Think KK lack of experience in Europe is showing.
Showing too much respect to the opposition.
I mean we dont play 3 DM midfielders when we play Chelsea away.

Caroll made a difference - though Poulsen coming off will always make a difference.

Poor performance with some spark only after Carroll came on as a sub.

Only one away goal in the last 5 away games in Europe.

Kenny must revamp his squad in the summer. Sell the obvious ones. Just hope FSG/NESV gives him enough money to do so.

Agreed but given the almost complete lack of investment in Jan I doubt they'll make a significant amount available. Certainly not the kind of money required to challenge for the title.

I do agree with you.
But why play 3 CDM yesterday (and Cole and Raul also sort of CM - came back quite a bit) which left poor Kuyt all alone.
Enter Caroll and we controlled the game and had the best chance of the match (if Kuyt could control the ball).

Yeah i know Caroll was not fit to play full 90 min, but atleast another attacked was better than 3 CDM.

Also, you would think we playing Barca as we did not register a shot on goal until stoppage time in 1st half.

KK needs to learn abt European football - 6th in EPL > 6th in Portugal, for that matter > any league in the world.
He just needs to play our natural game.

How is the defence decent? Carragher will be a year older, Skrtel can be a liability, Agger is always injured and Kyriagos follows 1 MotM performance with 10 horrid ones.

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres says his time at Liverpool wasn’t the same following the “chaos” surrounding the club’s takeover earlier in the season.

After months of protests against Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the Reds were sold to Fenway Sports Group in October.

But Torres says he did not have time for the new owners’ plans to come into place, instead moving to Stamford Bridge for £50 million on the final day of the January transfer window.

"I knew I was an idol for the fans but it wasn't the same any more," he told Marca.

"The institution was in chaos with the sale. There was all this talk of possible projects.

"In many ways it reminded me of [former club] Atletico Madrid... a great history, many ideas but without money, it needed time. I don't have that.

"People aren't honest in the world of football. You can't say the truth or be clear with people. It's a business and nobody is anyone's friend."

Torres is pleased with the atmosphere around the Chelsea squad, and also criticised the “serious” attitude at former club Liverpool.

He added: "Chelsea have proved they have top-level players in all departments and that they will always be competitive whatever happens, with an owner who will invest when it is necessary.

"There are more personal relationships and jokes between the players than there were at Liverpool. Everything was much more serious there. Here, you don't have to prove you are a professional, it is assumed."

Rennes playmaker Sylvain Marveaux has revealed he is close to agreeing a summer move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old, who has been watched by scouts from both Manchester United and Chelsea, was the subject of a £3m bid from West Ham last year.

The left-sided midfielder was reportedly a guest at Anfield for the Reds' clash with Wolves in December and, despite watching an underwhelming 1-0 defeat, is apparently still happy to commit his future to the Merseysiders.

Marveaux said: "I am very close to reaching agreement with Liverpool about joining them next season."

The former France U21 star, who is currently recovering from groin surgery, is out of contract at the end of the season and the Rennes general manager, Pierre Dreossi, has already said he does not expect Marveaux to play for the Ligue 1 club again.

Seems nothing has fundamentally changed under Dalglish. Still too afraid to play against mediocre teams resulting in awful performances and even worse results while a "no hopers with nothing left to lose" attitude results in attractive attacking football against quality teams and good results.

I think it works like this: 5th automatically gets a spot, League Cup winners get a spot (Birmingham), and FA Cup winners. If the Cup winners already qualify, then it goes to runners up, then to next spot in EPL who don't qualify for Europa/CL already. There's also three fair play spots.

I can't agree more... did they not see that when we played utd??? We played carpet football with short passes. We dominated from the 1st second right to the last basically. Stick to that style and yes incorporate over the top balls, BUT only if it is coming from the likes of Johnson and Kelly after they have broken up the wings. In otherwords, crosses do work. But what Carra was doing last night, hoofing it up and over from the defence line won't work! I hate that type of football. Kick and hope for the best !!! FFS am I pissed...!!!

It's the mentality they're sent out onto the pitch with. Sit back and keep it tight. Notice how many passes were short and players caught on their heels in the game giving away possession.

Once the ref took the wind out of Sunderland's sails and it got "tasty" the players came out of their shells.

IMO we were very fortunate in the 1st half. Made up for last seasons beach ball incident.

Lucas has improved, Spearing is OK - maybe not top 4 material.
But Lucas i felt had a terrible game - seems he only plays well when Gerrard is there - maybe cos then he is second fiddle.

What do you'll think of Caroll - quite amazed that he found a player with almost every header - also was involved in some of our best moves - but he did lose the ball quite a bit, poor first touches - maybe it was just rustiness and i am guessing that a player of his type needs to gel with his players.
While Suarez is just class no matter who he plays for - best buy of the season.

I do believe Lucas has improved his game. He is playing way better than what he was last season. Last season Lucas couldn't pass, this season we seen him thread quite a few long, ground passes and also a good few short passes.

Whether he is good enough to help pool into a top 4 is not clear though. Still lotsa work to be done, and I don't know if we have the time.

I would like to see us challenging for the league next season. We can do it if the promises of a very active transfer season remains true.

He may have improved by miles but he's far short of being a top quality player. One thing in his favour is the dearth of quality defensive midfielders in the Prem at the moment.

In the past there was Mascherano, Viera, Makelele, Keane, Hargreaves,, Flamini, Hamann...

Now it's Mikel, Palacios, Barry, De Jong, Denilson, Song, Poulsen and Lucas. I suppose you can include Fletcher in there as well.

Personally I think Suarez is a bargain buy with his ability to take on defenders and his aggressive nature - willing to bite anyone, but Carroll... with such a hefty price tag I dunno he may not live up to his expectations, yes he'll provide the height advantage but I don't see anyone in the team that would send him that killer cross

Think Torres and Caroll may suffer due to their hefty price tags.
Both players though are doing well except scoring - though Torres was back to his best in his last few games against Chelsea but cannot find the net.
Caroll must be built in to the next drogba as he does have skills on the ground (unlike Heskey) and LFC must stop playing the long ball game (though Caroll finds a player almost every time).

Liverpool's new director of football Damien Comolli expects to have a busy summer as the club's owners step up the rebuilding process at Anfield.

Fenway Sports Group sanctioned the £57.8million purchases of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January, their first transfer window since taking over in October.

Although most of that came from the £50million sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea, it was a statement of intent from the Americans.

And Comolli, who was heavily involved in those deals and has now has even greater responsibility having been promoted from his role as director of football strategy, believes there will be more arrivals in the close season.

"The owners said from day one they want to improve things and turn things around quickly and I have said the same thing since I arrived, so I expect a busy summer," said the Frenchman, who was appointed by FSG in November while Roy Hodgson was still manager.

"When we prepare for the next season it's difficult to say we work to the January transfer window. We work from summer to summer.

"When the window shuts in September we are preparing for the next summer window, not the one in January because, as people say, usually not much goes on in January.

"We proved that wrong but as soon as it shuts on January 31, we are thinking about the summer and what we are going to do.

"We talk about different targets, about players we thought about in January but couldn't do and keep the scouting team working."

Comolli's recruitment plans may be made more difficult in the summer if he cannot offer potential signings European football.

Liverpool need to finish fifth if they are to qualify for the Europa League, but in order to do that they have to haul in Tottenham, who are four points ahead with a match in hand.

The Frenchman does not agree with the theory that a season without European football would help the club's rebuilding process.

"I think Liverpool should always compete for the best competitions," he said.

"I think we will have the squad depth next year to compete both in Europe and domestically if we manage to qualify for Europe.

"We've got to be there, we've got to be in Europe and at the top because we are Liverpool Football Club.

"Also, I've got to say it's sometimes easier to attract players when your club is involved in European competition.

"We'll do everything to get back there. We want to be in Europe, that's where we belong."

Yes, it's been discussed many times in the Soccer thread that United's midfield is, at present, below par. But that doesn't mean what I said isn't true either. Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Park and Scholes all have Champions League and Premier League medals. Hell, even Gibson has 2 League Cups and a Club World Cup to his name :)

And let's not forget this midfield is currently sitting at #1 on the Premier League standings.

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says his "priority" is to return to the Premier League when he ends his coaching hiatus.

The Spaniard has been unemployed since losing his job at Italian champions Inter in December, and claims to have had offers from both club and international sides.

This is the best part:

"At this moment in time I don't have any offer. Before I did, but now I don't have any offers. I have had some offers abroad and some national teams, but I needed to stay with the family ... relax a little bit and be ready for the next challenge."

What a glorious night at Anfield. The 11 men in RED played like a cohesive well oiled machine. Suarez and Carol proved that the pounds paid for them was well worth it. Flanagan "the new boy" was steady in defence growing with confidence as the game progressed, soon the investment Liverpool made in him will come full circle and he will be a great benefit to the team.

Kenny proves that Liverpool needs a manager that understands the pedigree and history of the team. Anfield is SMACK in the middle of a struggling community. When Liverpool FC does well LIVERPOOL the town does well. Not to mention BEX.CPT DOES VERY WELL TOO :D

I have to say, I'm an Arsenal fan and have been since the 1980's - but I grew up watching Dalglish's Liverpool. My dad was and still is a huge Liverpool fan and I will never forget what a huge impact Liverpool FC had on my football education so to speak. Liverpool were the best passing side I could remember under Dalglish and to have him back is great for football and especially English football. Heroes like him are hard to come by and I have no doubt he will lead Liverpool on to great success. I hope the Liverpool board give him a long term contract and he can finally have a crack at managing in Europe's elite competition again soon.

Last night was the culmination of the hard work him and his players put in. It's great to see. I doubt even the most begrudging Man Utd fan didn't wanna see Liverpool relegated.

Enjoy your moment, scousers!

Yes go for the WIN, because we know that Arsenal is very unpredictable. Even if we give them the WIN, does not mean they will win the league. Yes, Utd will take the league record away from us, but we will still have of taking that record back. 1 title not alot and if we can just get our squad right in the summer, we WILL be a team to be reckoned with.

But IMHO if Liverpool continue playing like they have been playing away this season, Arsenal is going to demolish us. Maybe someone can explain why don't we just play the same or similar type of football that we play at Anfield, away ?

Earlier in the game Jamie Carragher (concussion) and Fabio Aurelio (thigh) had to leave the field, adding to an already lengthy list of defensive injuries.

Andy Carroll was also substituted as a precaution.

Dalglish reflected: "I don't think there's another team anywhere that would show the attitude and commitment we showed out there today.

"They went through a wee bit of adversity, losing Fabio Aurelio early on and putting a 17-year-old boy on at left-back. Losing the captain, having a right-back who's only 18, losing a centre forward, losing a goal eight minutes into injury-time, and they still didn't want to accept they were going to get nothing from the game.

"I don't think I can speak any higher than that. Everybody will be sat there tonight proud at having seen their team produce a performance like that with the attitude and commitment."

Liverpool had three teenagers on the field in the second half and Dalglish is delighted with the young talent at the club.

He said: "Flanno (John Flanagan) is experienced, that was his second game! Sometimes the second game is the worst to play in but he did brilliantly today. Young Jack (Robinson) coming on - he's still available for the youth team next year. He adapted really well.

"It's really daunting to play at the Emirates against a team chasing the championship. It was fantastic, the way he went about his work.

"Jonjo (Shelvey) did fantastic, and wee Jay (Spearing) was fantastic on Monday and turned in another great performance today. We couldn't ask for any more from them.

"It's them that's pushed us. I don't make that decision, they do. In the last year and a half the development and improvement in the Academy has been fantastic.

"We've also got to be really careful that we don't throw them in and ruin them. That was a slight reservation about Jack playing at the Emirates, but he never let anyone down."

On the injuries sustained on the day, Dalglish added: "Carra is no problem. The challenge was innocuous and then one of the lads pushed him onto his side - then you think there's some problem. He's as right as rain now. Well, as right as rain for him!

"He's brand new.

"Fabio is a hamstring. Andy came off as a precaution. He jarred his knee."

Reporters asked the manager for his view on the two penalties after Arsene Wenger claimed the handball by Eboue which led to Kuyt's equaliser should not have been given.

Dalglish said: "My opinion of the two penalty decisions is that there was one right and one wrong: you can work it out for yourselves."

The Scot has had to tackle questions about whether the owners have offered him a long-term contract at every press conference. His post-match press session was no different.

"I get asked this every day and it's the same answer," he said.

"But regarding the owners, they are fully committed to bringing in new faces and spending money on the playing staff, so whoever has the privilege of managing the football club is also going to have the privilege of spending some money."

Sunday's result leaves Liverpool four points off European qualification, though rivals Tottenham have two games in hand. Arsenal, meanwhile, trail Manchester United by six points as Alex Ferguson's men chase a record 19th title.

One journalist suggested Liverpool had handed the Premier League to their bitterest rivals.

"We never handed anybody anything," replied Dalglish. "We beat them 3-1 at Anfield so we didn't hand it to them. We can only look after ourselves.

"In my eyes we're still the best club in English football, if not world football. The surprise is that we've not won a title for a long time.

"We never acquired enough points in any season since 1990. Rafa came close a couple of years ago, had a fantastic record against the so-called big four but just couldn't get it over the line."

Really? Seemed like a midfield destroyer type and not very good at it to boot. In fact, I can't remember him playing well for Pool. As far as I can recall he keeps trying very long passes/shots which never come off.

The other two lads were impressive today though. And Spearing.

Europa i have seen some skills from his guy - not consistent enough, but hopefully will get better with time.
Also remember Spearing is not exactly a youngster - he has been around for awhile.

Yea, respect to Rafa's legacy. He came close to winning the prem, and he did win the champions league. Seems like his changes at the Academy are starting to bear fruit.

Man! I still can't get over the fact of how amazingly Robinson played yesterday. Imagine if we had to put Konchesky there :O

Enjoyed that.

Agree with all the sentiments shared in the post.

Found this in one of the comments:

The last match I attended a few weeks ago I watched the warm up drills with fascination. They did a simple possession game in a small area, players in bibs had the ball, those without had to win it and vice versa. Intercepting rather than tacking. The best player bar none - Lucas. Little interceptions without the ball. With the ball, accurate short passes and quick feet.

Yeah, they are looking a lot better, and happier, as a unit... I think Flanagan and Robinson did well again and I agree, Suarez is class.

Passing is looking much better, and players look so much more comfortable on the ball than they did under Roy.

Good show by the lads. Well done to Kenny for having faith in the youngsters. Blessing in disguise, having some big guns out, just shows one that football is bigger than more players, almost everybody is REPLACABLE.

Those youngsters thrown in the deep end have heart, they will play for free in Red.

Kenny has lifted the doom and gloom, also a word on Woy, doing well at West Brom. He is an excellent mid-lower table manager.

True what you guys are saying, the hunger for winning is there. That is what the guys need, you don't have to be the greatest of player or have the best skills in the world, it helps. But if you hungry enough you will get it. Love the youngsters, but now the dilema is. Where is Kelly and Spearing going to fit into this whole mix with Gerrard and Johnson coming back.

Also on that note, young ones were good, but crossing into the box not so great. And big ups to Spearing, DAMN that boy has a shot and a half. Pity he didn't score.

LFC should be realistic. There will be no CL next year.Priorities should lie domestically, winning FA or League cup together with a top four league position, next year, should be more achievable. Winning trophies breeds confidence and will lead to more on field success.

Players will come and go,Kenny should be prudent in the market and buy wisely, far too many useless players have come in over the last five years.
