Hi All,
Anybody tried www.host4africa.com?
R9.99 per month sounds a little to good to be true??[?]

Well not that surprising, but "host4<b>africa</b>" is infact located in the USA.
so the price is probably spot on.

No, didn't miss it.
I must say that I don't have any complaints yet. There speed is great and I always have fast replies if I have a support question.
They have given me a hell of a lot for next to nothing.
I don't hit my cap often and at R9.99 per month - I won't complain if I do. Why blame them for Telkoms crap?
I've had worse service from local guys like hetzner.
Karnaugh
14-03-2004, 09:24 PM
dude, its only 5 MB disk space. You really expect to pay more than R10 for that per month?
Agree 100% on the Hetzner thing though.

You cant slate host4africa for trying to attract customers who dont have a lot of money but need a hosting facility. Using international services is not a problem and I'm sure their speeds are decent. 5Megs is enough for a small website and their upgrade prices are affordable. On our reseller package we offer full featured hosting at R20+vat per new account a reseller adds to their account. There's a basic overhead fee. The question shouldnt be levelled at pricing. There is more to consider. Someone said you get what you pay for. Perhaps. You will possibly find that in the case of Host4Africa and RealXchange you are dealing with motivated teams of people who love what they do, and want to grow their businesses on the pillars of lower pricing, good support, reliable infrastructure. R9.99 is too low to offset the time it would take to create a new users account, register a domain etc, so I'm sure they're hoping most people go for the next package up. At RealXchange we've been through the excercise of pricing low, pricing high , and eventually settled on middle of the road. Price is not the point. Service is the point. Not sure if Host4Africa offer anything other than unix hosting, so maybe we'll sign them up as a windows reseller *grin*.

I would suggest you never try hosting with host4africa.
I moved my domain to them after seeing an ad about the R9.99 hosting.
What a big mistake.
I was charged R94 for the 1st month's hosting and a R100 penalty for not paying the R94.
When I tried to contact them I got no response. (e-mail: no reply, phone: subscriber is not available).
Anyone else had problems with them?

adri76 - Typical. The non-payers always bitch and moan! Pay your accounts and you won't be nailed.
I have had no problems with them (touch wood.) I accutally find their turnaround time on email great. (unlike vodacom)

I think hosting4africa @ R9.99 should be used more for Educational Purposes for us Novice Web People and use the experience to choose better hosting options. I believe we have that R10. per month to waste on trial and error stuff.

I've been with them for over a year - started off quite well, but I've ended up paying much more than I expected, and worse.
My recommendation (if you're a designer/webmaster who organizes hosting for several clients): they use Servage.net or a similair provider - use Servage direct.
From what I understand of how Servage and places like it work, Host4Africa gets bonuses for signing new websites, so the stuff you're paying for, they get for free (and I've ended up paying a small fortune).
Besides which, I think their billing system is objectionable - if there's a mess-up, they are unwilling/unable to rectify it, and it has a serious flaw - it sends out billing info to non-billing adresses. It's caused headaches for me - if there's a mess-up, their system will inform your clients about it, and leave you with some explaining to do.
And, a final beef (although I could go on), they do not bill from month-end to month-end, they do it from mid-month to mid-month, and don't inform you about it, which has caused migraines for me.
So my opinion is, don't use them - use who they use.

I assume by "mess-up" you mean bounced debit order? What mistake did they make that they won't fix?
I host with them and they don't send out invoices - I log in to view them.
Your post is full of holes.
I found this on their site: (http://www.host4africa.com/content.php?cid=3)
How do I pay for my hosting?
The charges applicable to your account will be deducted via debit order. The first debit order deduction will include a pro-rata fee (if applicable) one month's hosting fees and the domain name registration costs (if applicable).
When will the first payment be deducted?
The first debit order will be on or shortly after the 1st of the month following the month in which you subscribed. If our debit order system has been closed for the current month, the first deduction will be on or shortly after the 1st of the second month following the month in which you subscribed.
Do you send out invoices?
No. Invoices are available online, in the "» my account" section, to view/print/download.
How will I receive invoices of my account?
We do not send out invoices. Invoices are available online, in the "» my account" section, to view/print/download.
Why are you telling fibs?

If you want non-SA hosting, I would recommend www.godaddy.com
I pay $3.95 pm and I have 10GB disk space and 250GB traffic per month, among piles of other things ...
there will be many centuries until you see this kind of prices in SA!

Ho ho ho, sounds like Wallace is a Host4africa employee.
I have several minor problems with the way they operate (eg they do not follow standard business practices such as issuing invoices - customers actually have to pay to go online to collect invoices. Who's ever heard of that?)
But my major problem with them is fairly simple: when you sign up, you're asked for the domain owner's email address, and a billing email address. I had a problem with payment, and instead of sorting it out with me, their system sent notifications to all my clients.
That sucks, and is quite clearly a flaw in their system. When I queried it, instead of fixing it, they suggested that I put MY address as the domain owners, which is just plain illegal. They still haven't fixed it.
As a result, I lost at least one client, who was considering me for several other jobs too. So now I've lost thousands of Rands because of a minor mess-up over a few bucks, and a crummy computer system.
Is that clear, Wallace? Understand?

Is that clear, Wallace? Understand?
crystal clear - you are a bad payer and blame everybody except yourself.
I'm not a host4africa employee - but I am a happy client.
eg. co.za notifies all the email addresses linked to a domain name when there has been no payment and the domain is about to be suspended. Don't you think the domain owner has the right to know his site will be suspended?
Pay your bills and stop trying to tarnish legit peoples names. I would personally never uses a website designer / host that does not pay their bills.

Yes, I had a problem with paying my bill, it happens.
But their system turned a minor problem into a headache. I would much rather just have had the site suspended until payment was made (which was within a few days).
There's just no 2 ways about it, their system is seriously flawed, as you'll probably find out at some stage.
Anyway, that's my position, no use getting involved in some dumb argument with a spotty teenager.

I've been using host4africa for about 5 months (the R40 p/m option) and I've had zero problems with them... It's a great deal imho. ;)

The way Uniforum works is a flippin nightmare as well. I spoke to someone there about how they do updates, how they notify people and generally about how bad their whole system is. The bloke said that they were looking to implement a DirectNIC style system next year.

Have you had a look at AmpleHosting.co.za? R9 /mo for 10MB space - Obviously this is an entry hosting package - but it's a great price to start at.
Yea I have had endless issues with Host4Africa, unexplained downtime of emails in the past - blaming me and my ISP etc. In the process now of transferring and wanting to leave these useless guys, they are giving me endless hassles in doing so. The numbers they registered under admin - belongs to people that dont even work at the company. Which means they give false numbers out, which is a security risk to the owners of those numbers. Now I want to leave this company, and that is harder than establishing a business!
If anyone has a contact number for this company (assuming they actually can afford a telephone?) since they refuse to give out their telephone number to me when I want to phone them to tell them I want to LEAVE!
Its not only the non payers that have issues, I have paid my account every month no questions asked, on debit order, and I still have issues with them.
If anyone has a number, please do give it to me.
So in the defense of Wallace who promotes this company as if they are the best hosting company - they are the worst, and I have enough evidence to back that up.
