Ok, so here's a challange. I need to get information from an IP and Proxy Server address. Why?

Some guy, I have a guess as to who it is, placed an advert in a paper using my number as a sick joke. The paper handed over the IP details after I handed over a signed affidavit. Now I need to hunt this person down with proof.

So, how do I get as much info as possible from an IP address? If I can't do it then anyone interested in helping can private me for the address.

What was the first part of the IP address?

If it is from an ADSL or dial-up/ISDN line, where the IP addresses change at most reconnects, wouldn't this be very difficult?

1) PM me the ip and ill see what i can do
2) Once we got the isp, you can take it up with them

PS: only thing is, if the guy went through a proxy, we might be stuffed :(

Look dude, this kind of thing happens all the time and I have been a victim of it. Theres nothing much you can do about it except get over it.

Its going to take a lot of effort for you to get people to hand over information. The fact that the newspaper did give you the info could even be illegal.

Since he didn't threaten you or do anything illegal, there is not much you can do, because ISPs aren't allowed to hand over info to anyone unless they get a court or police order. Only intelligence agencies should have that kind of power.

If you know someone somewhere at an ISP who could slip you the info then you surely wouldn't be posting here.

Bear in mind that you are going to waste a lot of time and energy on this, is it really worth it.

What about the time and energy wasted trying to explain to people you didn't place the advert and answering all those cellphone calls during business hours?

Happened to a friend of mine, but the culprit was the municipality. They still hasn't changed their numbers and he has been getting phone calls for rental of a property for the last 3 years. He's used stories like he's bankrupt to that the person died or whatever. Phoned the guys repeatedly to rectify their mistake, which they didn't.

Eventually I told him he should ask for a deposit and say that the property is definitely theirs (and give the municipality bank details) that way he committed no fraud and the people will be pissed off at the municipality for stealing their money :D

Too much effort though

I gave the paper the affidavit signed by the police, so everything is legal on my and the papers part. however, what this guy did is illegal and he is known to have a violent nature. I need all the info and proof incase i have to go to court.

And yes, if I knew someone I wouldn't be here.
