It's a pretty large download, to get your local installation updated to the full server version. I'd guess somewhere between 1-2Gb. However, if you get hold of someone with a recent update, they can send their DAT file to you. Depending on how many chapters (or expansions, if you like) they have, it can be up to 5Gb. So it would be worthwhile to plug a HDD in rather.

Note that you can also just install the game and let it run its initial download, which is approx 500Mb. Thereafter it can trickle the rest in the background whilst you're playing. However, on anything less than a 512Kb connection, this can occasionally cause lag whilst you're playing. I recommend installing the game, registering your account and then either running a dedicated update (meaning the 1Gb+ download) overnight, or grabbing a DAT file from a friend.

NOTE: when I first got ADSL and my PC's IP address changed, I had some issues getting the update to work. Hopefully this isn't a problem anymore.

For roughly every map in GW, with every chapter + expansion, you're looking at +-6Gb's, i personally copied my friend's gw.dat file across

Is that without GW:EN maps?

And what does "-image" do?

Solid, its not that big if you think about it... each map ingame is rather large (struggling on my exploration title). It will most likely be a 300-500mb orginal update, then each new map you go into, you're looking at 1-7mb's. The reason i'm saying this is because you can't host gw updates, they come directing from ArenaNet, as the Anet team constantly modify the gw build

I was going to buy the bundle...but if its 300-500mb for each titles initial update then, Well now im only going to buy the GuildWars Nightfall(Cheapest Title) to see how it plays and how bad the updates are going to eat my bandwidth (2gig cap is a thumbs down)...

It's not big at all!!!!!!!! First time I installed it, it downloaded about 50mb's and was ready to play. Now every now and then it downloads a couple of megabytes..... It's one of the least bandwidth-hungry MMO's out there!

Ditto. Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall and GWEN, imaged.

Also, if you download as you go, lag doesn't happen while you're doing stuff, it happens as you enter each new area.

Guys it all depends on which games you have. The order of release of the games are as follows:

1) Prophecies
2) Factions
3) Nightfall
4) Eye of the North

If you only buy Prophecies, you're going to have to do some updating. Nothing huge...probably around 200MB or maybe slightly more, as many updates have been released since the initial game. However, the newest box versions of Prophecies should have most of these updates included.

Buying Factions means you will have less updating to do, but still quite a bit. The same goes for Nightfall, less than with Prophecies and Factions, but a significant amount.

Buying Eye of the North along with one of the other campaigns will mean you will have to downloaded probably very little as Guild Wars updates are small.

So basically what I'm saying it that each campaign/expansion contains all updates applied prior to it's release.

I wonder why my gw.dat file is 5.8gb then

There is a command that you can use to DL everything, but... would only use it if you have a large cap and fast enough connection :)

I am not too sure on this:
A while back I had Faction & prophecies installed and played those for about 2 months then got NF as soon as I had used the key and loged in it downloaded about 40 files and I did not have any further downloads ingame, cept for final mission... perhaps it had download'ed all the files while I was still playing Prophecies & factions :D
