Am I correct with my recollection that Sigma lenses carry a 3 year warranty? :o

What happend?I was at a birthday party yesterday taking some shots - when I went to zoom in the ring twisted but the barrel wouldn't move.
Luckily I had that ostentatious drain pipe (nb not magic) in my bag but that is only 70mm at its widest. I did some of the best candid portraits I've ever taken with it so it wasnt a complete loss.

The Macro switch didn't get stuck by any chance? I find that happens when it's halfway between settings.

LOL! Isn't your Sigma 70mm at it's widest too?

I find the idea of being candid (and hopefully unnoticed) with one of those unimaginable. I have a hard time staying unnoticed, no matter what lens I use.

Aah right. Is it nice?

I wish they would make their larger L glas available in all-black too. I would love the 70-200 f/2.8L but there's no way I'm walking around with one of those in white.

Aah right. Is it nice?nice? Yeah. It makes a great walkabout lens thanks to it's size and range.
Took it to the shop this afternoon and they have no problem with honouring the warrenty.
After the problem yesterday I'm glad I got the f4. The 2.8 would have been a pain in the neck.....literally! :)

With what the 24-105 f/4L weighs I can only imagine.
It still mystifies my why a faster lens has to be that much bigger and that much more expensive. Surely it's down to the diaphram and maybe a few of the glass elements (I would imagine the front one(s)). I'm just guessing, of course, I know nothing of lens design. But I do know that over the past few decades, we've become pretty good at minutrising things. I would have hoped at least a little of that would have filtered down to lens design.

I got it from Teletek in Greenacres. There is still a year left on the warranty.
this is kinda off topic but i heard from someone that Katz is closing down. now i've bought my lens and flash from them, how do i go about with warranty issues? do i go direct with Sigma?

do i go direct with Sigma?no. You'll need to deal with their distributor Tudor Photographic in cape town.

Took it in today - they've sent it to cpt (to Tudor) for repairs so I'll hopefully have it back in a couple of weeks.

It's a great everyday walkabout lens that lives on one of my bodies. I was still reluctant to bring it in even if it is sounding a bit rough.
in my case its my everyday lens and it's such a brilliant lens. i'm so lost without it.
thanks for the great advice on it :)

LOL, i see there's a Tamron 18-270mm f3.5 - 6.3 Di II VC out and about somewhere. It's nice and wide and it is almost as long as the 300mm plus it has VC

Yeah, thats pretty much what I'm thinking....
My kit lens and 70-300 are always with me.. but it would be nice to have to lens with a fairly large range as well and the 28-300 seems to fit that bill perfectly....

the 70-300 is a Sigma lens as well...
and probably not really worth keeping if I get a 28-300.... but I'd have to figure that one out... just trying to see the different costs of the Sigma lens from a few diff places.
When I have a bit more cash lying around I'm looking at a 150-500 as well.. but they're just v pricey.. :(

Well, I'm quite happy with Sigma right now. My 10-20 was getting soft on the left side of the frame - no idea why. I sent it in (it's still under warranty), which resulted in two positive things:
1. It didn't get stolen with my camera
2. They sent me a brand new one!
This leaves me in a good position. If I decide to go for a 5D or 5DmkII instead of another 40D or 50D, I can sell this one off for a better price.

I had no plans to, especially after shooting an event with one. Low light AF is not great on it.

Oh, I thought the 400D didn't have it either. Or did you just get your sensor so dirty that you had to clean it manually?

Oh, I thought the 400D didn't have it either. Or did you just get your sensor so dirty that you had to clean it manually? Some things even the shaker cant loosen. Sensors get dirty - its only once you notice the dust that it begins to bug you and sometimes its better not to even test for it.
But yeah - the 400D and the 40D share the same sensor cleaning technology as the 1000D. It isnt perfect but its better than nothing.

I didn't say it's bad. It's just not what I was used to (40D). Yeah, high ISO is bad on it. So much for the "physics" argument of pixel size...

. . . and does it take into account the technological advancements that might have been made as a result of more than two years and millions in R&D?

 Which argument is that.
C'mon bwana, you know what I'm talking about. The idea that noise will be worse at a higher resolution than on a lower resolution on the same size sensor.
. . . and does it take into account the technological advancements that might have been made as a result of more than two years and millions in R&D?
No, it doesn't, and that's the problem with the argument.
BigAl-sa
18-03-2009, 12:15 PM
The pixel size argument is around isolation (insulation) of the individual pixels. They are getting much smaller and closer together, so quantum effects (such as tunneling) are no longer negligible.
Does this make it sound as though I know what I'm talking about, or should you be reaching for the foil?
:D
koffiejunkie
18-03-2009, 02:47 PM
You are right, BigAl, but the problem is the argument assumes that the sensor elements fill the sensor surface edge to edge with no space in-between, which is not the case. There is a lot of space in-between each element, and that space is getting smaller. If I remember correctly, the sensor elements on the 40D sensor are larger than on the 30D.

I'm not overly phased as I was planning on sending it back once more before the warranty expires and now I have a valid excuse to :)
