View Full Version : Anti-smash and grab window tints

Anyone have any idea how much smash&grab coating might cost for my car? I don't want it tinted, just anti-glare and to make it difficult to smash my window.
I emailed PG Glass a week or two ago, but they never replied :(
We had our windows tinted at a place that PG Glass recommended and it was around R1800-00. The tint was advertised as preventing a smash and grab (in that it would take more than one punch to break the window, basically it is a double action as opposed to just one).

Depends on the thickness you want. I think price ranges from R1600 to R2500 when I last got a quote

glasfit quoted me 1,250, but as they mentioned it probably depends on the thickness and i guess the darkness of the tint

Mine cost R1900. We chose the lightest tint plus smash&grab proofing. Was done through VW dealership in 2006.

R1700-R2000 sounds about right.
I had 35% on my previous car, its a bit dark, the 50% tint looks much nicer.
Cons: Your windows get dirty quicker
Pros: I hit a ditch & rolled my corsa back in April en route back from CT, no airbags & my brother and i got out of it without a single cut/scratch or bruise. The smash & grab caused the one window to pop up in one piece instead of shattering, the rest just cracked and stayed in place. I walked to the window, picked it up and threw it back into the car ... it looked quite odd.
I feel much more comfortable leaving valuables in the car with it on, after my window went i could check how strong those 2 layers are. It doesnt need to be indestructable... just enough of an annoyance to move the dief on to the next car and leave yours alone.
I would really recommend it. (the smash & grab, not rolling your car)

If you're going to leave stuff out in the open you might as well leave the door unlocked.

I thought they do all the windows, don't they tint your windscreen ?

I thought they do all the windows, don't they tint your windscreen ?Side windows are generally easy to break with a spark plug or center punch - the windscreen needs to be hardened against flying debris.

Can someone pls explain this to me
You would rather pay R 1.5k - R 2 k for a smash and grab coating
where you could get a very light tint for R 80.00 that does the same thing
LMAO !!!!
I can't believe what I'm reading, we have some very gullable people on this forum :D

Isn't tinting the same as a colored cling wrap film on the windows where smash&grab coat is some kind of special membrane? Maybe it's just good marketing.

I would love to see you try and throw out my window with little spark plug bits. It does the exact same thing. The coating is on the outside of the window. Thus Keeps the window from shattering, that is what the Smash and grab crap do to
There is no difference.

err, they dont put it on your front windscreen, only the back window.
i also dont leave things in plain sight. but when i do need to put something away inside the car, i dont feel as worried about it as i used to.
Hitting the windows numerous times still wont get them far... it's quite a bitch to get through both layers and then you still need to cut a hole once you've punctured it. Not worth the PT / noise factor
i didnt get it for the tint, but a slight tint does help protect the leather inside a bit

S&G is quite a bit thicker and is applied to both sides of the window.

Ok i don't want to shoot you down but this is rather obvious.
Your Windscreen can't be broken - Shatterprufe
So them trying to smash and grab through the Windscreen is rather useless don't you think ?
They caught you hook, line and sinker ;)

Ok to accomplish what ?
1. Prevent the window from shattering. Tinting does exactly the same.
2. Have you ever seen a car with a tint that has been the victim of a Smash and Grab ?
The dudes don't even attempt it.
Either way, if it makes you feel better, it's probably not a waste of R 1.8k

My mate had this done to all four windows and the back one.
It is like a layer of film that not only tints the window but means that it doesn't shatter. So, in theory a smash-n-grabber would still break the window but it would not shatter so he wouldn not be able to get in...Would help make theft a little more difficult too I would imagine.
My mate paid R1400 for all the windows at PG Autoglass for a small car with small windows.
I am wondering if it is worth it.
Cos when someone does break the glass, it is still broken and needs replacing- and the tint will mean it costs more to replaces.
Also, once the window has been smashed, what is to prevent a thief from pushing the window in, bending it almost and getting in like that?
Does it do anything to your insurance premiums if you tell them you have it?
What are your guys' thoughts on the matter?

It protects the inside of your car from the sun as well. I like mine and think that it is worth while. It wont stop them breaking in but it is harder to see inside and will prevent them taking anything in the event of a smash and grab as they will have to hit the window a few times.. giving you time to react

I see.
Fair enough...
So it won't actually help against intruders when you leave your car parked somewhere...
How much did you pay for yours? Is R1400 a good price then?

I had both my vehicles done with 100micron S&G. That is the difference - normal tint, much thinner. To qualify for anti-S&G - it is usually thicker than 100micron. Norm is about 130micron for S&G. A fair price is between R1300 and R2000, depending on size of vehicle. And no, they do not do the windscreen. The 130micron can withstand a hit with a baseball bat - window breaks, but sags with plinters still clinging to the film - very difficult to get full access. I think it is worth it.

No.
Don't waste money on the more expensive "smash and grab" film. Either fit normal film which does the same job as far as I can see in over 12 years of using film. (lets face it the window, if cracked or broken will need to be replaced regardless of film used) or fit bulletproof glass which is not a realistic option (and besides you get a distorted view too)

i have tinting on my car and not the cheap film either but expensive anti smash and grab too.
it does not make your car impenetrable but what it does give you in the event of a smash and grab (if the theif is a moron and tries) is time. with no film the window is broken and the dude is in your car, with film he has to smash again and maybe a third time which hopefully gives you time to go.
I got the darkest tint available because it keeps your car cooler (my car is black) and i think offers a great deal of privacy at night when any would be theif is unsure how many peeps are in your car.
Some points to note is that cleaning your windows from the inside you should do with caution, as normal cleaning materials will scratch the film so you should take care when cleaning the inside windows.
And no they dont do the front windscreen.
takes about an hour to fit and i highly recommend you use a professional company that a) offer a guarentee on their work b) know what they doing, or else you gonna get them typical 3rd rate tints you see on some taxi's with bubbles ect.

I'm thinking about going the window tinting route,
Its not so much the need for protection against hijacking, but more for looks.
I like it during the day the dark windows, but night time it just junk to look out.
Im trying to get a balance, what % should I go with?
I think 50% is the lightest (can't almost see the tint)
35 % legal limit
20 % Dark
5% black Illegal.
is there something like a 40% maybe, which is still a bit dark in the day, but not too dark in night time

My gf got some s&g film for around R900. Her friends coworker had the same stuff from the same place and they tried to break into his car through the window and eventually had to use a crowbar to try and pry the window out, so the door is damaged etc but the window was basically still in place. I have the s&g specially organised by the stealership at R2.5k...

I had this film fitted to my Wife's car (Now ex.) It costs about 4k, but it is "bullet proof" , the website cliams it will stop 9mm, .45 .38 bullets fired from 5 m.
I actually watched a test on video done by SAPS, and it did. !! Not involved with the product at all, so please dont flame the messanger. The website is http://www.defcon1.co.za

Just be aware of some fitment centers using very thin materials. Ask beforehand what thickness they use in comparison to the more expensive outlets.

The film is measured in percentage of light let through, so stick to 50% would be my advice. The 35% is just dark enough to annoy me personally at night - I find my eyes need a moment to adjust when checking mirrors/glancing to the side & I don't like it...
