Has anyone here used magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com/)? It certainly looks prettier than osCommerce, ZenCart etc.
Any comments/observations etc?
yes, it is very nice, just try and get a payment gateway developed for SA.
I have one under development, and no you cant have it cus it is costing me a fortune.:D
and this is what my professional development company says.
Hi,
We've been looking at the structure of Magento and are seriously considering returning your payment.
Magento may look nice on the outsite but it is a real mess on the inside.
They break up a simple payment gateway into 30+ files.
It is taking a huge amount of effort to research it.
Perhaps you would be better getting the magento people to develop this for you.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Magento can be summed up in one word, AWESOME !
We at Buyxonline.com (http://www.buyxonline.com) have done much work on osCommerce (http://www.oscommerce.org), and have taken it as far as we could, but if your serious about your eCommerce store, there is no way of getting around this, you have to migrate to Magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com)
If you'd like to see the possibilities, checkout !
KTM Cape Town (http://www.ktmcapetown.co.za)
Buyxonline.com (http://www.buyxonline.com)
It's daunting at first, but it's a developers dream, built on the Zend Framework, PHP5, MySQL5 using an EAV Database scheme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity-attribute-value_model) - know the facts :)
Peace !

Magento is a resource hog, and is not suited to a shared hosting environment.

I tried it a few times. Couldn't even manage to change the layout or basic things. Looks like the Oracle of eCommerce products. Great if you understand it, but nightmare it you want to learn it.

Have to disagree with you here :/ Magento is not a resource hog at all, having managed a couple of stores already. Then again, I manage my own servers, being a systems admin by trade, you have to know what your doing when it comes to optimizing the LAMP stack.
That said, some shared hosting companies are better than others, I think it's a question of you get what you pay for.

Yeah Texo - you must be hosting your site in the wrong place :P
You're right. I wish I knew more about this shared hosting stuff. :)

I love Magento. Yes it has a steep learning curve but its brilliant.
Seems to have offices in SA and UK. Payment gateway on their site.
