Hi,
I am looking forward to another player in the 24/7 connectivity market in SA.
But I believe there will be a lot of initial disappointment because too much was expecte - and largely not due to Sentech overselling, but because of the general rumours creating exitement.
Those who can still remember when cellphones were new: Initially coverage was very restricted - quite often posh suburbs had shaky reception. I remember people laughing because their buddies were so serious about this new technology that the ran out in the street an up the hill to get better reception :-)
This is long ago.
Initially Vodacom an MTN did not compete on price at all. Prices were similar - as they are still today on paper. After a while "special offers" were introduced and they got beter and better with time. After the introduction of Cell C, prices did not drop immediately. The specials are just getting better.
I'm sure MyWireless will follow a roll-out similar to cellphones. 24/7 connectivity pricing will not change at all until the market is almost saturated at the available rates. Then only a price war might start.
The irony is that Telkom can easily dent Sentechs's offer badly by offering a product for unlimited calls to your ISP at R150 pm. It will reduce the market for any other "fixed montly cost" internet connectivity product substantially.
South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.
