Haven't seen other sources of this yet but:

Eskom says it wants parts of its tariff hike application kept confidential.

It says if this doesn't happen, South Africans could find themselves paying even more for power.

The utility handed in its application for a 53% increase to the country's National Energy Regulator three weeks ago.

Nersa is yet to make a decision on whether the hike will be implemented.

Eskom's Andrew Etzinger says the power giant's bargaining position would be weakened if certain details in its application were to be made public.

So eskom are out to make themselves look like an even bigger joke than they already are (who thought that was possible?).

I love this part:

Eskom's Andrew Etzinger says the power giant's bargaining position would be weakened if certain details in its application were to be made public

Yes I imagine it would. If the public knew exactly how much you were screwing them over I doubt they would react kindly to it.

And this gem as well:

It says if this doesn't happen, South Africans could find themselves paying even more for power

"Give us what we want or else". These guys are in the wrong line of business.

I think its time as South Africans that we send a clear message to these idiots. Everyone who owns a shop or business should have a list of eskom execs and refuse to serve them or their families.

Didn't Carte Blanche reveal last night that it's because they've ordered coal at market prices, and we're being made to foot the bill?

I'm not sure, I didn't see it.

Probably 50% of the increase requested is for allocation to bonuses

Nersa agrees to withhold Eskom's 'sensitive info' (http://www.sabcnews.com/south_africa/general/0,2172,167222,00.html)

Nersa agrees to withhold Eskom's 'sensitive info'

Eskom, which was granted a 14.2% increase at the end of last year, is now seeking a 53% hike

April 07, 2008, 15:15

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has agreed not to disclose any commercially sensitive information on Eskom when it publishes the power utility's application for a 53% electricity tariff increase tomorrow.

Nersa electricity committee member, Thembani Bhukula, says the information relating to amounts of money allocated to purchase power generating material will not be divulged to the public.

Bhukula says this may curtail Eskom's ability to negotiate with its suppliers. Eskom had asked Nersa to withhold sections of its tariff increase application from the public on the grounds that the information is "business sensitive", Nersa said.

On March 18, Eskom handed in its application to the regulator's electricity sub-committee and the information was to have been posted on Nersa's website to facilitate public comment.

Eskom, which was granted a 14.2% increase at the end of last year, is now seeking a 53% hike amid a national electricity crisis.

The deadline for written comment on the proposal is April 29. The closing date for registering to attend or present material at subsequent public hearings would be May 19, and the hearing itself is planned for May 23.

Pathetic but not unexpected.

Eskom shouldn't be allowed to keep a single thing private from the public, let alone details of why we must be further shafted so they can continue to pay millions in bonuses.
