This is quite interesting.
If mines shed jobs (pun intended), how can they run at optimum.
In other words, mines need to shed jobs because they need to cut back on power usage. But if the power is on for a few days uninterrupted, they are then short of workers. This means that mine output either has to decrease, regardless of the power situation, or the mines lose money if they have too many workers.
Steel works are in the same predicament.
This quote appears to be related to steel workers:
An agreement was reached between the unions and employers that in the event of a blackout, employers had an option of sending workers home and paying them a minimum of four hours wages per day.
However, Hlengani* said he did not anticipate any job losses, saying it would be "making a mountain out of a molehill".
Say what? Do all these spokespersons go to the same school of stupidity? It IS A MOUNTAIN - PEOPLE WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS - even if it is just a handful, people will have no work.
*Hlengani is NUMSA's spokesperson.
