View Full Version : Will Telkom and iBurst come up with unlimited bandwidth offerings?

Neotel's product rollout did not deliver what many hoped - at least 50% cuts in monthly telecoms costs for Joe Soap.

Also the instrument they provide seems primitive - no ethernet/PPoE capabilities and not being able to handle voice and data at the same time.

The compulsory 24-month tie-up to an untried service is also not acceptable.

Combined with the extremely limited geographical availability, the initial reaction was not to happy.

However, an aspect that has been overlooked:

Neotel set the upper limit of montly internet access costs for home use at R999.

Few people, if any, would need faster internet connectivity than Neotel promises.

It would be interesting what stunts Telkom is going to pull to counter this offer.

If Neotel had an ethernet unit, and had coverage at my SMME office, I would have seriously considered dropping ADSL in favour of Neotel. The savings on bandwidth cost would be minimal - not worth the trouble. But the savings of not having the manage bandwidth and buy additional as required would have made the deal work.

The question is: Will Telkom (and iBurst for that matter) come up with unlimited bandwidth packages?

I doubt it. Although I do think they will increase our caps in august free of charge. Wishful thinking maybe but any increase would help.

Perhaps Maybe, Unlimited Bandwith = No Money Left !

Well, at the very least this might prompt Telkom to have something like an "unlimited dailup" connection for a set monthly fee. This would be more than enough for most of the people that only check e-mail and browse occasionally, as well as for businesses that might need to be connected 24/7 but don't need speed. Having the speed max out at normal dail-up speeds shouldn't put that much extra strain on the network.

I would also not surprise me if Neotel impose a cap on the R999 package when they have more coverage than they do now. I reckon it was a publicity stunt. Once they have more coverage they will have to impose an upper usage limit...

Telkom is very much aware of Neotel's limitations at present.

I don't think Telkom or any other provider will react until there's enough reason too - Until Neotel signs up enough customers to the point that Telkom starts to take notice - nothing will happen... If Telkom doesnt lower prices, i doubt the cellular giants will, unless they start getting their bandwidth from Neotel!

P.S. Btw - are there any Neotel Adds out on Radio & TV ?

iBurst doesn't offer services anywhere near me, so I've never looked at the packages they have.

I've played WoW - including 40 man raiding - and now AoC quite happily on iburst, even when throttled to 64kbs after blowing my cap, so I imagine that 156kbs should manage quite well for MMO games at least. I wouldn't recommend it for fast twitch stuff like FPS games though

In terms of iCrap, I would venture to say no and if they did, it certainly would not be cheap and they would in all probability charge you an arm and a leg to migrate to it.

I doubt that any provider in the world would be able to provide unlimited bandwidth.

Bandwidth (in networking) is the data rate through the pipe. Nobody offers ∞ mb/s.

They do. I already said that.

Why do people post without reading the thread?
