I won't linger on the car industry, but the topic made headlines in the Sunday Times today.

The Telkom issue is just as important to South Africa.

This forum is young and while we have a large number of valid issues which make Telkom look like thieves - which they are - I believe it is time to consolidate and take ourselves to a new level.

Peapod, made an excellent contribution some time ago and presented an outline of all the issues, but then she got involved in "convergence" and we are waiting for something important from her.

I suggest that we contact Peapod to find out if we should wait any longer for her input.

The Telkom story is huge and will make headlines shortly

We will need to be ready for a massive increase in membership next year and might have to make changes to the way the forum is presented.

I have some ideas, but wanted to sound out all before jumping the gun.

On page 4 of the Business Times section of today's Sunday Times, there is an article called 'Telkom putting a brake on the economy...', and a response from Telkom.

Here are links to the articles online:

Interesting reading

Who is this person? and why, 10 years down the road, do we still get the old argument of:

".... under the apartheid government".

As for:

"A comparison of Telkom's key tariffs with those of telecoms companies operating in similar economic environments is ample proof that Telkom' s prices are not creating primary roadblocks to the development of an information society."

When will telkom tell us who they compare themselves too?
We keep getting the same argument with no figures to back it up.

And surely these two statements are mutualy exclusive:

"The north-south economic divide is the cause of what is perceived as South Africa's high prices for international services and network capacity for Internet services."

"With regard to Melody's remarks that "Telkom's profits are outrageous", it needs to be said that the laudable financial performance is not primarily driven by tariffs, but rather more significantly by increased operational efficiencies (driving unnecessary costs out of the business), reduced debtor days, improved debt to equity ratio, the favourable rand dollar exchange rate, strategic management and leadership."

but my favorite comment has to be:

"Customers initiate about 40% of all disconnections. The reasons they provide include the following:

Physical relocation; and Death."

Can you imagine calling the help desk and saying:

"Please disconect me, according to my contract I have to give you 60 days notice of my impending demise" [:(]

Cheers
Chris

I agree - he's an idiot. It's too easy to blame everything on the past when you cannot make a convincing argument for your case. Blame it all on the previous govt - and of course anyone who then disagrees with you is automatically a right wing radical racist...
