View Full Version : Ubuntu 8.04 x64 Stereo to 5.1 Sound.. How???
When I play mp3's I want the music to come out, out of all my 5.1 speakers not only the front two. In the past I edited .asconf (I think that's its name) file and it worked. How ever now with pulse audio built in, it completely messes things up..
I can't get it to work like a used to. I even changed the default audio to Alsa and OSS but nothing helps.
Any ideas?

Have you checked the settings in your media player? Also have a look at your sound system settings again at the system settings .

Just redone all of that, it is all set right. Perhaps there is another way to do this by using Pulse Audio?
At the moment Google is not my friend

PulseAudio is the devil's spawn at the moment. I think the concept is excellent. But getting it to work properly is another issue. I had issues with it on my F8 install which led me to remove altogether.
Did you not notice the seperate Linux forum?

well that's one of the things you get when you go for a distro like Ubuntu. The inclusion of the latest packages. PulseAudio needs to be refined more. But I am actually excited by its development. Being able to seperately set the volume of the various apps using your soundcard from one interface is a pretty great idea if you ask me.
Many people say that once you get it running properly it really works. For me the fact that some of the TV apps I use didn't support it led to lag and conflicts. Once all apps I use support it, I will be loading it up again.
Given there was a way to effectively remove it in F8, I can only assume there is a similar possibly way in Ubuntu.

Mp3s are not 5.1 you should test a DVD to diagnose if you are able to play surround.

I can get 5.1 surround from 5.1 sources aka DVD's etc. But what I what to do is duplicate the stereo signal to both front and back speakers.

Then that should be done within the player I assume, don't think pulse is to be blamed for this.
EDIT:
2 Days 2 GO!

Duplicating it with the player doesn't seem to work either. I dunno in the past editing certain files always worked but now for some reason it won't.

Getting music to play through all speakers vs getting it to play in surround is 2 diff things I think.
Surely somewhere you are able to change it to 6 channels from 2?
BTW I could not even get it to play through all speakers in Ubuntu 7.10. :(
Haven't seen 8.04 yet.

I still have this problem, weird thing is that it works fine in the x86 version but not in the x64. Do I really need to use the 64bit version or can I tweak the x86 to see all 4GB of my system RAM?
