What gives?

Last night I started to download Ubuntu 8.04 dvd release for i386.

I was waiting for it to say on mirror.ac.za that syncing the Ubuntu mirros was complete.
As soon as it was, at about 6pm I began downloading and got to about 28% before I had to shut down and go to bed.

Today the file no longer exists on the server, http://mirror.ac.za/ says, Last synched:
Fri 25 Apr 2008 16:53 GMT+2, but today the directory, http://ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu-cd...releases/8.04/, has reverted back to only containing alpha 4?

This sucks, I want it to start working again so that I can download it on my free local before the end of the month, on 384kbps it takes long.

leg.uct.ac.za hasn't got it yet, haven't found anywhere else that does (local). If anyone has a source please, let me know.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Sync in progress, started:
Fri 25 Apr 2008 18:00 GMT+2

So hopefully now it will be kosher!

EDIT:

Last synched:

And it's not kosher, still alpha 4.

EDIT:

I have finally found another mirror, YAY! Going to give it a whirl...ftp://ftp.sun.ac.za/pub/iso-images/ubuntulinux/hardy/dvd/ Works, but my download manager says it's not resumable, also really slow.

You caught me red handed, I've been lurking the Linux Ubuntu threads, thinking of giving it a whirl some time ;) How big is a Linux installation in general?

Don't really know, I've only used old version (6.06) of Ubuntu from the CD dist, and Fedora Core 1 a while ago.

There's lot's of optional stuff though so probably up to 2gb maybe, from the DVD dist. I would have thought.

Cool, and does Winamp work on Linux? I'm already using FF so I'll use that too.

I have no idea, I would have thought no. I have not heard of winamp for linux but there's probably like 500 alternatives.

What's the difference between the DVD and the CD? what extras does it include?

And where can I download the Kubuntu DVD with KDE4 locally?

Take a look at the Tuks ftp site (ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/mirrors/ubuntu/ubuntu-cdimage/releases/hardy/release/)
I went and fetched it off the network yesterday.

tera - i usually setup the system partition as 15GB. None of my three distros with KDE, Gnome, XFCE and all sorts of other apps loaded takes up more than 7.5GB (and I am not shy when it comes to installing apps. And I don't typically uninstall). The home partition is no more than 2GB. No need for Winamp, Amarok is the bee's kness.

But then again the games related partition is quite huge. So to the media one (altho this was a NTFS partition setup when I still switched between Linux and Windows). I will be getting a new harddrive and I will not have access to my media when in Windows.

What's great about Linux is that application besed recommendations are largely not dependant on what distro you use.

I just installed Linux for the first time, to see how it is etc.

Its nice, fine and everything but what sucks is it doesnt have nice GUI to install and setup settings and prgorams... WTF Is this Terminal command prompt install vibe? Why make it so complicated, self-installers for the win :D

Otherwise if I didnt play games and used Quickbooks I would considor moving for good, much faster and responsive... Also I just install it within windows and booted in to it to give it a bash.

The cd doesnt have an installation gui. the dvd, however, does, as it is the live-dvd...

Is this once you have installed your Linux distro? Most distros come with a GUI installer. And even if they don't the step to install one and forget about the command shell is an easy one. Though I prefer to recommend people to use the command line. You become so much in control of your computing experience. But that's a whole other issue.

I dont mean the install of the Linux distro itself... Im actually talking about editing settings... Like when I wanted to setup my PPPOE connection, its not diffucult to do,but why not have it as a self installer with steps or buttons to get to the self installer... Why do I need to go to terminal type in command and then follow in prompts.

It wasnt hard to do but just annoying... Probably cause Im used to doing it the windows way, which is simple either just fimiliar

What packages do they put on the Dvd?

I also love Winamp, but Amarok is also very good! :)

Lots more than on the CD, I assume. So I'd rather download the whole DVD now on my free local, than have to use that funny apt get thingumy and pour all my international down the drain whenever I need some other Ubuntu package.:(

my connection was also very slow; let it overnight, and it dl 96% then finally decided to just close connection; I should have used a dl manager, but my eagerness to download juct backfired.

now using a proper dl manager with multiple opportunities to resume download;

try the mirror.ac.za; they are faster.

The speeds fluctuate, it's a University Server (Stellenbosch U acually), I'm sure they have limited bandwidth.

Yeah the most I got was 20KB/s, currently at 2KB/s been 3 days so far and only at 80% for a 3GB file :(

Dont know if winamp works (you can always try it through wine), but why would you want to, when you have amarok, the best single piece of software out there.

Seriously, none is its equal
