Two weeks ago, I saw on TV that the minister of home affairs said that a ID doc. takes 90 days and will improve to 60 days in the near future. My daughter has been waiting 9 months for hers. My wife's took 12 months.
Where do I complain to? My daughter wants to go to the UK asap.

Sounds like Telkom and their 30 days ADSL installation time.

Complaining doesn't help, this is South Africa - everything is screwed.

Past pathetic if you ask me - everyone wants the job, but nobody can do it properly.

Applied for one in 99, lost mine in a move to PTA, (sorry Tshwane??)

Missed elections cos of this, reapplied 3 times. Still have not received it. (are we really on 08??)

Luckily found my original on a holiday home in 01.

So, I guess I get the longest wait for the non appearance of an ID that was paid for??

home affairs has an SMS thingy that you send your id number to (34451?) anyways it is on the site and it works great.

send ID to that number for ID book,
P + ID Number for passport
and M+IDNumber for marriage status.

Apparently sometimes you have to re apply cause they lose the application and they don't tell you this, had a friend that waited 2-3 years

There are quite regularly reports on www.iol.co.za where the newspaper contacted a hotshot at home affairs to get things sorted.

Do you need an ID book to go to the UK? Don't you just need a passport?

Have you used http://www.dha.gov.za/enquiry/id/status/track_status.asp and what does it say about your application?

Gave mine in on 20 March and got a sms that I can collect it on 14 May. There is a Track & Trace, where the application is entered and then tracked during its life and you should get a SMS soon after giving it in, and then another one on when to come collect it.

Come to think of it: Track and trace is quite new for Home Affairs - most probably less than a year.

It might be worth the while to re-apply just to get onto the latest system - and follow up if you don't get the SMS within a few days that your application has be received.

Well there was all kinds of nonsense with to many different couriers and what not in the past, thats now been limited to one nationwide courier that takes the IDs and applications around. So it should improve.

The turnaround team have decreased the backlog in BVR (bevolkings register or NPR in english) and streamlining and cutting unnecessary processes out of the line. The workflow goes much more smoothly now with regards to the ID processing.

All these things mentioned are less than a year old, so it doesn't help to bring out the old stuff, but people are working on doing it better and faster.

Applied in January, got it in March. Use the Dep. of Home Affairs tracking facility on their website, it's fantastic. I found out my ID was ready before the company I organized it through did. Another benefit of the tracking tool is that it tells you if your ID application has been cancelled or rejected due to inaccurate data or smudged finger prints, as the DHA doesn't actually ever attempt to inform you of this.

Do you have the URL for that tracking - I've tried here: http://www.dha.gov.za/enquiry/pass%5Cstatus%5Cpass_status.asp and it never works.

Website has never worked for me. Perhaps it only works in IE and not FireFox.
I know she can't use her ID to go to the UK but she does need it to get a passport !!
