So I rush over and get my NeoConnect Prime phone with the Unlimited package.
Get it setup in my office, making voice calls great no problem. Now to get the data side setup.. run the installation.. idiot proof with any advanced options removed.
Chage the default username and password... click connect.... Error 691 Invalid username and password !!!
Call the help desk.. get a very friendly techie but takes me through the motions in baby steps.. checking the user and pass settings about 5 times... no luck
So I now really wanna get testing but cant due to a login fault... !!!!!
Hurry up Neotel !!! :D:mad::
Anybody else have a similar problem ?

After running through my setting five times and talking to me like a 90 year old granny he confirmed that I had a problem. They basically have 3 default passwords: 1234 / neotel and letoen. he made me try each of those which obviously none worked.
He ended the conversation by telling me that it would be escalated to the advanced calldesk. I then promptly received an email stating that my fault is being attended to.. thats it...
Now I wait and look at this ugly phone. cos thats all that it is right now...

This isn't anything new. I have heard about things like when people just sign up for ADSL accounts on Webafrica or Openweb. It seems sometimes your new username and password just don't work.
good luck. hope it gets sorted.

How long it took for them to process the application over the phone and delivered the device to you?
The application process was fairly efficient. I called the call centre, they did a credit check, took my details and confirmed that the device would be couriered to me within 48 hours. Upon delivery of the deivce, I was to sign the contract.
I then happened to be in a Postnet store (Chilli Lane, Sunninghill JHB to be exact) and saw that they were selling the devices and contracts.
I then attempted to go ahead and sign up there thinking I would be able to walk out the store with my device and contract setup.
However that was just a dream, they are required to comply with some FICA laws and with that comes a requirement for 3 months bank statements which I had to go home and find...
So all in all a frustrating process but eventually sorted..
Still waiting for their advanced call centre to resolve my login info though...

It looks like downloads seeing as he took the time to capitalize the B.
For a multithreaded download it seems believable.

Can you confirm whether there is coverage in the Sunninghill area then, I was told be the normal help desk that the coverage is bad, but maybe I should get a second opinion from the advanced Help desk LOL.

nk1, NeoTel's offices are in Sunninghill, so one would imagine that their coverage there would be at least half decent. But then again...

Go to Postnet in woodmead(way more helpfull than sunninghill), they will check on a map that actually shows where there is signal, it all depends on where in sunninghill you are.

Could you please do a quick tracert (from command prompt) or just ping to a few local and international sites. It would help us a lot with checking their latencies. :)

Ok, so finally I am up and running. turns out to be a mess up on their side " My service wasn't provisioned correctly"
So I am finally up and running.
nk1 to answer you, yes there is actually bloody good signal strength in Sunninghill. I was running around like a kid in a candy store testing my phone out. I made a perfect call from Chilli Lane, from builders warehouse, Linksfield Bedfordview and Kensington. Its almost like a cellphone.
I am away for the weekend but will get to doing some testing on Monday and a traceroute etc.
In terms of setup the device isnt quite 100% practical. I can't think of its application, even if I use it in a home environment, I would only be able to have one user connected ???
So they had better hurry up and get some more products out, ideally a combined router with ethernet output

Okay that's good news - I'm not to far off from Builders Warehouse, so I might be in luck - now to just decide between the packages - have to still keep a 3G prepaid to get the PS3 to connect however -unless if somebody has found a way to share the connection.

Got my Prime Unlimited from Postnet in Chillylane on Friday as well. Download speed at 150kBps. Planned to use it at work, but took my device home (Boksburg), and i've seen pretty good coverage 4/5 bars all the way from Sunninghill to boksburg on the N3 south and along the N17. Signal varies from no signal bar to 1 bar at home.Pretty crappy for downloads, but can make perfectly clear calls. Does anyone know if there is an external earial (poynting etc.) available to boost my signal at home ?

what frequency does this work on? if its 2.4 do they use one frequency per coverage area or do they use the big 3 to cover an area?
that way i can get 3 of these. faster than a 4mb and uncapped!

their site is down now so I cant double check.. I seem to remember the lite unlimited being shaped to about a third of the prime's speed, but not sure. If so, does that mean unlimited dl at 50KBps for under R500 a month? Thats about the same I get on 3G(except local dl's like ubuntu updates ect.) A pretty sweet deal me thinks!!

It is not shaped by the way. They use a different revision of CDMA that runs at that lower speed. ;)
You could go for the NeoConnect Prime Unlimited for R999 - 2.4Mbps pure uncapped goodness! :D
I'm actually thinking of getting the NeoConnect Lite unlimited package. Can live with 20kb/s download speeds. R469 for unshaped/uncapped/unlimited download/upload sure beats my ADSL R600 capped/shaped/limited(6gb cap) download/upload.
What do you guys think though?
I'm in an area that Neotel classifies as Excellent, I'm pretty much in the middle of the large coverage area and can infact get the max speed during off peak hours.
Did get some info from NeoTel phone support, but would like some opinions on this.
R999 is a bit much for me and I'm not all that concerned on really high speeds. So 20kb/s +- is fine by me.

THAT would make more sense, but either way its going to go through USB so if you're a gamer you're going to experience latencies higher than normal lan

Plug one end into the neotels device and the other end into a router/hub/switch then it can be shared.
Ether way there are a few devices that may work. Well then u must not be a gamer lag... well until neotel has a beter device what u going to do? if u want to share the connection.
rtzouves
05-08-2008, 05:50 PM
The high latency problem does not come from the fact that the device connects via USB, but rather because the modem itself uses a wireless connection. The difference between a "USB LAN" and a normal RJ45 LAN would be negligible if anything at all in terms of latency.
However if memory servers correctly, in terms of bandwidth, a 100mbps lan would actually be slower than a "USB LAN" as USB has a theoretical max of 480mbps.
The point i am making is that it will be irrelevant what type cable the modem uses to connect to your computer as it is still using a wireless connection to connect to the exchange.

There are some places I know of that sells them. Not exactly rare things. Although I would like to point out one thing...It won't work. Not imo at least.
So you plug the USB cable from the neotel router into the one side and then plug the RJ45 side into the router? Nothing wrong with that except that the router will not be able to "talk" to the modem, because I don't see a way to install the drivers on the router. Remember the router Expects TCP/IP traffic and not RJ45 adapted USB traffic.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/MY-Link-RJ45-Ethernet-network-adapter/dp/B000MMVANM/ref=pd_sbs_ce_5/026-3778618-7306031

Actually no. How would that work? Network cable from the router in the one side and then you plug the USB side into the neotel modem? How are you going to install the drivers on the router?
You need USB support from the Router side or RJ45 support from the modem side unfortunately. :(

Help, I am having the same problem, "error 691, invalid username and password". I called the service centre, they taught me how to create a new connection step by step:confused:. it doesn't seem to help, then I called them again, they gave a reference number, and say they will reply me in 48 hours , I am really frustrated about this.
