I need to get my son a fairly cheap car and I've searched the local weekend paper for a private deal on a Citi Golf but just can't find anything.
One that looked interesting had a number that went straight to voice mail, and haven't heard back from the messages left.

If anyone is selling a good used Citi Golf or knows where I can find one in the PE area please let me know.

What is your budget?

Does it have to be a citigolf? There are a lot of better cars out there for that money...

I Agree

Especially if we end up paying R15-R20 per litre for petrol by next year.

The Citigolf, is old, outdated, expensive to service, expensive parts and UNSAFE!

Get some japanese or korean small car. Something like a second hand Getz or Charade. At least they have crumple zones.

You will love getting 20km per litre.

Seems like he's looking for a second-hand car.

I'm talking 2nd hand. VW's are even more overpriced there. Low prestige brands like the Korea's are far better cars at the same price.

My own 2nd hand Hyundai I bought for R55k in 2001. A VW Jetta of same spec and KM, went for R75K.

I would look at a 2nd hand Charade. Small car, lots of space, good engine, excellent fuel economy.

Some how I'm thinking the OP is referring to a +-R20k Golf 1. :)

The Getz is a realy nice car. Still you cant beat the parts availabily and cheap maintanence for Golf Mk1's making it the perfect student car. But ja the high attraction to hijackings, theft and lack of active safety features does put one off.

You are spot on there - I should have posted my budget in the OP 20~25K.

I was thinking that the Golf 1 (Citi) would be cheap to buy and service - I had an experience with a Daewoo where the parts needed to be ordered and very pricey and for this reason was avoiding the imports.
The Opel Corsa would also fit the bill and not have parts import problems.

I'll see what's available in today's Herald.

The Kinsley Report has the City as the cheapest car to maintain in its class.

Im not supporting Golfs 1s, just the TRUTH!

Hi there, I'm new & came across this thread while seraching for the new Citi Golf on Google. I have to say Golfs are great cars! Cheap to maintain & service.I have my old MK1 for 2 years & I am currently selling it for R13,000.I am buying the 2008 Citi Storm. It is really low on fuel consumption. It is the perfect student car. I have a Imobilizer & Gear Lock fitted on my car.As for saying that its a high risk vehicle.... :) Which vehicle isnt high risk in SA these days? These bloody thieves will steal anything, even a wheelbarrow if left unattended, you poor dog isnt even safe. You would not go wrong with a Citi Golf, you just have to take the necessary precautions to park your car in a safe place like all other vehicles.

you would actually willingly go and spend R70k+ on a new ****tigolf?... Are you mad?... spend that money on a decent 2nd hand car, it will be safer, more fuel efficient and cost less to insure.

Some insurance companies won't insure those cars anymore because they're classified as high risk in SA, that says something. You can do lots better than a golf for the same kind of money.. just search Autotrader and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thanx for scaring me guys ! I did look at used cars first but the mileage on some of them is ridiculous!!!! My current Golf is a 1994 model & its mileage is 166,260km & its a 13 yr old car! Ive checked out the Hyundais etc 2004 till 2007 cars they have a higher mileage than my Golf so it was buy a used car with a high mileage & pay 70,000 wit all the charges involved Or buy a brand new car & pay that amount. So I chose the latter.

2004 hyundai with more than 150000kms on the clock for around R70k?.. that doesn't even seem vaguely right....

Just searching on Autotrader I am getting tonnes of results for cars between R60k and R90k 2004-2007, and not one of them has +150000kms on the clock.

Just seen a 2005 Clio, with all the trimmings for R72000 and only 48000kms on the clock, thats a pretty decent bet right there... INFINITELY better than a ****tigolf.

Hi Toxic Bunny, thank you for your advice.I am not buying that stupid Golf!! I am still looking for a car & taking my time till I find one.Thing is I am looking for a Sedan & these dealerships only have hatchbacks.I am sick & tired of hatchbacks.

ToxicBunny

Not buying that golf is a very good move.

Just be patient, you will find a car worth buying, shop around... don't be afraid to tell a dealer where to get off if you think he's trying to rip you off, also don't be afraid to offer them R10k less than their asking price if they've got it on the floor.

The BIG 60,000km service is coming up for that one, though. That will set you back about R6000 iirc.

That chevy aveo is a decent enough car.. nothing absolutely special, but its better than a golf and it'll get you around nicely.

TiredOfWaiting : Ahhh, yes, I'd forgotten about the Renaults big service costs.... They're still a better car than a ****tigolf tho.

Really that much to service a Renault  Thats a joke.Yeh wasnt looking for anything special.Married 2 years now & plan on having kids soon so need that Sedan kinda car.Cant wait to get rid of my current Golf.I ran our JRT puppy over on Sat nite.We have 5 dogs,Ridgeback,3 JRT's & a Tibetan Terrier. The 1 JRT ran under the car when I was coming up the driveway. So goodbye badluck Golf! It was devastating :(

Shame man :(... thats not nice... best get rid of the golf then.

Its only specific services on the Renault that are very expensive, most are pretty average priced really. If you're planning on having kids, a sedan isn't necessarily the best option if you ask me...

I'm thinking about getting married sometime soon, and then kids will follow after that, so I'm looking at replacing my current car (golf4) with something like an Audi Avant...

How about an Opel Astra? Very low fuel, reliable, not too expensive to maintain. Saw one with 100kms for 35k...

It's just the 60,000 km service. They have to replace some timing belt, which requires them to take out the entire engine to get to it.

Normal services are about R1,000 - R1,500.
