Hi,

My Linux short story: :D

I first dabbled in alternate OSes with FreeBSD a number of years ago. I then tried a couple of versions of SUSE Linux, even 10.2 fairly recently. My main issue was internet access, not a problem before with dialup, and even ISDN via a network. But the fun started when I got a 3G Modem, could never get it working in SUSE, checked the forums, followed the steps, downloaded dependencies (via XP), but still couldn't get it working. So Linux sat on the back-burner for awhile.

Then, our friendly IT Manager gave me a copy of Ubuntu 8.04 UE, I delayed installing as I wasn't in the mood to fight with my 3G modem. I then eventually installed it at work, and was immediately converted. Picked up our network immediately, and after changing the proxy settings locally, had internet up and running. Had fun with CUPS and the network printer I use, but that worked flawlessly after d/l the .PPD for it from linuxprinting.org. Again after much searching and forum browsing.

So I decided to install it at home, with the first priority being to get the 3G Modem working. Downloaded the latest driver from Betavine, and then proceeded to fight with Ubuntu about being (or not) root in order to run the install package. Again, after the usual searching and forum browsing, did the sudo thing (doh!) :o, and it installed fine, detected the modem, and connected. Yay!.

The next thing was to get the OpenGL/3D working correctly, for my 7600 GT Gfx Card. Downloaded and installed the latest driver from Nvidia, and it worked. And, I could now play EVE Online in Linux. Yay yay!. There are still some settings to configure there, but otherwise all is well.

I plan on giving a visual display of a centre appendage to XP eventually, probably still a few months off.
