Telkom Direct stores nationally.
GETMO’s content is sourced from major music labels, as well as other major or independent entertainment content owners.
Problems
Initial testing of the GETMO service indicates that a bit more work is needed to provide customers with a seamless experience.
The website took a long time to load, and while the registration process was easy the slow response time of the website will frustrate users. The service also only seems to works in Internet Explorer, something which may not go down well with Apple or Linux users.
The interface will not pose any problems for experienced Internet users and voucher activation – which provides unlimited access to movies, music tracks and basic mobile content – was easy.
To find music or movies to download is not too difficult, but again the website’s slow response time makes the experience unpleasant. Even on a 4 Mbps ADSL connection the service was crawling and even entirely unresponsive at times.
A closer investigation revealed that the website is hosted internationally, which means that this service will not be available to Telkom Internet and Do Broadband subscribers who are using the company’s free local bandwidth offering.
Users looking for the latest movies or older Hollywood blockbusters may be disappointed with the limited range, but the music catalogue appears to be more up-to-date.
This service is a major step forward in the local digital content arena, providing subscribers with an affordable way to access music and movies. Unfortunately the current usability of the service puts a bit of a dampener on the overall user experience.
