View Full Version : People with Neotel: What speeds are you getting?

Whats the fastest speed you downloaded? With a Download manger etc.

cozinsky
02-06-2008, 03:51 PM
I have the fastest uncapped option available that retails for about R1000 a month. The download speeds I get varies between 100 en 200Kbps, with 150KBps the average. As this is on uncapped option, I can download quite a bit of data with these speeds. The only problem I have, is a constant dropping of the line, after 3 hours or so. I phoned Neotel and they will come back to me, after "testing my system". I will post their reply here, once I get it.

KB/s, he was talking about actual download speeds.

I'd be pretty sure of that from the few other replies we've had so far.

Lets say an avereage monthly income in SA is R4000. Do you think its a good deal to pay 1/4 of your income for internet. Internet should not be a luxury. For crying out loud people wake up.

It's a good deal if you can afford to spend R1000 every month on Internet, but it's still one big monthly fee for the average Joe.

Well that does work out to 400GB+ a month...I guess even that is not bad for R999.

Now for some cheaper offerings, Neotel. And they need to be fast and have decent caps, too. And coverage in CT ;)

That's the full theoretical speed of 4mb, no one can even get that on Telkom's lines. They have said the max is limited to around 3.6mbps, did you really download that much?

In any case your leeching speed really isn't the point in SA, it's the cap.

it will obviously drop, but not to the same extent we have experienced so far with wireless in this country, purely because neotel has the massive advantage of running off their own fiber.

It will be nothing for them to keep ahead of the demand unlike vodacom or the like who have had to try keep things goign with 1.5 meg telkom lines.

Adsl at that speed would cost you R180 (international) an hour to run. Neotels offer on the other hand cost about a rand(international) an hour at full speed, if u work out how much u can download in a month.

Seems like good deal to me.

Wonder if speeds like that would be possible on a torrent program.

In fairness to them they have said they are soft launching for the moment. The idea being to get all the kinks out of the system. So yes there are kinks, but this is fully inline expectations. In a few month they wont have the luxury of this and we can then all expect them to offer better service.

When we many neotel ads on tv, them we can consider them fully "launched".

Time will tell, but in the meantime i remain positive.

Firstly not many South African can afford internet, and internet is not a luxury.. The pure fact that it cost a lot of money to maintain routers, pay staff, various other things... We are not in Europe, where internet cost around R500 a month for uncap 10 meg ... Please do me a favor and go live in Europe for a while, you'll see the cost of living is expensive.

also, the avg south african dont 'need' uncapped internet? uncapped internet is a luxury, you dont NEED to download loads of pirate videos or whatever....

u can get a decent 1gig adsl connection for around R300. thats less than 1/8 of the R4000, and do u think the person who earns R4000 can afford the computer? why not complain about that also? and about car prices? and house prices? stop complaining, adsl prices come down, or stay same, everything else is going up. now u moan about freakin adsl. get real

hello all

so what
are they giving us these ****ty choices in our own best interest?
they care for us so much that they do want us to "abuse " the internet?

irrespective of what we do with it- a decent speed/cap connection should NOT cost a quarter (or thereabouts) of the average monhly salary of people in a country- esp when you consider what it actually costs these companies to provide the services they offer.

thanks

And who decides how much a person needs? What methodology was used in calculating bandwidth caps? How would one tell how much a person needs if uncapped is not offered first, and the average usage taken over a few months?

Hi Cozinsky

what is your upload speed looking like? Have you done some tests with www.speedtest.net ? Any links to the results that we can look at. I'm looking to go over to them but the upload speed is very important to me. Would love to get some feedback from users in the field.

Another thread in the Neotel forum says they only have 600 subscribers - do keep that in mind when doing speed tests - 600 customers is hardly going to show contention rates going forward.

Would be a bit like timing the traveling route to a new job at 2am on a Sunday morning.

I haven't got any links as such for upload speeds, but i can tell you that it ranges from 50 Kbps to about 150Kbps, and when i say ranges i mean it honestly is that inconsistant as the speed bouces like a mexican jelly bean on roids. The average is closer to about 80Kbps so in my opinion the speeds are horrific with regards to uploads, steer clear of neotel if you need decent upload speeds.

Hi

Finally got my Neotel device. These are the results of the speed test to thinkbroadband.com

Speed Test Results
Date: 30/06/08 18:21:16
Speed Down: 282.30 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Speed Up: 62.21 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )
Server speedtest2.adslguide.org.uk

Results from Speedtest.net
http://www.speedtest.net/result/290321379.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Results aren't great and a definite step down from the comfort of 4Mbps - but at least it's comparatively cheaper for 10GB's of usage.

Looks like I will be back to those good old days of waiting for things to finish downloading...

Hey B2048

Try moving your modem and arial around a bit and see if this improves your speeds, for some reason my modem works best at a specific spot in the room with it slightly tilted. I know thissounds odd, but it works like a dream for me and can sometimes mean the difference between 600Kbps and 1000Kbps AVERAGE speeds for me.

It not my imagination as i have run many a speed test in different places multiple times, always with similar results for the same area/position and i know it is not any device in my home that could be effecting it, although it may be another neighbours'.

Hope you get better speeds :)

I completely agree with you... we don't have a reliable energy grid... No decent 'professional' road/rail based public transportation, and only ONE satellite provider, and the one in question is only NOW launching a digital service...

We have a long way to go before we can start comparing ourselves to other countries and their Internet...

There was a news story on MyBB not that long ago which said they were only just beginning to roll out WiMax to enterprise customers, and that consumers would follow that implementation.

If that's true how soon could the consumer be getting it? I think it will be a while yet. (Though I hope I'm wrong)

I think this was the article I'm reffering to:
http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Wireless/4441.html

There's also this new one, which makes it look better for us (getting it quicker):
http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Wireless/4459.html

How many kilo bits per second is the user that's doing 40GB month getting? Last post of a speed test is much more modest than that I'm sure, getting 200kbps or something.

So what's the average, if there could be said to be one, for the 2.4Mbps and the 154Kbps (or whatever it is) respectively?

You should only be getting about 39KBps on a 384Kbps line, you're making the most common mistake with bandwidth speeds.

The 384 line is 384 Kilo bits per second (Kbps), your download apps will report speeds in Kilo Bytes per second (KBps).

Kilo Bytes = Kilo bits / 8

384 / 8 = 48

You seldom reach the max speed of the line, I get about 39KBps on my 384Kbps line as well.

4000/8 = 500 KB/s not 50.

So getting 400 KB/s is quite normal since you won't get the max speed of the connection.

Man I would so love a 2mb fiber connection but at R26k installation cost from Neotel and then R5900 montly rental just for the line without any cap :-/ and then u have 2 buy international bw in 64k pieces, sigh....

I long for the day when a person wouldn't need a complex Linux Firewall running multiple IPCop VM's to split your local and international and to try and get a couple of extra connections from the local news servers. It would b so great sharing a internet connection off a little router lying in the corner not having to worry about how long ur cap will last this month.

Anyway I was rather interested in the Neo Connect Uncapped Package but with signal problems and high latencies its sounding more like a Sentech / iBurst exercise.
