Hehe, I'll wait and see what the new one costs after a few months on the market. BTW, the 40D is now only a few bucks more than the 450D. Saw it for £520 retail over the weekend :eek:

Skimming over the D700 specs, I notice it can go up to 8fps. If you feel like some Gerry Springer/Ricky Lake style fighting with a photography spin, go read the 1D / 1Ds / 5D Forum (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1032) on dpreview. Guys are bitter...

it will be a great camera
it's a d300 with awesome lowlight and the ability to use all Nikon lenses
plus it's $2000 less than the D3 (same chip)
if i was a wedding photographer i would get this

Hehe, true. I wouldn't want it anyway, I have little use for such a lens - for the one out of several hundred shots over 105mm that I take, my lowly Sigma 70-300 is perfectly fine. I'm having way more fun with my 10-20mm anway :D

then you can use your 70-200
the 5D still has better technical image quality (except, lowlight)

reasons to get a D700:
ergonomics
functionality
faster camera
better LCD
better lowlight (5D, not bad at lowlight ;))


reasons to get a 5D:
sharper picture
cheaper ($1900 vs $3000)
use your existing Canon lenses

5D + that lens of yours = ****ing sharp

Then I'm sorted - the 24-105L f/4 does portraits pretty nicely too. I find most of the portrait type shots I've done are at the shorter end of that lens. I'm really liking the 35mm f/2 for that too, especially indoors.

For what it's worth, they have an excellent reputation, so I would easily buy from them if they had the good deal for me.

That is pretty darn good. I just looked at their prices for the 450D. It's gonna cost around R6900 if I buy from them. If I buy here, it's gonna cost R9000.

Just to be clear, they told me that they would charge my dad on delivery for tax and customs, but they didn't. So the package was either too cheap (it wasn't exactly a D700) or they were just being nice (or forgetful). So factor being charged for vat and duties in your calculations. Should still be cheaper though.

Call them and ask, they ended up being so expensive I bought my alpha locally, I called them on Monday, worked out too expensive on the camera however on lenses and accessories it will be cheaper over there

Do yourself a favour and DONT use UPS - they charge a brokerage fee and, from what I found you will pay duties even if the item is duty free.

I usually use International Express Mail with bhphoto, takes about 2 weeks - but I haven't had any problems with delivery or nasty duty surprises (only VAT and like a R100 clearance fee). As far as I'm aware (and from personal experience) - import duties on cameras and lenses have been dropped.
