* I dunno why I'm in a hurry, I can only upgrade August anyway ;) I wish Vodacom could load my remaining 6 months onto a new 24 month contract (30 months) and give me a handset now :/

I have an upgrade on a Procall 600 end of June. I hope it's out by then, and free (seeing as MTN are usually cheaper than Vodacom on upgrade prices)

I think you can do something called a premature upgrade, but you pay much more, theres a calculation not sure how it works.

Good news. I see MTN are advertising it for FREE on a Procall 120 for R299 total cost! Seems like an excellent deal.

I've posted this question elsewhere, but I'll try again here :

Do the networks work on the end price of a contract, or the contract itself? What I mean by this is that they give a R3000,00 phone on Talk 130 and a R4000. phone on Talk 200, as it's the more expensive contract. However, if I took the Talk 130 and added a data bundle/SMS bundle to bring it to the same monthly price as a Talk 200 - will I get a R4,000.00 phone?

I'm looking at 2 contracts(Talk 130 and Talk 200). The cost is R315.00 and R430.00 respectivly. However, a Talk 130 + 200 SMS bundle + 20MB data works out at about R390.00 and suits my needs better. Will they give me a phone based on the contract? :/

Whats the point of a 20Mb data bundle? You saving R5.00 I think...

The I780 looks like an excellent phone. I need a qwerty keyboard, built-in GPS, wifi and document editing capabilities. I don't want to pay-in extra for a phone on my contract and this seems like the best deal. Compared to the Tytn II it works out to R2880 cheaper on contract over the 24 month period. I also like the fact that the keyboard is always "available" and can be used to dial numbers, search for contacts and sending sms's using 1 hand.

The camera is not as good as the Tytn II, but I hardly use my phone's camera anyway.

The only problem I read about is the possibility of third party software been incompatible because of the odd screen resolution (320x320).

Has anyone actually used the phone?

Agreed, but at least I know when I get my mail/surf, it's 'free' during the month. I know I've paid upfront, but my mind tells me it's free during the course and I don't need to worry about cost ;) PS It's R12 ...hehe

So, do I get it or not?

I used a Samsung I600 for a little while this year and really liked it. The design, keyboard etc was perfect and I was hoping they'd come out with something similar with WM6 pro and touchscreen. So here it is.... but why the heck did they choose this resolution.

I already read on some forums that quiet a bit of 3rd party programs aren't working on the phone because of the resolution. I don't really use a lot of programs, but I like to try them out just for fun. I don't play games on my phone either. The main thing is to get a good GPS program (pref. Tomtom) working. I read somewhere that Tomtom and TCPMP works fine on the phone, and as long as these 2 programs work well, I'm alright.

So....I'll probably go for it!

Id recommend you go for the HTC S730.

Always available qwerty keyboard you can use with one hand, and the touch screen for those times you just need to touch.

Htc S730? Compared to the i780? thats like comparing a nokia 1100 to the N73... different leagues, one is a disposable phone while the other is (meant to be) a multimedia device, like the S730 is a smartphone and the i780 is a pocket pc, not to mention the tiny processor and miniscule memory in the S730 compared to the i780. Im not saying its a bad phone but it is hardly worth mentioning when looking for something in the league of the i780 - if you suggested the tytan 2 or htc sedna it would be more understandable, the materials used on the i780 seem quite impressive compared to the dodgy plastics used in the cheaper htc models :P

Hope you arent offended :o Just trying to bring some clarity to difference in devices :P

And that is exactly where the hammer meets the nail. Battery Life.

I have been using a i320 (i600 predecessor) for nearly 2 years now and it is an excellent phone, except for the battery life. At least they were open enough about it to give you an extra battery and nifty battery-charger in the box, but I have always had to charge the phone every day with moderate use. And Java kills the battery. Dead.

But as long as you're willing to charge each day, it's a great phone. What I want to know is how does the i780 compare, especially once you get the GPS running?

Mkay, i have the i780 sitting right next to me :)

What a dream, all the connectivity you could hope for - so far i have played with the 3g, hsdpa and wi-fi, great interfaces, the mouse does not suck... it took me about 10 min to get used to pushing a mouse around the screen after i set the speed up (even my mom was playing with it - no complaints). I have got the gps set up with garmin and google maps, both work great, havent scratched it yet... i dont think i will because all in all it is a very solid and well housed device. I am pushing to get the os upgraded without pimping it myself - wm6 is great but i am used to the htc home screen in wm6.1 from my wizard. The 320x320 screen is a bit odd, but i have got gmail, skype and tcmp player working perfectly. I copied across many videos, even the 50mb high quality vids played flawlessly with great sound. Music isnt mind blowing but its pretty damn good compared to other ppc devices. Unfortunately for everyone who is basing their buy on battery life... the battery sucks... on the upside i am positive there will be larger batteries for purchase eventually and you get an extra battery with external charging case... so one cant bitch to much. Bare in mind though, when the phone warns you that the battery is low, the battery is only at about 40% - so its a bit longer lasting than i expected... its just the phone that whines early. Other ppc's only start panicking at about 20%.

In the box i got.
- car charger
- extra battery
- external charger box (brilliant little thing)
- normal charger
- headphones (im not a headphone guy... but they work well)
- pc connection cable
- 1gb micro sd card with garmin maps package (i wish they would put that on the box so people dont buy bloody extra sd cards and then find out that they already have one!!)
- garmin maps coupon (gotta love coupons!)
- samsung cd
- the i780
- 2 year samsung warranty (shocking but true)

Two things to watch out for though, when you start the phone for the first time, dont get to excited, do a hard reset after running it for an hour or so (its a wm6 thing, if you dont you stand the risk of it hanging - it happened to me on the first day, i did a hard reset, now its running perfectly for the last few days).

If you want garmin maps on a bigger micro sd card... do not use the coupon until you have copied all the files from the included micro sd to the bigger one, put the bigger card in your phone and run samsung mobile navigator from there. Garmin registers to the micro sd card... not the phone. I am now sitting with a 2gb micro sd with no garmin and a 1 gb with garmin... i really couldnt be bothered switching cards everytime i want to use the garmin maps so my 2gb is in cold storage until i figure out how to port. Dont make the same mistake.

I actually just entered into this thread to post a review just like yours.

One point I will re-mention is the mouse. It really is a nice little feature, once you set the speed to max. I find I am using it more than the touch screen at the moment - because it's easy.

Raesteyn, how did you get the Garmin working?

I opened the program, clicked activate, entered the coupon, and waited. The sms came - but it didn't do anything. The Garmin program said it was still waiting for the sms to arrive. Very weird. Maybe I will try it again later.

The i780 so far seems to be the best form factor PPC I've had. The Tytn II was great, but the lack of one hand functionality got me. On the i780 - I can virtually do anything with one hand!

Anyone know where I can get a 4gb/8gb micro-sd for a resonable price?

Edit: An I am also glad I opened the box in the shop. I was about to buy a car charger, and was VERY impressed to see one in the box already!!!

Lol... nice.

It does take awhile to set itself up, even after the sms comes, try doing it again and leave your phone for a while, if there is a problem it will let you know. Mine took about 3-4minutes. I also find myself using the mouse more than the touch screen, it just seems more functional...

I to prefer the form factor over my wizard (imate k-jam - baby tytan.. lol) the keyboard is taking a bit of getting used to but other than that its perfect for one hand use.

I am not sure if you will be able to use an 8gb micro sd, i have only heard of guys going up to 4gb - it is a very kitted out device though so it will probably work.. just test before you buy. The prices are very generic at the moment, so check places like incredible corruption and makro, the prices are all the same... 2gb cards are +- R250 and 4gb's are about R390 i think.

I was also very impressed with the car charger, all the reviews from the US i have read complain about not having a car charger included, i guess we are just lucky :P

PS: Just a side note, i got mine on mtn pro-call 120, im not sure if the package is the same with vodacom etc.

Great. I will try the Garmin thing later.

What I am also looking for is the touch scrolling functionality. I notice it works in Opera, but I'm sure there is a CAB somewhere which enables the touch scroll (iPhone like) scrolling capablitly. Maybe WM6.1 brings that feature in August. I just remember my TyTN II which was running Windows Mobile 6.1 had it!

Google "pontui for the i780", its a brilliant app that came out last year, alot of work has gone into it and it is free. Check it out. I put it on my wizard when it first on new years (yes there was a countdown before the link became available) and it was great, unfortunately the wizard has a slow cpu so it got laggy and i removed it :P

For more info on the htc home plugin etc check out xda-developers... they have everything.

Check this out to, im gonna install now... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388579

The next step is to figure out where one can buy a pouch or case of some sort for the i780, there are some very nice leather flip pouches and general screen protectors available over seas but as far as i can tell there is nothing on the local market. Perhaps going shop to shop will help, google.co.za boasts some very fruitless results.

mmm.

In an interesting move, tonight I disabled the mouse and made the touch pad 4 way navigation, like a d-pad. It works surprisingly well - and I actually think I like it better than the mouse. I ran accross an application on Modaco.com that allows you to map a button (like the camera button) to be able to switch between mouse and 4-way navigation on the fly. Really handy to have 4 way navigation in the messaging app, really helpfull!

On a more interesting note, looking for the registry hack that allows me to change the left softkey from Phone to "Programs". Having it as phone is superfluous as the green button does the exact same function.

This phone is getting better and better by the day. Amazingly, the battery has lasted since 7am this morning, and still has quite a bit of power left. My TyTN II would be DEAD by this time of day.

Good stuff to report all around then :) I sent an email off to Garmin South Africa, not really expecting a real response... i was more expecting a generic email telling me about why Garmin is locked on one card only... to my surprise i recieved an email back saying that the software has been unlocked and i must re-register on my bigger card, now i have garmin on my 2gb. Also after reading up on xda i found out that you can use an 8gb card without installing any patches.

I installed the htc home screen and put all my apps in there, so i havent really thought about remapping, i am glad to know there arent any issues when messing with the registry though, that opens up many customization options.

After reading this i checked my battery, its sitting at 70%, funny thing is that the closest it came to charging was 10 min yesterday when i copied emails across... perhaps the batteries take a while to come into themselves? My spare battery is gonna have to get used to being lonely... lol

I installed the htc home screen and put all my apps in there

Does the HTC home screen work well with the screen resolution?

Did you have to install Realvga to get any apps to work with the square screen resolution?

Also, besides the standard WM6 apps, are there any special Samsung apps pre-installed? I know the I600 had some cool Samsung apps like a converter, very good alarm clock etc.

raesteyn
24-06-2008, 10:25 AM
It does, only little quirk is that the middle row of numbers are slightly cut off at the base, hardly a reason not to use it though. Ive seen worse bugs in the samsung today plugin.

I havent really gone to far with various apps, im waiting for a rom update before i go all out but from what i have read you will need the realvga to get quite a few apps displaying right. Problem being that even though the screen is 320x320 some apps (compliments of windows mobile - go microsoft - woohoo) still think the phone is 240x240 as wm6 was built to support treo and palms square screens which are 240x240. 320x320 is still a fairly new concept but i am expecting many fixes in wm6.1 which the sgh i780 is in line for. Worst case scenario... that i have seen, was that the app is pushed to the left or right of the screen. - please note though, the difference between a 320x320 and a 240x240 is not the actual size of the screen but the dpi. 320x320 = 128dpi (more space, smaller icons) 240x240 = 96dpi (less space, bigger icons, apps fit full screen - you just have to scroll down). Realvga lets you choose between the two. So take a normal pda, for example the tytan 2, with its 240x320 screen - 240 from side to side, 320 from top to bottom, apps are generally built to fit from side to side which means their width is set to 240, for apps to run correctly on the i780 they will need to have a width of 320 (top to bottom on the tytan 2). Therefor a decent test one can do when going from a tytan type phone to the samsung and wandering what apps will work, try opening the app and changing your screen orientation (slide out the keyboard or however else you want to do it) The view you see when the orientation has changed is likely what you will see on the samsung... just smaller. (not sure about the dpi's... i may have got thm the wrong way round... but im sure you all get the idea :P )

Yes, the mobile converter is there as are the alarm clocks. It also comes pre-installed with opera, mini player (very cool little widget which pops up on the today screen), a great java app which supports the latest and greatest in java utilities and a handy lil app for changing the color of text and your current theme. Other than that the apps are pretty generic to wm6, the beautiful thing about windows mobile is that you are never limited to what you get with the phone... but all the pre-installed apps are fairly decent. Especially with the media gallery and video player.. some minor image editing capability and a shiny camera utility.

They say it will only take about 2 hours so hopefully i can get it back today and let you guys know how it goes. They didn't give me any info on the update though, so i am gonna have to hold thumbs that its wm6.1, if not it will be either wm6 D or wm6 E builds (samsung has a knack for only fixing one thing per update :P ) we should be on C (at least mine is... i would imagine anyone else getting the phone now would also be)... more to come

UPDATE*
I went, i laughed, i left.

I went into Samsung, asked for the update,
lady says that all the techies are off sick,
i think... cool, i will come back tomorrow but lets just elaborate on whats gonna happen),
i ask what the update is (wm6 update or wm6.1),
she looks at me,
my phone perks up "lost satellite reception" in a funky american voice,
she peers at my i780 and replies... "i dont think its windows mobile hey"...
i left.

I am going to try again today... hopefully techie flu is over.

That said, I had - still have the i600 and going by that little phone, i would go for Samsung with Windows mobile anyday... The i780 should be great if compared to the i600. The only hassel with the i600 was the smartphone edition of WM (not a full pocket PC) but it served me very well.
Will be looking at the i900 next year in April when my other contract expires.
I also upgraded the i600 to WM6 and loaded the full Office Mobile for smartphone - works a treat.

I780 is by far the best PDA to get at the moment. I went and looked at it yesterday at MTN and i gotta say it is a sexy device and its very thin for all the features it packs, it comfortably fits in my pocket and is not bulky at all. I should be getting mine today or tommorrow hopefully.

I780 has everything the tytn II has and more, it has a bigger screen, it is more compact and has a faster CPU. The Tytn II retails for R8900 and the I780 is Currently priced R5,022 at MTN. With a CPU running at 624mhz NOTHING beats that !

Does anyone know what the latest ROM version for the i780 is? When I select 'Version' under System Settings on mine, it displays PDA/PHONE: i780JCHB1. Is this old or new? Where's best place to upgrade ROM? Samsung Vodaworld? I guess DIY ROM upgrade will void the warranty... Any idea when the WM6.1 ROM will be available?

I think the Vlive! stuff is the embedded network setting to connect to VC's access point, if you go into settings, it's merely the IP and proxy settings to connect you online - you can rename it to whatever you want. My i780 has no branding of Vodafone (i.e. VLive) on it like previous Moto Q9H (also an awesome handset) and there's also no ugly RED Vlive/Vodafone garbage installed on it, so I guess it's free from that curse...

I've had the i780 for the past week as seeing that its my first PPC, I'm pretty impressed.

Our local version here the i780JCHB1 is a couple of ROM's out of date as they have released the E1 ROM overseas.

A guy over in Malaysia cooked a ROM that included WM 6.1 but he seems to have taken that off the "market" at the moment. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409258

Called the Samsung office at Vodaworld and he said I can bring my phone there and they will upgrade the firmware.

I'll try it.

Sounds good hilton! Please let us know what the outcome is! The lady at Samsung I spoke with could not provide any info on ROM versions etc. so what version exactly is the newest over here in SA remains a mistery for now...

A guy over in Malaysia cooked a ROM that included WM 6.1 but he seems to have taken that off the "market" at the moment. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409258

That's a real shame. Here is the post I tried to put up last night, before something went a little wonky:

Hey

I'm a first time poster but I thought I'd post my experiences with the Samsung I780.

Mine is the same version. the thing that worried me was when I started syncing with the exchange server, it mumbled something about vlive! Eish, I certainly don't want that cr@p on my phone. Is this standard?

When the phone is run for the first time, it automatically detects the VLive! settings off the Vodacom sim card. Don't worry though. They have ruined the phone by rebranding everything like they did with the Motorola Q9H. ;) You can get the ordinary Internet and MMS settings from Vodacom's website or via *111#.

Installed Opera 9.5 after pre-loaded Opera 8.65 started freezing up, works beautifully!

This thing is Exchange's best friend 2008!

Mine also arrived with firmware version B1 (the last 2 letters of the ROM). I believe that the latest update available from Samsung is the E2, but you do have to take it into your nearest Samsung service centre to get it. It is possible however, to get the E1 firmware and load it on your phone yourself, though you must be running a computer with Windows XP (32-bit) to do this. As was mentioned though, loading a new firmware will probably void your warranty.

If you are feeling brave and are up to it, an enterprising individual by the name of EFN has managed to cook up a ... wait for it ... WM 6.1 for the I780 using the best of the E1 ROM and combining it with the advances in the latest HTC ROMs. You can find all the files you'll need as well as the necessary instructions at the following link: XDA Developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409258). I myself have braved the update process and after many hours of trying to get Mirage to detect my phone (and attempting to get my phone into stupid detect mode ... which is unnecessary) managed to successfully update to WM 6.1, and it's pretty awesome. :) You even get the choice of the commonly recognized HTC Home Screen, or the Samsung Home Screen which was included in later Samsung ROMS (C1 and later I think - see below for an attached image).

Except for a few minor glitches it's running perfectly. :D

If you are concerned about it though, there are rumours that apparently Samsung will release their official WM 6.1 upgrade sometime in August. :)

That's a real shame. Here is the post I tried to put up last night, before something went a little wonky:

So did you use that firmware that was taken off the market (so to speak) or is it back on again?

Is it worth attempting?

Maelstrom
24-07-2008, 06:04 PM
I'm currently using EFN's WM6.1 (v2.1) firmware, the one that has been "taken off the market". Yes, there's a glitch here and there, but nothing so glaring that it's impossible to live with. I'm rather pleased with the firmware. I've noticed increased performance, with all my programs remaining responsive and usable.

In my opinion, it's definitely worth it, at least until Samsung releases the official upgrade, at which point the real ROM cooking can commence. ;) If you are considering risking the procedure though, rather read through that particular thread on XDA Developers and see the problems that other users have experienced, and see if they will negatively affect your experience with your phone.

Thanx Maelstrom for the posts wrt the updates! Let me know how V3 runs... I'm VERY tempted...

Going to Vworld today to do their ROM upgrade, but doubt whether it will be anything later than C1.

Probably a stupid question, but if one should take the handset in to a service centre to do a firmware upgrade after doing a cooked version yourself, will they still do it? (and will the official one still install and work?)

Hey

Like I said. I'm really enjoying the ROM, even with a few niggles that it has, which is to be expected. Performance wise, I would say that it's definitely better than what I experienced with the B1 firmware that my phone arrived with. General OS performance and video performance is extremely good.

I don't see why they wouldn't do it, but just in case, you can also 'downgrade' to an official Samsung ROM (C1 or the like) yourself before taking it, and I doubt very much they would be any wiser. Fortunately, we recieved the generic versions of the ROMs on our phones, and not a Vodacom/Vodaphone branded one.

If the official upgrade does come out, it may or may not work with the cooked ROM. However, like I suggested earlier, 'downgrading' the phone back to an official Samsung WM 6.0 ROM would, I think, solve any problems with the official update once (and if) it arrives. :)

So how long did this take and what level of firmware did they load?

The Saga:

Went to Samsung VWorld: "No sir we only have 2 technicians over weekends and it will take too long, so we suggest you take it to Vodacare, they have more technicians than us and it will take less time..."

Went to Vodacare:
Me: "What version of the ROM will be installed?"
Consultant: "There's no new software for it, the phone is new..."
M: "But the SAMSUNG consultant said there's a newer version available...?
C: "I don't know about that..."
M: "So can your technician have a quick look and tell me?"
C: "You have to book in your handset, an assessment will only be done after 24 hours..."
M: "And then...?"
C: "Then we can phone you and quote for the repair...?
M: "What repair, nothing is broken, I simply need a software upgrade on the handset...?
C: "You cannot upgrade now, because this handset is still new..."
M: [I]Turn around and walk away...[I]

I will phone/mail our company's SAMSUNG consultant today, but after Maelstrom and The Thug's good feedback on the cooked WM6.1 version 3, I think I'll rather take my chances and DIY.

This general scenario of incompetence whenever some basic service is required is a problem that is costing companies dearly and it is getting worse!

What S/W do you use to backup SMS/MMS etc.? Does the bundled MIT software on the CD actually work on a restore to the new ROM? I'm not worried about my contacts, calender etc. as that will pull through from Exchange, just my SMS's/MMS's.

Then Garmin Mobile XT, is it as simple as re-installing it from the bundled SD card after the ROM flash? Does it pick up its registration/activation status online?

Yep. Once you insert the SD card into the phone, it'll automatically put the icon in the program menu so you can reinstall it, no need to reactivate it.

After dropping my Touch Diamond in the toilet (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb//showpost.php?p=1936190&postcount=90) on Sunday night I went out and got an i780 based on the comments here. Been a long-time WinCE/WM user.

i780JCHB1, CE 5.2.1944 Build 18547.0.7.3. Installed my SPB apps: MobileShell2, GPRS Monitor, Phone Suite, PocketPlus, SPBTime2, and then MS Reader, Pocket Stars, Pocket eSword, HandyMap, Google Maps, etc, etc. SPB Phone Suite doesn't support 320x320 so off it came. PocketPlus stopped drop-down menus from dropping down, so off it came. Other stuff seems to work fine, though haven't yet tested everything.

Raesteyn is right - the i780 needs to be hard-reset a few times to stabilise. Wonder why - it's not a WM thing but probably the quirkiness of the i780 implementation by Samsung. Another irritating lapse in Samsung quality control: you can't change the default live.vodafone.com Home page in Pocket IE, at least in the i780 I have (from VodaShop Sandton City).

The phone seems to pull cell signal better than my last three HTC devices (Kaiser, Diamond, Prophet), probably because of larger antenna. Oddly, it can't pick up the wifi at the outer limits of my home setup whereas all the previous HTCs did. Win some lose some.

I haven't yet mastered the mouse-thingy but will take the effort to learn it, and also try the 4-way touchpad config.

Dialling with small number pad will take some getting used to. I have dik vingers.

Overall this device is very well spec'd, and a real bargain at the price, especially compared to the latest HTCs, and even more so when you consider that Garmin Mobile XT is bundled (I paid R1100 for GMXT on my Kaiser, from Leaf). It comes with an extra battery and a case-charger which is pretty nifty. Car and mains charger also included. I really hate the proprietary USB and earphone connector as now I have to carry extra cables rather than a standard mini-USB.

Now to carry on customising ... easy on PC screen with MyMobiler. Fiddling is an endless ritual with these marvellous little devices, so I'm expecting another day of zero productivity.

Desperate for WM6.1 ROM update.

yes so after waiting 2 weeks for mtn eastage (useless B@#$^) i finally got my i780 and waiting a extra 5 days for MTN EASTGATE (yes they still pritty useless) i got my sim activated. anyway the phone is super great. the 3g connection is awesome (watching youtube videos with no lag) and im downloaded a 11meg file in like 1min. i went to isohunt and found around 200 extra applications you can install on the phone.

the phone itself is super fast. fits well in your pocket super light and I tend to forget its there. i charged the phone for 17hours and it it went for around 5 days without using the gps. i think in full use it will be around 3 days.

It's all good that everyone is pointing out all the apps that dont work on the phone and trying to find fault with it everywhere they can, but isn't not being able to buy a pouch or screen protector a major flaw ?

just download the cab file that applies to your isp. copy it over to your storage card, run it and reboot your phone. it will install all the settings for you, gprs,3G, Hsdpa, MMS etc ...

pointui is not bad, but rather get yourself Hinavigator, it has far better customisations and looks alot better as well.

I'm blocked at work, so I can't check it PointUI now. Is it the application that allows one to customise the Today screen? More important - is it free? ;)

i used the rom from here :

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402529

Works like a charm, fixed alot of bugs, specialy bluetooth and WIFI bugs.

Only problems i had was the guy removed opera and java from the rom, don't know why he did it, but i just installed the new opera 9.5 and jbed java which both are better and more updated versions than the ones samsung supplied anyway.

E1 from XDA (or other internet source), E1 as opened from the box, or E1 from authorized service centre upgrade?

Would be great to have the time to do the XDA (EFN's) version of the WM 6.1 ROM, but I'm scared of voiding the warranty and need extra hours in my day.

Does anyone have ANY news on local available firmware updates?

Also - any idea on where I can buy a cradle for the car when using it as GPS?

the wm6.1 rom from XDA (EFN's) version is HORRIBLE !!! I flashed this rom to test, hated it and reflashed the E1 rom back instead.

The WM6.1 rom on XDA (EFN's) version is designed to work at 96DPI so everything is off centre ( he filled the big blanks on the side with HTC logo's ) and the rom is basicly converted to look like an HTC theme which i hate. i have a samsung, why on earth do i want htc logo's and themes all over my phone ?

apart from what i mentioned above it also has these bugs :

Known Bugs:
- SPB Mobile Shell 2.0 does not run 100% (Still not tested) - update on SPB MS 2.1 available now at the bottom
- In the default 96 DPI mode, some Windows will be displayed akwardly small but 100% functional.
- Some Pop-ups still strayed from the center but 100% functional
- Today Theme not designed for 96DPI will not display properly
- 96 DPI mode will have lesser support for Asian SIPs
- Installing Opera 9.51b1 will render odd behaviour to notifications (email and SMS notification goes quiet)
- GPS Port Splitter 1.2 WILL NOT WORK - been tested and tweaked to no avail

rather flash the E1 rom from here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402529

and install jbed java and opera 9.5 manually.

Iv'e tested the E1 for weeks now and havnt found any bugs so far.

If you looking for a nice today plugin, use Hinavigator, it works like a charm and is very customisable :)

it is not a cooked E1 rom. it is a rom released by Samsung, he only removed a few items. it is a wm6 rom. everything on it is standard, the only things missing is java and opera. but those you can manually add yourself if you use any of them.

no need to backup your rom, you wont need it again. just follow instructions, flash russian rom first, then PDA second. it is really easy and takes about 15mins for the whole process.

just remember in mirage updater,

For first rom : Select the button that reads EBOOT+PDA+PHONE and select the RUSSIAN .img file

For second rom select button that readsPDA and select the .bin rom file.

also take out the battery in between flashes so you can clean boot your phone before doing the second flash. do the second striaght after the first, dont boot into your phone after the first flash.

in otherwords : remove battery, insert battery, flash, remove battery, insert battery and flash again.

it is really easy to do it, if you get stuck just ask :)

Also the blue tooth keeps disconnecting every 30 seconds or so."

To have the bluetooth working is crucial to me - is this still a problem? Is there a fix?
Any other bugs that you are aware of on this ROM?

Have you tried EFN's version 3.3? Just seems like they have more updates more often...Can you load the Hinavigator plugin over this version and effectivele replace the HTC Home plugin and contiue as normal?

hmm, that is odd. i had the bluetooth disconnecting every 30 seconds bug on the C3 rom... anyway, how i fixed it was to move the bluetooth dongle to a new usb port and then do a rescan for devices ( removed device from list and repaired it. ). for some odd reason it wont work on the old usb port to this day. if i stick it into that port it disconnects constantly, even after i flashed to this new rom. So try moving the dongle to a front port or something.

The java thing, im still at work, but when i get home i'll upload a java that works perfect with this rom, i'll also upload hinavigator too :)

Should be at around 5:30PM.

as for EFN's version 3.3 see the post on the last page, they have lot of updates for a reason, it has so MANY bugs they'll be updating for a year to get it stable :

the wm6.1 rom from XDA (EFN's) version 3.3 is HORRIBLE !!! I flashed this rom to test, hated it and reflashed the E1 rom back instead.

The WM6.1 rom on XDA (EFN's) version is designed to work at 96DPI so everything is off centre ( he filled the big blanks on the side with HTC logo's ) not to mention at 96DPI everything is really small and hard to read, and the rom is basicly converted to look like an HTC theme which i hate. i have a samsung, why on earth do i want htc logo's and themes all over my phone ?

Just copy the files to your phone and run them.

For opera there are 2 files, one is the cab install file, the other a skin file. the skin file makes opera compatible with the 320x320 display. install the cab file, then copy the skin file to your main memory, "application data/opera 9 beta/skins" directory and overwrite the old file.

I did the E1 ROM upgrade over the weekend. Works 100% and phone is now more responsive. Using Hinavigator and so far so good - better than PointUI and HTC home versions.

Amaedict, thanks for all the help!

One problem though: Opera 8.6 started closing down automatically since yesterday just after opening it or after navigating to first page, it also did this when I was on B1 ROM, so it's definately not the ROM. I have installed Opera 9.51b previously, works well but it resets all sounds & notification settings every single time you run it, resulting in having to setup all notication settings every time you want to browse. Now there is apparently a workaround by doing a reg hack, but it comes down to still having to run this regedit every time after using Opera 9.51b...

** Any ideas / alternatives / fixes welcome **

amaedict
19-08-2008, 09:13 PM
you are most welcome :)

yes the sound notifications / opera bug is annoying :(

the wm6.1 upgrade is due out in the next 4-8 weeks, guess we just have to sit back and wait.

or maybe try this new build of opera : http://www.pda4x.com/read.php?tid=75885&keyword=opera

i can't try it right now, im not at home, will try it in the morning. if anyone else wants to try it and post their results that would be great :)

if that doesnt work, we can allways SPAM the opera dev team for a fix :) :p

..:EDIT:.. UPDATE :

according to this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409258&page=32

they discuss the opera bug near the bottom of that page.

It's a bug in Opera, not this ROM. Opera 9.51b1 will disable notifications on any PocketPC you run it.

BTW, someone asked how to track changes on the registry. I use CeRegEditor (a PC app). Connect your PocketPC to the computer with ActiveSync, run CeRegEditor and connect, take a snapshot, do whatever you need, then compare registry with snapshot.

seems it is a opera bug and not the rom, so guess i'll try the new opera link above, if that dont work nothing we can do but wait for a fixed version. :(

YET ANOTHER UPDATE :

ok, i found a sort of temp solution for the problem, notif-blinker. It blinks your LED with set colours ( blue, green and orange ) etc when you have messages, emails and missed calls etc .... you can also set your keyboard to light up with the led.

Not the perfect solution, but for now it works pretty well, atleast you can use opera and still see when their is a incoming message.

Download link for latest version, this version has a gui : http://www.zenyee.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/zenyee-notif-blinkercab030809a.zip

since 0.3.xxxx you no longer need to meddle around with registry if you are not comfortable. It comes with a configuration UI - which you can access from \Program Files\Zenyee\Notif Blinker\Notif Blinker Config.exe

I've reflashed my phone back to the E1 ROM and will probably wait for the official WM6.1 before reflashing. There seems to be to many issues with EFN's 3.3XG Reloaded ROM

I downloaded and purchased SPB Mobile Shell and am really impressed with it. Far nicer than either the Samsung or the HTC Today plugin.

One problem that I've encountered is that I'm battling to try & get a GPRS monitor program to work. I've tried both SPB and Smartphone (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=6023) and neither seem to record the data usage. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts ?

amaedict, how have you found EFN's new 6.1 ROM ?

Any issues ?

amaedict
29-08-2008, 06:02 PM
yes a few.

My phone over the last two days has frozen 4 times and just switched off for no reason twice. It was expected since this rom was ported from a another model and they have not really done anything to it except remove 2 programs and add some drivers, it has not gone through any testing stages or anything. The bad part of it is that my phone is also my alarm clock and it froze the night before last and i was 2mins late for work due to the alarm not going off  :o

And i started my day like Neo in the matrix with the boss giving him a speech about his attitude and re-evaluating his priorities etc ;)

Apart from those two issues everything else runs like a dream. I'm giving it one more chance, if it freezes again i will be going back to the E1 rom and wait for official wm6.1 upgrade from samsung in October which is around 4 to 6 weeks away. Besides, Samsung has promised some nice added goodies which they keeping secret, so atleast we know wer'e not just getting a stock rom :)

anyone else experience stability issues with EFN's rom ? i have considered the fact that it could be software that is clashing since i have around 20 apps installed, but im too lazy to probe right now, will have another crack at it over the weekend.

....:: Update ::....

I allways wondered weither i made the right choice choosing this phone, my original choice was between the I780 and the HTC diamond / PRO.

Well, today i was at a guys house fixing his pc and he just picked himself up the new HTC diamond phone and i got to play with it a bit.....

All i can say is that i definitely made the right choice choosing the I780, it is miles ahead of HTC..... :p

So my day ended and weekend started with a smile :)

@sm68

I tried fring, but it takes over your whole phone, it sets itself to auto start with windows, it also like to randomly dialup 3G connection and it seems to drain battery life faster than i can swop them out. Nimbuzz is a far superior program and runs all major messangers including skype. they have a java version availible ( which works well with I780 after some headaches and tweaking ) and are suppose to be releasing the wm version very soon, i'd recommend you keep and eye open for that.

ALSO IMPORTANT FIND :

If like me you have been unable to find any screen protectors or pouches for your I780 and have suffered minor or severe scratches and are very pissed off about it, well, i have stumbled onto a nice solution online :p

it is called Displex, it only costs R99 and it is designed to remove scratches from cellphones, ipods etc , and best of all it is stocked localy in Cape Town.

Here is a link to the product page : http://www.igear.co.za/productinfo.aspx?productID=6684

And here is a link to a youtube video made by a user to show how well it works : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5y6vRq8fF4

So all is not lost

Anyway, i placed myself an order for a tube and will test it myself, i have also ordered a screenprotector from boxwave in the USA as well as a cleartype case, cost me a fortune but i cannot handle anymore scratches on my phone no matter how minor they are.

Here are some pic's of the case i bought :

http://www.boxwave.com/images_bw/products/thumbnails/samsung_i780_activecase_clear_lg.jpg

O, and on a happier note, i just bought a nice laptop yesterday for a reasonable price, hope to get it by monday http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=8897621

So basicly i will be broke for the month of september. but my phone will look new and i'll have a really nice looking notebook ...

Thanks for that amaedict; which phone did you choose when downloading Nimbuzz, I don't see the i780 listed?

lol, that's a good question, i cant remember which version it was i chose. I do know that i struggled quite a bits to get it to work the way i wanted it too.

best is to choose a version, go throught the setup process, if it is not to your liking, delete and do again. I think i chose a model with a 240x240 display or one of the brands that also had a square display. not sure if i chose blackberry or hp etc. honestly cant remember.

good luck, if you have any problems post them here so we can establish a bug list.

This morning i did notice that when my 3G connects, my mouse pointer is very slow for about a min... i'd say that is a very annoying bug.

I haven't had any issues with the phone freezing up as of yet.

I'm not using the mouse but rather the 4-way navigation (and that's only when I'm not using the stylus) and haven't had any issues with the speed thereof.

Got the phone 3 weeks ago or so. It freezes twice a day and when I woke up this morning the screen was off and it was totally unresponsive. I had to take the battery out to get it running again. When the 6.1 firmware comes out I am going to have to trek all the way to MTN and wait days for them to flash it aren't it? So lame...

Well only for the first three months do you have to do this, thereafter only one hard reset per day is required.

Seriously, just do a few hard resets now, then configure it to your liking and you'll see a difference.

I ordered 2 sets, which means i am selling one set to anyone that is interested. I ordered it all the way from the USA and had to wait a month for it to arrive, but boy was it worth it :)

Anyway, i am selling both cover and screen protector ( both still in packadging ) for R450 which i think is fair as it is roughly what i paid for it with delivery.

if anyone is interested you can contact me at 079 509 7421 and we'll take it from there.

Also word of caution :
you cannot get these items in SA, so dont delay, someone else might beat you to the punch :)

So, anyone know what's the latest news on wm6.1 update? I see we can't update from Samsung's website, they don't accept the version number.
I just got my phone today - I know, I'm late to the party :D - it came with JCHC2, whats the latest firmware? Linky? I wish I could just do the official update through samsung's site..egh.

That's only for north european countries, though you can get it done by entering a valid version nr and then doing some basic hex editing on the update file. But you can get the SA update here (http://samsungblog.co.za/downloads/samsung-i780-windows-upgrade-i780pjchi1).

This upgrade has given me a head ache.

I spoke to Vodaworld and they say 'yes - we have it! Bring the phone in' and call me 2 days later to they made a mistake.

I went to a Samsung upgrade place in Randburg, they said 'yes - we have it! Bring the phone in' so I did ... they told me 2 hours later they made a mistake. I paid R200.00 for that mistake.

I emailed the same company now (spoke to a different person) and they say 'yes - we have it! Bring the phone in' and then 2 hours later I'm told 'oh - the Samsung technical guy said we can't do it'

Thing is it has been done (a previous user on here got it early January ... ) but no one seems able to trace anything. Even Samsung don't know what's going on - they referred me to this company.

Last Samsung I get

I see that only the PDA part of the your ROM had been upgraded to the latest but the phone part is still the old ROM. Not sure if you have installed the Samsung CDMA USB driver on your PC from the Samsungblog. Yea - the thing is definatley the Samsung CDMA TEchnologies.

I've downloaded the zip from your link, unzipped and clicked 'setup' - but it sets up ActiveSync 4.5 again. The only thing that *may* be different is this active sync includes that driver (from a Samsung site) whereas the previous one I had (from an MS site), didn't.

The correct answer = This is the lifetime of the handset however many years, in other words coupled to the IMEI Number of the handset irospective of the years or ownership(For LIFE COUPLED TO THE IMEI NUMBER OF THE PHONE). The IMEI Number dies so does the Garmin Mobile XT Life time License.:)
