For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides... When your screen is white, being it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. So a man named Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.
In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

That page isn't a Google initiative, though it does have a similar look. Couple of styles changed. It's marked as Heap Media...

I am not even sure what to make of that comment.
Who said anyone one entity is going to save power? They are talking about a global saving which will reduce emissions and conserve natural resources.

HeHeHe... Wikipedia is ur friend
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackle.com
Blackle is a search engine search engine developed by Heap Media Australia [1], which is supposedly energy-saving. This is only partly true. CRT displays use less energy when displaying black, as the black pixels are not lit. However, an LCD display uses the same energy regardless of pixel colour due to the fact that the backlighting lamp is always on. It uses the Google search engine, from which the company derives its income.
Contrary to popular beliefs, it is not an alternative developed by or affiliated with Google at all.
So what u say about this???

This seems more like a rugby union thing - maybe I should register www.whitele.com and promote the Jakes White Book on both blackle and whitele .com

Cos your monitor uses more electricity when the background is white!

Err... This was on Slashdot.
Apparently this is only true for CRT monitors. If you have an LCD, it will actually use MORE electricity to show a black background.

Roughly...
In a CRT the electron guns for each of the three colours are at there full intensity ( or power) when the colour white is being shown.
With a LCD the backlight is always on, and the signals "twist" the liquid crystals. This requires power. I have forgotten if desktop LCDs are in a normally clear or normally blank state, however if they are in a normally clear state it stands to reason that all the pixels will have to have to be driven fully on if that were the case. And this would indeed use more power. Like I said I forget exactly which way around it is and I don't have international to check it out.
The whole Blackle thing is rather old and its like somebodies attempt at a publicity stunt or something and I don't think the scientific facts were thouroughly examined first.

Google to your hearts content by using blackle, and save a bit of wattage, apparently.
www.blackle.com
How is Blackle saving energy?
Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.
