I thought it was time for a desktop screenshot thread. Show off the sexyness of your Linux and let us know how you got it that way.

I'll start with my laptop:

http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=3506

Read the photo description to see what I'm running.

Yeah, very similar to torsmo, only not as much of a mission to get running correctly :D Especially on KDE.

On that laptop (in the screenshot) I am running Kubuntu 7.10 (Basically Ubuntu using KDE instead of Gnome).

The background is the same image used in the splash screen "FingerPrint" (created by Christian Leh (http://moodwrod.com))

The "seamlessly integrated" terminal window on the top left where you can see all those eth0 link errors is Eterm set for transparency with the menu and title bars hidden.

The notepad on the bottom left is Knotes, a default app that comes loaded with KDE. Obviously I changed the colours to better suit my theme.

The weather widget is actually an Opera widget. Pretty cool.

The stats display on the right is a superkaramba widget called "tiny_mon -1.0". Unfortunately it isn't very configurable, but it does what I need. People who want to chop and change their stats displays usually go with torsmo, but I haven't found it to work very well under KDE.

Instead of using the default application panel on the KDE taskbar at the bottom, I have opted to go with the External Taskbar applet, which I have docked right above it, ensuring the KDE bar doesn't get too cluttered. Everything is obviously set for transparency.

All this stuff is pretty easy to configure. I find the hardest aspect of making a desktop pretty is coming up with an overall "theme". I have never been able to reproduce a similar level of prettiness on my desktop machine (obviously not using the same theme), simply because I haven't been able to come up with another design that I like and that looks good.

I find that the cube aspect (through compiz fusion) can be exceptionally useful, and though it starts out as a novelty more than anything else, it quickly becomes an asset to one's productivity. I find it works particularly well for designers (graphics, web design, coders, programmers, etc), especially the desktop wall, which allows one to zoom out and view all open desktops and the applications running therein, thus letting them see the "big picture" of everything they are working on, rather than being confined to one desktop only able to deal with a single application at a time. Obviously it isn't as useful to people with multiple monitors, however it does help to extend one's desktop in the sense that it feels like one's desktop isn't constricted to a single static window.

And it is really pretty.

The cube is achieved by installing an application called Compiz-Fusion which uses OpenGL rendering to make your desktop just that much more awesome. You can basically get the cube and awesome desktop effects on any distro of Linux provided it has a decent window manager (KDE - dare I say Gnome is decent? :D) and graphics card. You just need to install and configure.

I will write a tutorial on how to get the cube in KDE some time when I'm not too busy.

hehe lib i know it seems i brag alot about vista but i actually more defend it when the many threads about why it sucks are created

im not here to brag or fight about vista/linux as i dont really care what OS ppl use, i just get upset when something i love is constantly put down much the same as you okes would defend linux if i started alot of threads on why its not better than windows :)

im here to finally try out and see linux for myself and decide if linux is actually better than windows or if its a decent windows replacement

i sell computers on the side and i figured it might be nice to give my clients who use their pc for basic stuff another viable cheaper option :)

also since linux has become alot more user friendly im sure it will start to attract more and more users

linux uses multiple desktops - the cube is a way of switching between the desktops. You could think of it like alt-tab on steriods except you're switching desktops, not apps. Whether you use a cube or not, desktop-switching is very useful, once you're used to it.

It really would be great for you to try out linux, ask around in here if your need any help/advice. :)

I'm a noob linux user but I can already say that if you don't put aside just 30 minutes to install and learn compiz-fusion then you are just silly.

It's way more productive, easy on the eye and makes the overall PC experience so much better IMO.

I have a dual-boot system, but I rarely boot into Windows these days. I used my first distro way back in 1996, so I'm very happy that Linux has matured into an OS that can be used for everyday things.

As soon as I get my laptop, I'm going to set up a Gentoo system on it. My university has a mirror! :)

AFAIK the hand is a static image. If I'm not mistaken it was included with Kubuntu as either a login screen or wallpaper.

Your question is a bit cryptic, but I assume you are referring to the taskbar or dock that normally sits at the bottom of the screen.

There are a few options out there, but my favourite is Cairo dock - there are a good few themes you can download from within the software (the mac theme is there too).

The actual cairo dock setting app is a bit messy though, but once it's set up you wont' have to go back to change things very often. In Ubuntu you can install this from Add/Remove Applications (pre-Karmic) or the Software Centre (Karmic) - do a search for Dock or GLX dock. I'm sourcing it from the PPA - more info here:

http://developer.berlios.de/projects/cairo-dock/

Here's a screenshot of my dock at the moment: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/album.php?albumid=603&pictureid=4291

I am using avant window navigator. You can install this also via software centre in Ubuntu. You can have a look @ my profile. I have a screenshot posted there where you can see what it looks like. It is easy to use. Just drag and drop items from your menus in the top bar into the dock to create launchers. You can also download many new themes for it. Just do a search for awn themes and it will come up. Enjoy

Why do so many of your desktops have the ram and cpu meters etc? Does Ubuntu cause things to overcook or something that it needs to be watched all the time?

No, we're just freaks:) I like to have my temps monitored to make sure my system is running cool enough when overclocked. I like to have my network interfaces monitored so I can see the transfer rates and make sure that my international/local split is working on both connections. The rest of the stuff is monitored just because I can!

It's Awn (Avant Window Navigator), was using Cairo dock before but then ocleroux reminded me about avant (used it previously and wasn't happy, some nice fixes since the last time i used it though). I'm using the MacUltimate Leopard icon theme.

Awn isn't as customizable as Cairo dock, but the Cairo dock settings interface was really beginning to annoy me just because its so damn ugly. Awn is also a bit less responsive and loading takes longer (but not anything major). Make sure you also install awn-applets-c-extra and python-awn-extras for more applets.

Also does anybody know how to disable the regular gnome panel? I'm just auto hiding it know, but would like to get rid of it completely without causing any other problems.

HAHA!

Mind if I ask how you get your terminal background see-through Tinuva?

With gnome-terminal very easy, click on: Edit -> Profiles -> Background tab -> Tick "Transparent background" instead of a color or image.

However note, if you do that without compiz, you will only see the wallpaper. If you have compiz enabled like I do (need it for that see through title bar theme) then it will actually show applications behind the terminal as well. I love this because of a lot of the times I have msg/jabber open and can see when people reply while I am busy on a terminal and whether its worth tabbing back or not.

An Apple Mac theme? :wtf:

Ja I know...but I kinda like it. It is very cool window effects when you maxi/minimise with sounds etc etc. Besides, all the other themes in gnome-look is too freaking difficult to install. This theme you just copied a line into terminal and it did its thing.

Am I now going to be unloved cause I have a apple theme? *cries*

I'm using a theme that I always seem to go back to, just because it's so clean! The theme is called New-Dejavu, you can find it here: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Dejavu?content=129623

It's default font theme is Faenza, which I am using, and you really must use Nautilus Elementary to get the most out of it. Then just Docky for the bottom dock.

Music player is Audacious, which uses Winamp classic skins - I just found this one which worked nicely with the theme. Also, Audacious is really light on CPU so I can play music while I have loads of other stuff going on and it never skips a beat.

I don't really customise my desktop.

I change the background to whichever standard one it ships with that I like the best and that is the extent of my customisation. I remember when I first started using Ubuntu I used to customise the stuffing out of it. My poor graphics card was rendering flame text in editors, using that goddamn cube etc.

Oh wait I also put a terminal icon on the upper panel and I customise the terminal window keyboard shortcuts so that I can move through the tabs faster using shift + left/right. :p

Make sure you installed the extra widgets from the repos, I don't think they are installed by default. Next add the Desktop, Folder View or Icon (can't remember which one) widget to your Desktop. You should now be able to place icons inside this widget.
Or try http://www.ghacks.net/2010/09/05/add-desktop-icons-to-kde-and-gnome/

Suppose things are more stable but you end up with older packages.

It's not so nice. How can you let it run all over the girl? How about moving it a bit more to the right?

To tell you the truth, I never use conky scripts, only for screenshots to forums :) They distract me.
Same goes for the paper of K.S. For daily work blandness rules.:p

Going to build myself a (K)ubuntu Frankenstein: Ubuntu Server 10.10 + xorg + kdebase. I'm going to go from there and add what I want. NO LibreOffice! NO Evolution! Only what I want :) Too set in my debian ways for now to attempt an Arch install, so Ubuntu will have to do.

I'm looking at Debian proper. Have a Squeeze Virtualbox running which looks promising. No Plymouth rubbish and Gnome3 looks by and large like Gnome2 (but I may yet dump Gnome). Bit of effort to get sudo working, but at least you can use su.

My old celeron lappy is busy getting the Arch+Openbox treatment.

What apps do you have installed?

MyWorld

In general, SLiM, tint2 with a (better) battery monitor, wicd.

For apps I just Googled for lightweight apps alternatives. Chromium, Abiword, SMplayer, thunar/ PCManFM, etc.

I basically went through this list and picked the best ones I liked:

lol, already have most of that stuff installed but I still need to configure/tweak everything to my liking.

What battery monitor you using as I have not picked one yet?

MyWorld

Openbox comes with one that you can enable in the configs, but I could only get it to show the battery status once on DC power, as soon as you plug in the cable it will show a red bar for charging and once charged the battery monitor will stop monitoring the battery.

Most people like this, but I like to see the monitor in the systray at all times.

The one I used:
aur/batterymon

I see it is flagged out of date, maybe try the git version then.

Install gnome-tweak-tool - you will find quite a bit on it if you google it. Also new themes popping up everyday at gnome-look.org.

Okie, if you haven't yet installed the tweak tool, install it first:

su
yum install gnome-tweak-tool
exit

or you can just use Add/Remove software and install gnome-tweak-tool (I just don't like Fedora's Add/Remove tool very much).

The theme I am using is Zukitwo, you can download it here: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Zukitwo?content=140562

Extract the theme in to ~/.themes/

Open the gnome tweak tool (quick way: Press WindowsKey ==> type tweak ==> hit Enter).

Select Interface from the left menu and change GTK+ theme to Zukitwo.
Select Shell from the left menu and change the shell theme to Zukitwo.
Select Windows from the left menu and change theme to Zukitwo.

Hit F2 and type r and then enter.

And voila!

I am also using Faenza icon theme (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza?content=128143)

Droid Sans 9pt for fonts (http://damieng.com/blog/2007/11/14/droid-font-family-courtesy-of-google-ascender)

Using separate package to improve font smoothing, see my other post: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/361188-Subpixel-Hinting-patch-for-TrueType-fonts-in-Fedora

Oh dear. I am blond. I realized I need to take the folders thats in the Zukitwo folder and put them in the themes folder. Now it shows...but when I want to change the shell theme it sais user theme extension not engaged? Will google it and see if I can fix this.
