My Defy under counter oven has just packed up ( 600 s (http://www.defy.co.za/product.asp?pageId=1&cateId=10&subcateId=3&prodId=160) )
I have taken it to pieces and cant seem to find any fuses??? do these new ovens still use fuses???
Could it be the element or thermostat. How do i test these?
I always thought i was not technicaly challenged......but i'[m starting to feel a little stupid...
Do any of you guys know anything about these under counter type ovens??

It's built in, you should be able to pull it out slightly. The fuses are on top or the oven itself.

1 - Check the Distribution box .. the stove is supposed ot have it's own circuit breaker.
2 - Does the oven light go on, (or is it borked like mine, ) cos if it does, you can skip point 1 above.
Usually one of the elements dies.
Either the top one or the bottom one.
Not usually both though.
If you put it on grill does it still grill?
If you put it on bake, does the bottom one get warm?

Its a thermofan oven so there is no bottom element. So i cant test them. If i switch it on its dead, not even the fan turns???

If the fuses are not on top, that model doesn't have fuses. The oven will be connected to the plates and the plates connected to the isolator... or something like that he says.
Pull the oven out completely. Follow the wires to see if they go to the plates. If it does check the fuses on the plates. If that is fine, check the wires connected to the plates one of them might have burnt off. He's saying he suspecting the earth wire is off at the connection between the plates and the oven.
Or something like that :D

You have to use a voltmeter/ammeter or something similar.
But .. if the fan does not run then you can safely eliminate a blown element as the problem.

The knob will have 2 switches in it, one that powers the fan and lights when the knob is not in the off position, and one that is the reostat.
Hey .. there's always an independent switch (apart from the circuit board's switch) near the oven that can be turned off to turn the oven off.
HAVE YOU FOUND IT?

Why does it sound like Pitbull and yourself are talking about different "on top"s?
There should be no dials on top of an undercounter oven - it is after all always under the counter, and built in. Normally behind the door are a few fixing screws, get those out, then slide the oven out of the cupboard its built into. Then look at the top.

i only have one switch on the wall which isolates the stove and oven.....it's the same setup as pitbull described.

Is it a built in eye high oven ?

If that's the case, there will be fuses if you lift up the plates part, there will be 4 fuses for the plates and one or two for the oven. Check if they are fine.
If they are, a wire is off between the plates and the stove.
That is if I have listened correctly :D

Nope its a under counter type, under the hob. I'm busy taking it full out now to check everything.

according to the pic in the link, the dials are on the top of the face of the oven. You are obviosuly referring to the top of the oven once its pulled out? (ie the horizontal flat surface above the oven)
*damn thats difficult to explain.

Thanks Pitbull, but my afrikaans is not the best, i will try buzz one of my mates.
I cant believe an oven has got me stumped.

Sure, np. Just shout if you need his number. He'll just try and help over the phone obviously. But he also said that only Electricians should work on the oven if there is some wiring issues. best is to get someone to test the wires and so forth for you. Hope it's a fuse cos then it's easy :D
He said you can lift the plates section from the table it's build into. Just use something sharp to get in underneath it and lift it. He says it should also have a stand kind of thing like a car bonnet does :D

All the wires are perfect, not one fuse to be found. It must be the thermostat. How do i check that????

lol
Ok he says you now have 2 choices.
It's not the thermostat, if it was it will get hot but will not be able to regulate the temp. You need to take out the oven (He says you need 2 people as it's k@k heavy. Once done, unscrew the back plate. Then check if those wires are fine. If they are, get an Electrician to come have a look.
Sorry that's all his got. Says it's hard to guess unless he has a look at it himself

@caspa: In the past when I have had problems repairing my Defy washing machine I usually just call up their service department and ask for advice. If you tell them the model of the stove as well as the exact problem they can normally tell you immediately where to look. When I had a problem removing the drum bearing I took the assembly in and they replaced it for me for a nominal charge. If it's a simple problem like a fuse or a thermostat they should be able to save you a lot of unnecessary trouble. They can also usually give you very good instructions on how to disassemble some areas before you damage something! You are probably going to need to visit them to get new spares in any case.
Is the oven light working? Have you checked all the trip switches on the house electricity panel. Is mains power coming through to the stove wiring? You should be able to test the elements or the thermostat using a voltmeter set to test resistance just make very sure that the mains power is OFF.

@Yotch...
Thanks, I have checked all the switches, and i have power coming to the stove as the plates are working perfectly.
I've got a funny feeling its the element, i will resume my testing in the morning....or the next tool i use to fix it is gonna be a 4 pound hammer. :)

@caspa: In addition to Defy you could also try www.tecsa.co.za (Click Parts & Accessories -> Stoves & Cooker Hoods -> Elements) for a replacement element if that's of any interest.

It's not inside... it's on top...
Which reminds /me... our oven seems not to have any fuses or fuse holders as well... will worry about that when the time comes for fuse replacement.

I FIXED IT.......
One the back, top right hand corner there is a little magnetic swith fixed to the back of the oven. Dont know what the hell its for but it must get f'ing hot.....anyway armed with my multimeter i tested every wire and found the fault. Took the swicth apart and put it back together and wallah....it works.
Thanks Pitbull and Co for all the advise.....

I have found mybroadband has helped with some basic cell-phone issues I had, but I never expected to get an answer (and apparently the only answer online) as to how to fix a broken oven. Thanks caspa and all for dealing with this issue 3 years ago - you saved me a lot of time (and money)!
It was definitely the magnetic switch that was the problem, and dismantling (then finding the small parts) and reassembling fixed the oven (light and grill included.) Last time the oven worked, it managed to burn the food, so next time I'll monitor whether the thermostat works. I wonder, however, whether (somehow) the magnetic switch caused the burnt food too.
Thanks again

Our new Defy is rusting in the oven along the shelf grooves. Odd since that's the hottest and driest part!

1st search that popped up for me tonight :) Was cooking dinner, heard a pop from the oven, funny electrical burns smell and oven, fan and display stopped... it's a DEFY 731. Going to let it cool down and then tomorrow take the multi-meter (and possibly a hammer) to it :)
