wait, is that site for real? Can I register for that service, and assuming I never go over the 250 mb limit will never have money charged off my card?

Someone else confirm MYISP's services please - will it let me use the 250 for international webpages? Can I sign up for MYISP even though I have an adsl account with telkom?

I have an account, get 250mb a month free, they dont even have my banking details. It is international and you can use it even if you have a telkom account.

there is a setting that allows you to pause grabit once you only have X amount of free HD space, check what its set on. Cant tell you off hand where it is, but its there:)

is it possible to post newsgroups to usenet with a standard saix telcom account? I thought you needed a username & password to do so.

But first use QuickPar to check that all your files got downloaded correctly, otherwise they wont unrar successfully.

Hi Guys,

Hope I'm not breaking any protocols asking my question here. I'm a total newbie with nntp and I downloaded a nzb file from newsleech to see how it works. When I tried to download the files, Grabit said that the files were not on the server. I was under the impression the nzb file caches the files from the origin server to the server I've specified in Grabit?

I'm using GConnect and news.saix.net. It seems to be connecting toi the news server as far as I can gather.

Thanks.

Do not speak of such blasphemous things lol :erm:

Mebbe the nzb you downloaded is old. I personally use alt.binz so can't really help you there if the age of the nzb is not the problem. You'll have to dl from another site I rate of you want that specific file... Wait isn't that a problem which usually occurs with grabit??? Make your life easier and just use alt.binz.

use grabit to download a group off the server. This will at least tell you if the server is responding to your requests.

You can search for a newer nzb here.

Forgive my ignorance, but is news.saix.net up and running at the moment? I haven't dealt with news servers for quite some time but fired up GrabIt today but can't get a connection. Then tried to ping news.saix.net but it simply times out. Is the news server offline permanently or only an issue today?

Or any other alternative local news servers I can use with a SAIX based account?

1) I don't think you can ping an NNTP server, it does not respond to ping requests.
2) It should still be running, but may just be extremely overloaded. That is usually the case, just leave it running and hopefully you will eventually get a gap.
3) There are no other local servers, except one very slow IS server for the IS backbone (doesn't work with SAIX).

Geesh, so I basically just got lucky with the connection then. :) I actually bought a prepaid local only Gb at Axxess so I simply could have used my WA local only account anyway, since it's the same news server. Oh well, it's cheap enough.

Just glad I'm getting full speed on the line now.

There is your problem

WA is on the IS network. Thats why you could not connect to the saix server.

Try the IS news server with your WA account. Should connect immediately

No, you get both IS local and SAIX local accounts at WA. Just depends which account you signed up for. The prepaid local accounts are on SAIX, I did a traceroute to confirm. It's indicated on their product page (http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/prepaid/) as well.

WA has local on the IS network (http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/is_local/) too, but it's not prepaid.

Yes, you can supposedly convert them using MagicISO... (But it is not Free Software)

If you have a http://www.nzbsrus.com/ account. They have premium account now on special. You pay with sms.
The total cost is R90 for a lifetime premium account. And you get a code smsed to you. I just got myself a VIP membership.
Newshost doesn't host all the NZB so its nice for the users that actually use the site. R90 not that bad actually. :-) Just a tip.

Hey, been using the news.saix server for a while now and found i could pretty much get anything i wanted off there, then i went and bought a 30 gig is local only account figuring the IS servers would be just as good.

My problem is, i can get some stuff fine, but other things just wont download and if they do i get between 3 - 5kb intermitently. but if i go back onto my saix account they download at full speed without a problem. The stuff is new (like 1 to 7 days old) but IS servers dont seem to cache it.

My question is, why is the saix server "better" than the IS server and does the IS server have selected groups is caches and if so, what are these groups? Is there some way of finding out if IS has cached a certain file from a certain group?

Any help would be grand :)

To save bandwidth for SAIX only download with IS when it has loads of downloads and its a new release. Cause that will mean its cached.

When you download a file and it is going 3-5kbps it is not cached, if it is going between 38kbps and 420kbps, depending on you line speed, it is cached.

Hi, I need some help with regards to downloading lists with news servers. I got my self a Giganews account & was adding groups then having to download the lists. First of all they seem to be very big, not sure if im missing something but It said I downloaded like 10GB of lists. The other strange part is that it said I was downloading up to speeds of 34.5 Mbps/4.3 Mbps

Trying to post a link with a screen shot, but getting the following:/ "Thank you for posting! Your post will not be visible until a moderator has approved it for posting."

what are you trying to get from the News Servers?

SAIX has one News Server for binary files and another news server for plain text posting. If you are just doing plain text then you should use the other server.

I am not sure how it works with Giganews though.... most of us only use it for Binary files. I have not downloaded a Groups list in years!... but yes they can be quite large.

I have a problem -> I've grabbed a file that is RARed in 20-odd 15MB RAR files. According to the PAR files there is no damage on the files, BUT according to the SFV the file R00 is corrupt (and the file will not extract in WinRAR or 7Zip, both programs also say that R00 is corrupt).

Now how do I fix this? I've grabbed that part (R00) three times and every time it's the same story, has anyone ever experienced this and if so how did you solve it?

Let's take the news servers as part of a Big company providing the news server as part of a "bundled service" with x amount of gb's usage per month. Be this local ot international bandwith as it may.

Now this big company is intent on providing a service as the more people use their services the more profits they can shoe to the investors and shareholders making them happy shareholders and investors. Now at some point these investors and shareholders starts to get uneasy with the prospects of new companies entering the field which will at some point in future reduce the current profits.

Now these investors and shareholders are screaming at the big company to "protect" their investment. Quick way for this to happen is to lower overheads. In this case to reduce the amount of overheads the big company decides to keep the amount of bundles sold but to reduce the amount paid for usage within the monthly bundles. Since a big monopoly (which also have investors and shareholders) keep prices high, the only way is for the company to reduce the amount of usage in the bundles.

They find a brilliant way which is called "uncached content" by reducing available time of "cached" content available on the news servers it now takes longer to utelise bundles therefore reducing the amount used within bundles.

Now this creates smiles on the faces of investors and shareholders again while the users stay somewhat content as they still recive the bundle and they still want the content although it is now a "reduced" service.

and I was wondering about the news server address. I tried the SAIX one, the IS one and the axxess one that I found on this thread, but none of them work. Does axxess' news server only come with the local cap package, or should I be looking for some paid news servers?

I grabbed the PAR file and a PAR2 file with 4 recovery blocks already but because the PAR files say that R00 is fine I can't repair it.

I still cannot understand how the PARs can say all is fine when the SFV says otherwise and nothing can extract it?! Perhaps the RARs somehow got corrupted before the poster even created the PAR files, they might explain part of it but would be highly unlikely...

It's fine, the file I was trying to get is on RapidShare :)

The Axxess express accounts are on the IS network, so the SAIX news server won't work. The IS news server should: news.is.co.za

Crashing the network of your ISP?

Use SSL connection to your news server. They cannot block port 443.

Anyone been having issues with "password protected" rar files? I use newzleech to find the .nzb files and 5 of my previous files downloaded and when I try to unrar them, I have to "click an html" link for the password. Naturally I didn't, but just wanted to know if anyone else have been experiencing the same

Fortunately I've been using my WA trial account for some of it, so just wasted about a gig in total of my afrihost account.

Naturally I didn't, but just wanted to know if anyone else have been experiencing the same

Fortunately I've been using my WA trial account for some of it, so just wasted about a gig in total of my afrihost account.

I've grabbed two of those myself. I clikced the link, it takes you to some site where you must fill in surveys to get the password (the surveys then generate cash for the uploader) and when you extract the file there is another text file inside the password protected RAR telling you that this is a fake but at least you've helped the uploader make some cash.

It's annoying to say the least. The trick is to grab the last RAR (the smallest one) of the set and open it. If there is another big RAR in there with the html saying something about "click here for password" or "read before opening" then you know the whole thing is fake.

Thanks for the help at least.... the whole is a fake then because there's only 1 rar file and an html file and when I try and unrar it prompts for the password.

The entire site at Merlin's Portal is now 100% free for all NZB downloads.

It is still donation supported and there is still a limit on downloads, but all areas are all open access.

Merlin's Portal is hosted in Germany and is one of the oldest NZB sites in existence. :)

Just a plug from me as it is one of my favourite sites.

If you have problems registering let me know and I will PM Merlin for you.

There's a specific iso file that I've been trying to download with local bandwidth for a while.

Why? What have I done wrong? :s

OK, the first thing you need to do is change that address to news.saix.net
Leave it on Port 119 by default.
Don't put any username or password in.
You are using the SAIX (Telkom) backbone are you not?
Then, have you found a NZB (tracker) file for the ISO you are looking for?
When you have the NZB file you load it into Grabit and start the downloading.

It seems these clowns (nzbsa and newshost) think that if they stop people from using their site, they can stop people from downloading from the news servers and have more bandwidth for themselves.

What a dumb attitude. If you recall newshost had a little legal issue in the last year, so rather control the user count for safety. And when you consider that darn news servers like IS suck on uncached stuff I don't think anyone would want that kind of "super fast" action.

Also, it is a free thing. With most free things it can only handle so many users.

Garyvdh
13-10-2009, 10:18 AM
The main reason that SAIX and IS News Servers suck so bad... is that some guys found a way to hack the system to create multiple connections. So they are leeching up to 32 connections at a time and making it a pain for anyone else to get a single connection.

What can you do? Get an international News Account.

TheRift
13-10-2009, 10:25 AM
5 connections to IS per user account purchased. Purchase more than 1 account and you should be entitled to more. It's not exactly what one would call a "hack" as compared to an entitlement from a a product purchase.

International news account is the best though. :) You get what you pay for.

How do you know that all the guys who are making up to 32 connections have actually purchased the accompanying number of accounts? Is someone monitoring them to make sure they don't abuse it? What about SAIX? How many connections are they allowed on SAIX?

They use IPCop and Virtual servers to create spoofed IPs and thus create multiple logins. I am NOT going to tell you exactly how to do it. There was a guy last year who posted the instructions here. Caused a lot of friction.

My isp has blocked every port. I can only FTP and email as usual. But they say when I use grabit then it slows their network down.
Currently they have blocked all peer2peer activity and I cannot use Grabit and I have had to suspend my account with Giganews until they are able to accomodate me.

I am thinking of switching to Telkom and Cybersmart next month should my current ISP not help me.

Is there anyone that can give some advice to my isp. They say that when I use grabit, it crashes their network.

Crashing the network of your ISP?

Use SSL connection to your news server. They cannot block port 443.

Its called BlueChip Online. I have had great success with them the past 4 years. I used to be able to use Utorrent or Limewire but now all that is blocked. I have been using Grabit since March this year and now all of a sudden that is blocked. I only do about 3g of download a month.

I am thinking of going for a 4mb ADSL line from Telkom/Cybersmart, but need all your advice i can get!

Do you think 4mb will do the same job for me as my current line speed which is throttled to 1024mb.

My isp has a 4mb telkom line but all users are graded and I only get a line speed of between 512k and 1024mb. I get my internet wirelessly from them.

Never heard of them. They're ripping you, that's for sure. Tell them to bugger off and then move to a real ISP like WebAfrica.

Sounds like they have a plum or politician on the tech support line if they told you that story.

If your single-line grabit is killing their network then you must be their only customer and they're using dial-up fax-speed for their main connection. :P

I have until month-end to switch to Cybersmart/Telkom.

My current internet is: Wireless 1024mb line and uncapped but I cannot use P2P :(

I think a 512k line may also suffice for me, but would my download speeds be?

When I use Grabit, I make use of giganews and astraweb for downloading from a news server.

I am thinking of going for a 512k line as because I think a 4mb line will just be a bit expensive.

What I must note is that I am wanting to share my internet connection with another point a few metres away in another building. My new ISP has assured me they can make my 2nd place a hotspot so I can have my siblings also share the internet from another pc.

I'm no expert and base my answer on what I've read on here...

The obvious answer is that to start using your Telkom local you have to use your 1GB international first. But some guys on here have stated that if you're on local on the last day of the month, and you don't reser your router, that on the 1st of the new month you could still be using local bandwidth, until your router is reset.... perhaps someone else will venture a better answer.
Welcome btw, 1st post :)

Cap your account at the end of a month. Just before midnight create a connection (this will be a local connection). Then as soon as midnight passes start your downloads. All usage on this local connection will count to the current month's local usage, even though it's using a previous month's local connection. Fiekus is spot on - I did this at the end of September beginning of October and worked :)

I suggest you switch to adsl and set up your own network for your siblings. If you really don't want to, use the news server provided by your isp's reseller (probably SAIX or IS). If they complain about that, you could probably talk directly to the reseller and have them (the reseller) inform your current ISP that they (the ISP) are full of s**t then go back to your premium service. You could try using an encrypted connection to the news server. Also, I find it worrying that your ISP knows what program you're using- any one else agree or am I being paranoid?

EDIT: Could you please explain how they know you use Grabit. Did you tell them or did they already know?

Ok, you need to speak to someone moderately intelligent in the call center because it sounds like you've been dealing with a clown. Ask them how it crashes their network because that sounds a little far-fetched. Perhaps you should contact their reseller and read through their t&c's and aup to arm yourself beforehand.

Hi guys,

Does anyone know of any good free international NZB sites? I know of nzbmatrix.com, but it only allows downloads of new nzbs (up to 25days) on free registration. :(

Any suggestions / recommendations?
Thanks :)

Well you have two options;

1. If it's really not a valid .rar file then either download the file again or find another .nzb

2. Sometimes the extension gets confused, so simply rename the file with the .rar extension and it should work (assuming you have winrar or similar)

Hope this helps.

Did the file have .par files? If it did DL QuickPar-0.9.1.0 and try a repair, there is sometimes some blocks missing and you cannot extract it.

ja, maybe one of the guys can help you with which setting exactly it is in Avast, or you might have to use a different AV program.

is what you are downloading cached or uncached. The speed sounds about right for uncached material.

I don't use the local servers so I can't really say. One of the other guys will be able to advise us.

The spikes of 300 kb/s are not a true reflection of you speed. The news server always spikes when you connect, but because you are constantly connecting and disconnecting it is not good for your system or the server.

You can usually tell by the speed. If you belong to a local NZB site, you can see how many other users who use your server have downloaded a particular NZB but that doesn't necessarily mean it's cached.

Sirus it looks like the AV causes connects and disconnects which is what causes the spiked downloads but 20KB/s is too slow for 4 meg line i would think.

I started my download on the WA server, switched over to IS, back to WA. Eventually it finished on SAIX (what can I say, I get around;):p). Could this have anything to do with the corruption? I would think not considering the NNTP and how all the servers mirror one another but just wanted to double check.

Another file just finished and could not be extracted either. Also multiple servers.

If you have QuickPar already then what you need to grab for each download is the small .par2 file and once you have finished the download you need to open this file in QuickPar. QuickPar will then do it's thing and should tell you exactly how many blocks you need.

If you get an NZB that does not have a small .par2 file then you can grab the (larger) file that ends with "00+01.PAR2" or sometimes "00+1.PAR2 and open this in QuickPar. This file can do the same job as the small .par2 file and also then has 1 block of recovery data.

When I say small I'm talking between 15- and 40 KB per 700 MB of download.

From my personal experience, if I have to rank the three servers the worst is IS in terms of number of corrupt files. Second is WA and last is SAIX, I cannot actually remember ever getting corrupt files on SAIX whereas on IS I often need at least 1 PAR file. WA is not nearly as bad, for a download that required close on 2000 blocks only 1 was corrupt/missing.

So I would imagine that it was IS that let the team down there ;)

Why not select all the ones that errored and retry all of them? Ie not one by one. And move the current selection to the top so they others do get retried.

I use Grabit. After importing an NZB, I remove all the PAR2 files from the queue then I set it to auto retry errors and I leave it to download. After a while all the files should come through. Keep the NZB in case you need PAR2 files later.

Can you guys give me your opinion on Easynews?
There you can search for what you want, zip them, and download it in 1 convenient zipped file. I have been with them for 7 years, but recently their daily updates seems to be lacking.
Is there any other Usenet service that can give me the same method of usenet experience?
The main reason why I like them, is that I can access them from any computer without downloading and installing 2 or 3 programs.

Seriously, 3G and News Servers are NOT a good idea! Unless your name is Donald Trump. Gonna be massively expensive.

But if you insist, get yourself an Astraweb account. They are a full international news server and will work with 3G.
Also, when I use this program that I had to download, will it use my local cap from telkom with telkom adsl line and as an ISP? On hat server must I connect if telkom is the isp?
EDIT: Ok here goes, hope someone can help me. I have a telkom adsl line, they are the isp also. I do not have any international cap left. I am trying to connect with server:news.saix.xxx, will this work or what should I do? Hope someone can help me please

Yes, if Telkom is your ISP then you must use the news.saix.net address.

If you have already used up your international cap then it will start using your local only.

Leave it running a few minutes until it makes a connection.

It looks like iot made a connection now, but still not downloading, will give it a few minutes. Thank you very much for the help, I really appreciate it.
EDIT: I just checked it again, in the bottom tab it keeps jumping from downloading to connecting. There where it says #, under that are a number 1 and under that number 2 and both of them keep on hopping between downloading and connecting. Is this normal?
