It seems like the main competing technology will be Wireless internet. Anyone making any use of Wireless Internet providers yet? I see Wisp (http://www.wisp.co.za) is pretty active.

What is the latency like on wireless connections?
Does weather play a big role in your connection quality?
Does throughput remain more constant?

The contention ratio's seem far more transparent. Would be interesting to get some information on this.

One more interesting technology is internet over power lines. I've heard some murmurs about this. Anyone know anything about this?

I must say... I quite like the R12K Installation fee for a Ethernet based Wireless Router...

Don't worry, we wont constantly rip you off like telkom, we'll only do it once... LOL.

we are testing a software product in Sa that turbo charges web browsing and e-mail protocols by using a combination of caching and compression technoologies. for further information check out www.arteraturbo.com

to test the SA version go to http://download.Artera.com/SA and download the zip file to your hard drive. Then extract the files and run the install shield wizard which will walk you through the configuration of the client. I would suggest downloading the file from a high speed connection if available and burning it to CD to try at home on a dial up or broadband connection.

There is a speed test utility built into the client which will test your connection speed with and without Artera Turbo running. I would recommend that you visit www.toast.net/performance which has a similar speed test but is independent of the Artera network for a comparison. Both these tests measure the throughput of HTTP traffic by comparing the time taken to download a mixture of data from images to text and highly compressible text to the size of the file.

Let me know if you decide to try it and the results of your testing. We are particulary interested in how it affects your connection once you have reached your cap. The more data we have from people testing it out the better.

thanks

I am already currently a trial user of Artera. What I am interested in, in this topic is more along the line of hardware alternatives to ADSL... [:D]

I must say wisp is expensive compare to other such providers, especially from the installation point of view !

Cheers !

Okay I know that wireless is expensive but I need options currently the main problen I have is I can't get ADSL since telkom seem to take their time(March 2005) and I have 3 isdn connections on my property so you can imagine the strain on my wallet. I want to know if I can get wireless? Not Satelitte since it seems impossible to play ANYTHING with 700 ping being the norm so I'm looking into radio or other alternatives actually anything.. This has been bothering me for a while I'm hoping someone can help[:(!]

What is wisp?
After several minutes of trying to load it didn't load and the second time came up with a page not found error.
