Hey,

Ive always had the opinion that golf 1's are overpriced. Its a shape thats pushing 30 years old, and the technology hasnt changed much in the < 2000 models. Granted, the newer ones have a/c and fuel injection, but you end up paying 70k for one.

The reason im asking is because the mk1 is a car that im considering to buy (2000 model). But for 40k (a bit more than the golf) you could get a clio with a/c and power steering etc. Any thoughts?

Yes they are. It is a ripoff and an insult. But, if like most South Africans, you are an ignorant, uninformed consumer whore you will gladly pay for it anyway. Getting f u c k e d by VWSA and asking for more is second only to having a braai as the national sport.

Easy tiger. I think somebody needs to take his medication.

ALL our cars are over priced. In fact some manufacturers were caught fixing prices a few years back and got into a spot of trouble. They paid a fine and all is well. Prices didn't drop though because they said it would hurt the second hand sector. Load of bull if you asked me. Did you know you can buy a BMW 3 series cheaper in Aus than here and they are made here and exported to Aus. Just pick a make and model here and go to the USA web site for that manufacturer and check the price. I guarantee they buy it at 50% to 60% of what we pay. Not to mention our high interest rates that we have to pay on the finance. Government wont do anything about it because the manufacturers are MAJOR employers.

It's our own fault though. If we South Africans didn't keep buying new cars every 4 to 5 years they wouldn't be able to hike the prices like they do. Supply and demand!

They hand built since 2005(maybe 2004).
The machine that builds them expired after 10 years. They havent bought a new machine, which is a good thing I think.....

Yes, cars are overpriced, but can you imagine what traffic would be like if they were cheaper? Twice as many cars on the road!

Everyone should get a motorbike instead :)

Overpriced, unsafe and likely to be stolen.

Best to buy a second hand MK1 Original IMO, I plan on doing this and restoring it myself.

Hopefully I'll find a Good GTi ;)

Not likely to be produced for much longer if the retooling plans I've heard about go ahead in Uitenhage.

I mean, im tempted to spend 50k on a 2001 astra than 30k on a golf 1. Look at the difference.
