Hi all

I dont know the dates of this but take a look at this articlle I found:
http://www.southafricanemb.se/communic2.htm

Specifically note this part:
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">
Integrated Services Digital Network channels saw a 25% increase from 374 062 in 2001 to 467 518
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Not sure if it refers to local only...

In my head that means 467 518 x 64k = 29, 921, 152k = 29GB or so

Now wouldnt they need that much international bandwidth to support all thos ISDN lines?

I am probably way off but that seems like a lot of bandwidth to me.

Another article about the Sat 3 cable and what percentage of the bandwidth Telkom has:

http://www.tenet.ac.za/Publications/GlobalResearchNetworking.pdf

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Telkom SA has the largest single share - some 30%<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Just as an aside, ISDN is primarily used by big business as the interconnect to the PSTN for their PBXs, notably in the form of a so called primary rate interface PRI (that is actually an E1 or 32x64 B channels). This is the cheepest way to get a lot of lines onto your telephone switch.

I would guess only a small % of the lines that are quoted in that article are actually used for Internet access.

a little birdy told me that the biggest owner of the international bandwidth was UNDW (University of Durban Westville)
Amazing and about to verify if that is fact or not.

Look forward to hearing what you find. IS told me they had over 300mb of international bandwidth. I think at current the SAT3 is cable of 20Gb, of which telkom has 30%. Cant wait for it to reach its final capacity of 120GB.

Peapod : I can tell you for absolute sure that the ex-UDW does not and never did have the biggest amount of International bandwidth.....

(I know this cos I worked at the merged Institution of UKZN, and the ex-UND blew UDW out of the water in terms of bandwidth) The merged institution has roughly 10mbs on Tenet IIRC
