View Full Version : Theoretical way to connect multiple PC's at the same time with the "NeoTel device"

How does this sound?
Have the "NeoTel device" connected to one PC, that has internet Connection sharing enabled.
Then connect other PCs through a router (or switch? I don't really no the difference), to the one sharing the Internet connection.
If it works, the only drawback I can see is that the the PC with the "NeoTel device" must be on when the others need to connect to the net.
I don't know if there are many security issues with Internet connection sharing enabled, but perhaps one could set up a secure server box or something connected to the "NeoTel device", I'm sure some would.
Thoughts?
P.S. I'll send them an e-mail to ask if this is possible with their "NeoTel device", but I don't see why not.

yeah will work use a cheap hub and your set.
Have the "NeoTel device" connected to one PC, that has internet Connection sharing enabled. The ICS-PC is technically the router in this setup [it routes traffic between gateways], and to connect the other PCs to the ICS-PC, one uses a multi-port switch [aka hub] which is not as clever as a router is.

Afaik, it'll work for browsing but not gaming/filesharing. Those just don't seem to gel with ICS....but maybe I was just doing something wrong when I tried to set up ICS last time.

Will the NeoTel device work in Linux? Then one could use IPCop.

In Eastern Europe two of the CDMA networks supply the Asus WL-500g Premium router with Koppel firmware in order to share a range of CDMA USB modems/phones wirelessly. You can buy this router in SA for around R850 from Ngr computers.
Both Zapp and Cell C are owned by the Saudi Oger Group although it would appear that Zapp considers uncapped high speed data services to be much more important than Cell C does.

And what if I've already spent good money on a PPPOE router? I bought it because it will work with a wide variety of modems (iBurst / ADSL, etc). I'm pretty sure Neotel will provide a PPPOE modem for their network in the future.
For now I don't mind using ICS/iptables, but I'm already losing my investesment in my iBurst PPPOE modem (desktop modem) and buying yet another modem that cannot be used on other networks (thanks Sentech and iBurst), I'm not too keen on throwing away my router as well.
I really can't wait to sign up!!! My iBurst contract has just finished and I'm itching to switch to Neotel... I reakon I'll buy a third-party PPPOE/CDMA device. Voice isn't really that important to me, only data.

There are routers available with USB connections for devices such as NeoTel's. If memory serves me correctly, D-Link have one or two available on the market.

Will third party devices work on the NeoTel network ?
If they do then this will make things much better.

Surely they would, unless they somehow prevent devices other than their own from functioning on their network, that would be anti-competitive.
My question is will they subtract the cost of their device from your subscription if you have a third party device.

ICS will work, same as with any shared internet connection.
to get past wierd NAT issues with gaming, use try using uPNP from the ICS box, easier to punch holes in the fw than normal windows firewall. You'll see an additional interface on your pc as if the modem was locally connected.

Will the NeoTel device work in Linux? Then one could use IPCop.
If it's compatible.
If IPCop/Smoothwall can use USB devices like that neotel device.
Personally, I'll rather wait for a proper Ethernet device and use that, knowing that any modern OS/firewall will be able to connect to it.

More than likely they will have their own firmware, that is possibly why they only support one device. I hope and this is a big HOPE that the reason that they only have one device is NOT that they could only find one device that works on their network... that would really suck !

Well I mailed them like I said I would and here's the response that I got:
Dear X
Thank you for showing interest in Neotel
At the moment Neotel's internet connection sharing is unavailable but this services will be implemented
in the near future
Kind regards,
X

From that, I don't even know if they are thinking of the same thing we are.

Sure does not sound like the person knew what you were asking about.

That scares me a bit... that person does not have a clue.
Unless that is a AI response ?
Then I'm really scared.

Do you think I should have put it a different way?
My original message to them was this:
Good day.
I was wondering if someone at NeoTel could confirm whether or not Internet connection sharing can be used with NeoTel's modem?
Thanks for any information.
Pretty straightforward I would have thought.
Maybe they thought I meant sharing an ISP account across several devices or something?

There is only one way to do that; but many ways of achieving this
A) connecting device to a router
--1) Using PC as a router: For this you will need a PC connected to the device; on the PC you will have to have IP forwarding, DHCP(if you want dynamic IP allocation), Wifi/Bluetooth/Cable to connect the devices; all these devices will use this PC as there Gateway to the internet.
--2) Using stand-alone router: This by far is by far the easiest and most efficient; you can get a Wifi router which can be connected to the device and this provides you the WAN connection via the device and the LAN connection via Wifi/Bluetooth/Cable.
PS: Provided the router can negotiate the WAN connection via the device ie. Neotel phone, USB modem etc.etc.
--3) Internet sharing on PC: This in theory should be the simplest but in my experience with Vista; is actually a nightmare...U just dial up connecting your PC to the device; and activating the Internet sharing on it; then using a X-cable connect the 2nd PC to your PC; DHCP and gateways settings are default.
If you would like more assistance on these email: cradlepoint@koia.net; we've done alot of work on interfacing to the the Neotel devices.
