The last one got locked so lets give it another go...
This thread is for all loyal Liverpool Supporters. A place on myBB where we can discuss all things related to the Reds.

Dissapointing season last time round but the emergence of The likes of Torres, Skrtel and Babel was a highlite for me. Also the partnership between Stevie-G and Nando was breathtaking at times.

We have signed 3 players thus far:
Andrea Dossena(LB)
Phillip Degen(RB)
Diego Cavalliere(GK)

What are your thaughts regarding the 2008-09 season?

Barry on the way as deal is done

barryhome.jpegGareth Barry will bid a bitter farewell to Villa next week just as American keeper Brad Guzan arrives in Martin O’Neill’s changing squad.

Barry’s disputed exit to Liverpool is now just days away after the Anfield club finally struck a deal over the methods of payment in what will be a record sale for Villa.

Liverpool are paying around £15m in cash and throwing right-back Steve Finnan into the pot as well and that will go ahead within 72 hours now that Villa have agreed a time scale of staggered cash payments from Anfield.

That closing act of an angry farewell will coincide with 23-year-old Guzan being recruited for about £1m to fill one of Villa’s two goalkeeping vacancies .

O’Neill believes he has recruited the next big American goalkeeping talent heading for a major career in Europe in the footsteps of Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Tim Howard.

And the transfer will complete a meteoric rise for the 6ft 4in keeper who was an unknown on the US football scene less than three years ago but is now considered the best of their coveted group of stoppers.

Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara, a part-owner of Guzan’s Chivas MLS team Guzan is leaving has confirmed a deal has been struck and although he would not name the buying club the leak of the story flushed out confirmation from Villa Park today.

Vergera said: “He’s leaving for Europe, to England specifically, and we’re very happy and very glad that another Chivas player is going to Europe.”

Guzan, frustrated by red tape over his work permit when he tried to sign for Villa in January, says: “It’s been absolutely unbelievable.”

Keane Heading to Anfield in £18million Move PDF Print E-mail
Written by SAFF Editor
Saturday, 26 July 2008 09:00

Robbie Keane is due to sign for Liverpool next week after the two clubs agreed on a fee for the Irish Striker according to The Daily Mail.

The paper claims that Keane will be in Liverpool to undergo his medical after Tottenham accepted Liverpool's offer of £18million.

Liverpool have been chasing the striker for a while now and last month Rafael Benitez revealed that Keane is one of his main summer transfer targets.

"The Liverpool manager was absent from Melwood yesterday as European Championship winner Alonso returned to training seeking urgent talks over his future.

Benitez was believed to be busy finalising the Keane deal, which could rise to £20m if Liverpool win either the Premier League or Champions League during his time at Anfield. The Republic of Ireland striker, 28, will sign for his boyhood favorites more than a decade after turning down the chance to join Liverpool when he left Crumlin United in Dublin to start his career in England.

It became clear he would be leaving when Tottenham boss Juande Ramos did not even name him among the substitutes for Thursday night's friendly against Hercules in Spain.

He also refused to discuss the Keane situation afterwards. Benitez, however, is not giving up the chase for Barry - who was abused by angry Villa fans when he played for the reserves against Walsall in midweek - and still hopes to raise the money by selling players or persuading the club to release more funds." reported the paper

I actually dont understand why rafa did not make a top class winger a priority.

Doesn't fit his [-]balanced[/-] defensive set up

I think this poster may have a good idea of what rafa's planning

Since Benitez joined the club we have seen progress in the squad. A high turnover in players has occurred with one aim – ‘constant improvement’. Having a net spend over just over 80 million over four years, spending 20 million per season is not a vast amount compared to some of our rivals. The ‘poorer’ signings have gone in a ruthless yet quick manner – some for a profit after doing a decent job (Bellamy and Sissoko). The good signings has stayed, are at a good age to play for 5, 7 maybe even 10 years in some cases. As they can play for a number of years this makes the investment in stars such as Torres, Agger and Mascherano shrewd investments.

Every transfer window Benitez has had one aim – to improve the squad. Upgrades in positions have occurred – such as upfront with Cisse getting upgraded by Bellamy and the later being improved upon by Torres. This has occurred all over the pitch with centre midfield being improved with Diao – Sissoko – Mascherano again a sign of progress.

So where is Benitez taking this team?

Benitez is a control freak and a perfectionist. He’ll always focus on where to improve and next season he’ll want more clean sheets, more goals, more points and more control in games.

For arguments sake let’s say Benitez does sign two of our clear targets in Barry and Keane, with Crouch and Barry departing. What is that going to do to our team? Personally I think it will give the side more balance, more threat, more ‘possibilities’ and therefore more chance to improve and hopefully challenge for the title.

Barry, regardless of how much people think he’s worth, is a very good player. He’s not flashy, but he’s a good passer, has good positioning, versatile, good defensively, gets assists, goals and given his professional approach seems a perfect Benitez-type signing. Alonso is a beautiful footballer, but hand on heart I don’t think he’s been playing to his potential the last two years. Barry is more suited to the physical nature of the Premier League and could be another decent upgrade – certainly defensively alongside Mascherano shielding the back four.

Keane I think we’ll be an upgrade on Kuyt. He works hard, willing to track back, he’s versatile – able to play left or right of Torres, as a leading striker or a supporting one. But the difference is he’ll offer more threat than Kuyt. More goals, assists, can beat a player and this is what we need more match winners to help Gerrard and Torres. He’s more what Jol described Kuyt – a true ’20/20’ player getting close to 20 goals and 20 assists in a season. In a better team, with quality around him who knows he could thrive.

Both Barry and Keane are used to the Premier League. They have proven they can play to a high standard week in, week out. This is what you need to win leagues, consistently high standards – 7 or 8 out of 10 performances week in, week out.

Next season our team could have a side capable of changing formations with the same XI. In the past changes would usually have to be made for this to occur, but now I think Benitez can make subtle changes through out games making us harder to stop:

4-4-2 - Standard

----------------------------Reina--------------------------------

Arbeloa--------Carragher---------Agger-----------Dossena

Gerrard--------Mascherano-------Barry--------------Babel

-------------------Keane----------Torres-----------------------

Even this can be changed with Barry going left, allowing Dossena to overlap more, knowing Barry will cover. With Babel switching to right and Gerrard in the centre to get more possession:

----------------------------Reina--------------------------------

Arbeloa--------Carragher---------Agger-----------Dossena

Babel----------Mascherano-------Gerrard-------------Barry

-------------------Keane----------Torres-----------------------

4-2-3-1

----------------------------Reina--------------------------------

Arbeloa--------Carragher---------Agger-----------Dossena

------------------Mascherano-------Barry---------------------

Gerrard---------------------Keane---------------------Babel

-------------------------------Torres----------------------------

Keane, Babel and Gerrard can all inter-change as all comfortable in each position.

4-3-3

----------------------------Reina--------------------------------

Arbeloa--------Carragher---------Agger-----------Dossena

-----------Gerrard------Mascherano-------Barry--------------

-----------Keane-----------Torres-----------Babel--------------

3-5-2

----------------------------Reina-------------------------------

---------Carragher---------Agger-----------Barry-------------

Arbeloa----------Mascherano-----Gerrard-----------Dossena

----------------------------Keane---------------------------

------------------Babel-----------------Torres-----------------

Which can obviously being changed with subs to include Skrtel at the back, Degan as a with back – giving Gerrard a free role behind two strikers.

The side is evolving all the time. With more players able to play in a number of positions, offer more formations and most importantly more threat as they have quality. This is what Benitez wants a free flowing team than can switch between formations giving the opposition more problems as the movement with be fluid and knowing which players to mark will be a struggle.

I think it is an exciting team filled with players who have performed in this tough league. A side that is balanced between defending and attack – with threat all over, rather than just centrally as seen in the past.

- Add to this the return of Sammy Lee and Pellegrino.
- Agger back to help the defensive record and the distribution from the back.
- More attacking fullbacks to offer width up the field.

I think we should feel quietly confident about our chances next season. The best team wins the league, not the flashiest. I think if we lineup with Barry and Keane next season – there will be few teams more effective than ours. The Kaizen approach is working.

Where to you think Benitez is taking this team and how it is evolving? I will be interested to hear your thoughts…

Leto denied passport
by Robin Hackett, 04 August 2008

Liverpool look set to send Argentinian winger Sebastien Leto on loan after he was refused a work permit – leaving Rafa Benitez to call for a change to the work permit system.

Leto played four games for Liverpool last season on an Italian passport, but that was revoked after the Italian Government investigated the validity of a number of citizenship decisions.

Liverpool subsequently applied for a work permit, with Benitez outlining his plans to feature the 21-year-old more regularly than the coming season, but the British Government has rejected that application, leaving Benitez to question the current process.

“The system needs to change, clearly,” he told the Daily Express.

“I cannot understand how an Argentine player who has been in pre-selection for the Olympic squad and has played in the Champions League and at a club like Liverpool is not good enough.

“Now we need to find a solution for him and find him a good team. Maybe in the future when he is playing Champions League, someone will say, ‘We made a mistake’.”

Leto has already held talks with Greek side Olympiacos about a season-long loan and looks likely to complete the switch shortly.

Shame, not a bad thing I suppose. He will be better off getting some playing time at another club to get match experience as he is not ready to break into Liverpool's first team squad yet. Looking at his progress though over the last year, he hasn't impressed me as of yet. He is still young though so we will see.

Nemeth played for about 20 minutes tonight. Should have scored one though but his control let him down. Doubt Nemeth will play first team footy unless we (and god i hope we do) sell Voronin
I Wasn't really that impressed with the kids tonight alan. A lot of poor passing and poor decision making. Only one that impressed me was Ngog with another good goal. But it's just a friendly so not too many complains from my side.

I thought they did well. Created a few excellent chances. There was one string of passes that would make Arsenal proud. Ngog looks like a great signing. Spearing though was awful the whole game. Hope Gerrard isn't too badly injured

I'm worried(still) by the lack of width. Yossi at LM and the lumbering golden retriever on the right means no natural wide player to spread the defence. If this is our starting line up then we're in for another battle for 4th I'm afraid. :(

With Babel and kuyt/yossi on the wings you can forget about width.

All we can do is hope that rafa has something planned to make up for the lack of width. I heard that apparently Dossena and Degen will provide that with over lapping runs but from the little I've seen from them I'm not too sure about that.

And yeah your right. Spearing had a really bad game.

This wing back theory is a bit of ruse IMO. David Fairclough pointed out that it's a huge amount of work for the full backs to get through game after game. Unfortunately this theory falls back on Rafa [-]defence tactics[/-] balance philosophy. Rafa will not risk playing wingers. If he does it'll be only one winger with defensive role for the player on the other flank for 'balance'.

no matter how narrow we are in midfield, i am sure we will play 4 at the back. keane will be best as part of a 2 upfront. or playing upfront with torres playing off him. which means a lot of midfield jiggling for rafa.

IMO we let them out play us. There was no attacking impetuous at all. The whole game plan as usual was to sit back and keep a clean sheet. Once the opposition is allowed to gain the momentum it's near impossible to get it back. It's a case of holding out and riding our luck. Which is exactly what we did. Full credit to Liege because they played very well but if we had gone out on the offensive and put them under pressure they wouldn't have to able to play the game they did.

Again look at last season. Away at Basiktas and Porto we were outplayed yet at home we destroyed them. The only reason the same didn't happen at Marseille away is because Rafa was forced to go out on the offensive and look what happened.

Liverpool were outplayed fullstop. They even made a desperate attempt by bringing on the injured gerrard to try and get a goal.If liverpool play like they did yesterday at home 100% they will get knocked out of the champs league. All they need is one goal away and liverpool would need to score twice to beat them.

For me. the biggest issue is when Pool resort to just hoofing the ball upfield; Stevie comes on, all of a sudden they start passing the ball upfield instead. Defensive or not, STOP just kicking the ball, in essence giving the ball away and allowing the opposition to run at you.

Barry won't happen this season, if it ever happens.

I think if 'Pool are serious about Barry, it might happen next summer. The asking price should be lower also.

The game was atrocious. Kuyt was once again lost on the right wing, and Benayoun was frustrated on the left. The last time the Kop had a decent left winger was John Barnes ... in the 80s. Come on Liverpool board, do something fast. I'm glad Reina had both eyes open during that tie.

They play like that against Sunderland, then a loss on the opening day of the season is a certainty.

We need a title tilt, this season. Or even Benitez is surplus to requirements :(

BARRY STAYING WITH VILLA

Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry has pledged his immediate future to the Midlands club.

The England international has been a transfer target for Premier League rivals Liverpool since the end of last season, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a fee.

Barry was disciplined by Villa earlier in the summer after criticising manager Martin O'Neill's handling of the saga, and made it clear he wanted to move to Anfield.

But the talented midfielder has since been welcomed back into the fold and his agent, Alex Black, has confirmed that he will not be on the move during the current transfer window.

Black admitted that Barry made the decision to stay at Villa Park a fortnight ago, and talks over any new deal will now not take place until the end of the season.

In a statement released to Sky Sports News, Black said: "After much speculation I can confirm that Gareth Barry will not leave Aston Villa before the transfer window closes.

"Gareth made the decision to stay two weeks ago and informed Aston Villa of his intentions.

"During this time discussions have taken place to decide the best way forward for all parties.

"Any talks regarding potential new contracts at Aston Villa will not take place until the end of the season.

"Gareth wants to concentrate on playing on the best of his ability for Aston Villa, and we hope this draws a line under the matter."

Last half of last season he played as a right forward in a 4-5-1(4-3-3) formation IIRC. Now he is playing right midfield in a 4-4-2. But yeah he was awful up front. Rafa it seems will try to fit him in anywhere :(

TORRES AND GERRARD INJURY UPDATE
Paul Eaton 04 September 2008

Rafael Benitez today confirmed both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are back in light training at Melwood.
With both players facing a race against time to be fit for next weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester United, the manager has revealed they are each "ten to twelve days" away from a return to competitive action.

Torres is battling to overcome a hamstring tear sustained against Aston Villa at the weekend while Gerrard is recovering from a minor groin operation.

"Both players are now back jogging and will be out for ten to twelve days," said Benitez.

"Gerrard might be back before Torres but you never know."

Gerrard hits the nail on the head

"Against Chelsea in the cups, we've done them more than they've done us, but in the league we have to be a bit more attack-minded to win.

"Over the last couple of years we've gone into games against United and Chelsea very organised tactically - defensive if you like - and still lost 1-0.

"Have the same sound defence and show more bollocks going forward, and it could be 1-0 to us.

"In these matches the first goal is massive; if you concede it, nine times out of 10 you don't get back. It's important a few risks are taken to try to score that goal against these teams because it gives you such a psychological boost."

Odd that he subbed the 3 forwards. Maybe not Torres or even Gerrard but Masch wasn't a 100% and Lucas struggled IMO. Alonso should have come on for Lucas instead of Babel coming off.

Why didn't Hyypia or even Agger start. This game was perfect for Hyypia. Defend against the long throws while being a serious threat at corners. Seems typically defensive minded Rafa was too concerned about being caught on the break with Hyypia's lack of pace. What about Agger he offers far more going forward than Skrtel or Carra

Fern9do
22-09-2008, 07:09 AM
Skrtel and carra are very similar imo alan.Thats why i dont understand why Agger isn't playing alongside one of them. Maybe agger is too attack minded for Rafa's liking:(
And why the hell is Ryan babel warming the bench when kuyt plays 90 mins week in week out. I mean ffs the guys has scored 3 league goals, two penalties and one he didnt know anything about(hyypia's flick on hitting his kneee) since he start of the 2007-08 season!!!!

To be fair Agger started the game against Liege and was awful. But Stoke was perfect for some game time for him.

Agreed about Kuyt. Pathetic tactics from Rafa again. Stoke allowed him a lot more space and time on the ball knowing he could do little if anything while they concentrated on squeezing the threats like Torres out the game.

Read somewhere that Hamburg was interested in signing Kuyt but Liverpool wanted 14mill. Let's hope Jol makes a move again for him in Jan and matches the asking price.

In scoring twice at Goodison Park, Torres took his haul of goals since joining Liverpool last summer to 36. In that time, Ronaldo, with another against Bolton this weekend, has netted 44 times. But the stats do not do the Spaniard full justice in comparison to the Portuguese forward. For while Ronaldo's haul since last August includes seven penalties and five free-kicks, every one of Torres' goals for Pool has been scored from open play.

http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8742_4207553,00.html

and that was Torres first year in a defensive set up team who finished 4th well behind Manure

Frustrated Daniel Agger may find lure of Real Madrid too hard to resist

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article4871090.ece

Real Madrid have declared their intention to exploit growing uncertainty over Daniel Agger’s future at Liverpool by making a firm bid for the defender when the transfer window opens in January. Agger is highly regarded by Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, but a troubled rehabilitation from a broken foot early last season has raised doubts about whether he has a long-term future at Anfield.

Agger expected to be back in action within six weeks after suffering a stress fracture to the second metatarsal in his right foot in September 2007, but after a series of setbacks he has only just returned to Liverpool’s first-team squad and is struggling to break up the central-defensive partnership of Martin Skrtel, who was signed in his absence, and Jamie Carragher. With less than two years left on his contract, Agger is known to be restless, despite expressing his commitment to Liverpool this week, and it remains to be seen how his negotiations on a new deal may be affected by Real’s public declaration of interest in his services.

“He is a player we have been looking at for a long time and it is likely we will bid for him in January,” José Ángel Sánchez, the vice-president of Real, said yesterday. “He is a world-class player and without a doubt he would fit into our system.

“We already had plans about buying Agger this summer, along with some other players, but the Robinho situation took so much attention and demanded so many resources from the club that we had to drop the plans about putting a bid in for Agger and other players that we had in mind. What we need is a defender and a striker and, at the moment, Agger is on top of our list.”

It is unclear what kind of role Bernd Schuster, the Real coach, has in mind for Agger — given that he has Fabio Cannavaro, Pepe, Christoph Metzelder, all central defenders, as well as Sergio Ramos and Gabriel Heinze, who are comfortable playing there — but the 23-year-old could hardly fail to have his head turned by interest from the Spanish champions at a time when he is battling to reassert himself.

In an interview with a Danish television station this week, Agger denied claims that he had clashed with Benítez over his performance during a jittery goalless draw away to Standard Liège in August, but he did express frustration at his struggle to regain his first-team place. “Of course there are things that Benítez was not satisfied with after Liège, but it is a big lie to say we had an argument,” Agger said. “I certainly hope it is only football reasons why I am not playing.

“I’m happy at Liverpool. I have no problem in this club. The manager has just said that the team is playing very well and that is why I am not playing. I want to stay here and fight for my place in the squad. I’m not satisfied with the fact that I’m not playing but I have to cope and accept it.”

Benítez has suggested that he was aghast upon discovering recently that Agger has less than two years remaining on the 4½-year contract he signed when he joined Liverpool from Brondby in January 2006. He has instructed his board to offer the defender a new long-term deal as soon as possible and has been encouraged by the club’s response.

Benítez has been frustrated by the time it has taken for Agger to return from injury, but, despite the form of Carragher and Skrtel this season, he is certain to use the Denmark defender once he has shown that he has regained his fitness and confidence. In particular Benítez believes that Agger’s technical ability can give the team’s attacking play an extra dimension, particularly against obdurate opponents at Anfield, having bemoaned the defender’s absence from the recent goalless draw with Stoke City.

Would hate to see the lad go.....hope there is no truth to this.

To see Liverpool's delirious celebration of Dirk Kuyt's winning goal at Eastlands today, after they had been 2-0 down at the end of a thoroughly miserable first half, was to see a side with an increasingly powerful belief that destiny is with them, and that it has decided their run without a league title will end at 19 years.

Liverpool did not play particularly well until Pablo Zabaleta was given a straight red for an appalling challenge on Xabi Alonso, after which they picked City apart at will, but that only adds to the worthiness of their victory. There is an inclination to talk of such victories as displaying the "mark of champions", when a team have played badly but willed or lucked their way to a win.

Yet what is just as important as the perception that a lucky victory is the preserve of the bona fide title contenders is the extent to which the confidence and sense of fate that can be drawn from such victories permeates through future contests. Liverpool will glean an immeasurable psychological boost from the manner of their win.

There are still issues with the team, not least at full-back, but this will only reinforce the growing belief on the Kop that this could be Liverpool's year. Late wins, comeback wins, lucky wins: Liverpool are ticking a lot of the boxes of the potential champion. The force is strong in these ones.

Every title-winner recalls one symbolic victory: recent examples include Manchester United's heist at Anfield in March 2007, Chelsea's show of bare-chested cheek after withstanding a physical battering at Blackburn in February 2005, and Thierry Henry's 4-2 win over Liverpool in April 2004. Usually, by their very nature, they come in the second half of the season. But if Liverpool win the league this year, this might be the one.

Comeback wins (Liverpool have already come from behind three times to win this season) and in particular late goals offer a window into a very healthy soul – remember how many Manchester United's treble winners scored – and this is the third time in seven league games that Liverpool have won with a goal in the final 10 minutes, two of them in injury time. Ryan Babel's winner against United also came late, with 13 minutes to go.

Liverpool are gathering force through each game and, as a consequence, gathering an even stronger force for the long-game of the the title race.

Torres injury worry for Liverpool

Fernando Torres looks likely to miss Liverpool's next two matches after suffering a thigh injury playing for Spain against Belgium on Wednesday.

The striker was substituted on 16 minutes, clutching his right thigh.

Spanish media reported that Torres, 24, had suffered either a hamstring strain or a tear, and suggested he would be out for a minimum of seven to 10 days.

Meanwhile another Liverpool forward, Ryan Babel, damaged his ankle playing for Holland in their 1-0 win in Norway.

Babel, who missed Euro 2008 with ankle ligament problems, played no further part in Wednesday's match after going down in a tackle from Morten Gamst Pedersen on 26 minutes.

Liverpool have a busy schedule, with a home match against Wigan on Saturday preceded by the away Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid, Torres's former club, next Wednesday.

The critical away trip to Chelsea on Sunday 26 October is one match both players would be desperate to be fit for.

While details concerning Babel's injury remained unclear, Spain team doctor Oscar Celada told Spanish television that any sort of muscle tear would leave Torres on the sidelines for a minimum of 10 days.

Celada added: "He has intense pain in the back part of the thigh. It is difficult to diagnose now exactly the extent [of the injury], if it is a question of a strain or a small tear. If it is a strain then he could be out for about a week."

Torres has struggled with hamstring problems before, most recently at the beginning of September when he was sidelined for the international break after tearing the muscle in the goalless draw against Aston Villa.

The Spurs game summed up why Rafa can't win the prem. In the first half Spurs were doing nothing but asking to be attacked just like A. Madrid but no Rafa was content to sit on a 1-0 lead and 'control' the game. Both games should have been over by half time. Instead Rafa won neither. Unfortunately having got lucky at Chelsea people think this might actually work forgetting the dozens of times it's failed and will continue to fail in the long run in the Prem

Exactly. Even in Europe where you generally can get away with this style of footie last season we needed to win our last 3 games after not winning any of the first 3. We scored 16 goals including a 4-0 away win to Marseilles.

Liverpool And Arsenal Dream Of Xavi
Xavi's sensational form has not gone unnoticed on other shores, with two English heavyweights eying up a move for the Barca idol...
»Comments (59) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Having picked up the award for the best player at Euro 2008, Xavi's form shows no signs of abating as he continues to be one of Barca's most valuable players this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool and Arsenal harbour dreams of signing the Barca midfielder. A seemingly unlikely proposition at first, their interest is based on the reported disagreements arising in Xavi's current contract negotiations with Barca.

Xavi, whose current contract expires in 2010, is said to be less than satisfied with the latest terms offered by the club. An identified person close to Xavi is reported to have claimed that Barca's attitude during negotiations is "arrogant".

At the end of the day, however, Xavi and Barca are made for each other, and a deal between the two will surely eventuate. While his latest stellar performance against Malaga will interest the English further, it will also strengthen Barca's desire to keep the man from Terrassa, thus reducing Liverpool and Arsenal's efforts to remaining as mere dreams.

Benitez to discuss new contract
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is set to be offered a new contract at Anfield.

The successful Spaniard is likely to meet with the club's owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks in the next week to discuss an extension to his current deal.

The Merseysiders have enjoyed their best start to a Premier League season and moves are afoot to keep Benitez at Anfield.

He said: "I received a phone call from Tom Hicks on behalf of George Gillett also. They are talking about a meeting with my advisors and a contract extension. This is very positive news.

"We decided to meet in the next week and now my advisors are in contact with them. We haven't spoken about the length of the contract but we talked and we all want to find a solution as soon as possible.

Actually we only got those chances in the second half when Spurs started to play. In the first half they were absolutely rubbish but we were content to sit on our one goal lead when we should have been all over them creating chances and finishing them off. Same thing happened against A. Madrid. First half they too were rubbish and yet we only scored one goal hardly creating any chances and were content with "controlling" the game. Again against Bolton they sat back the whole of the first half and yet we hardly created any chances. Kuyts goal was excellent. Only Keane missed a sitter. We should have been 3 up by half time. Instead we got lucky it wasn't one all

Don't you think it's odd that for 4 years and half a dozen different attacking players and we still have this "can't take our chances" problem?

Whare your guys views on your defender Dossenna? I think he is the weak link whenever he plays.

We were the 4th top scoring club in the Prem last year. With Torres being the joint 2nd top scorer and we all know he would have got bags of goals even for Derby. In the CL we scored 16 IIRC in the last 3 games of our group. Could it be that Rafa was forced into offensive tactics because we had to win all 3 games after only scoring 2 goals in the first 3 games against the same opponents?

I'm just happy they missed in a game that we won. What about Dirk kuyt! Brilliant goal I must say:o. he may not have much skill but he seems to be scoring regular-ish since Torres' absence.

Guys we need back in left back and right back.I think Gareth Bale of Spurs will be a great signing for us.I hear that Simoa wants to come to the premiership. He is giving Rafa a sign to come and get him. He will be a excellent signing ans solving our problems on the right hand side going forward and scoring goals and taking free kick. Will be nice competition between him and Kuyt. Lastly we need another top striker to band in all those chances that we don't put away. By the way, those mancsters have 4 stikers to choose from.rooney, tevez, berba and ron.We only have Torres and Keano as out and out strikers. Gerrard, babel,Kuyt and ngog play all a supporting strking role. we need to make at least 2 signigs in january. our reserve team is lacking quality and cannot replace the gerrards, torres of this world.

what do you guys think?

the scum have 3 strikers ,ronaldo plays on the right ;) however no thanks to simoa ,kuyts work on the right is priceless ,have you seen simoa play against good opposition ,he nowhere near the same player when he gets no time an space to run at people ,dont get me wrong he would add somthing to our team just not enough to warrent leaving Dirk out ,people really underestimate the value of Dirk in our team especially in the tough games he will run and tackle for 120 minutes ,just think who was the player who still had the energy to get onto Babels cross in the 120 min in that CL qualifier against Standard Liege ;)

i dont think we should go for much in the jan transfer window ,however i would like to see us go for that polish winger playing for Dortbmund and yori Zirkov played left back for russia in the euro's havent seen a left back used as an attacking weapon as he was since the great Roberto Carlos ,i would be happy if we could bring those to in and they both still very young ,and wouldnt cost the world :D

It would be nice if Liverpool could sign someone like Sergio Aguero, he is a young star

Yes, he scored more last season but that doesnt make him a striker.

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has warned boss Rafael Benitez that his patience is starting to wear thin after finding himself reduced to a supporting role at Anfield. The Israel international has started just four of Liverpool's 13 Barclays Premier League matches to date this season, with seven further appearances coming from the bench.

"If the situation remains the same over the next few months, and I'm not getting more time in the middle, I will not want to continue as a Liverpool player," Benayoun told Israel's Channel Five TV. "The fact that I have spent so much time on the bench, while there has been a winning formula on the pitch, tells you everything."

Well yes Yossi, unfortunately for you it does.

In other news, The Sun claims that Liverpool are Alvaro Arbeloa is set to receive a new deal, with Atletico Madrid said to be interested in the Spanish full-back.

Not good. Very worried about Babel getting itchy feet.

Doubt Babel will get itchy feet alan. Hes stil a kid in many ways so i think hes okay with being on the bench, whereas Yossi is reaching his peak and needs to be playing more regularly. Love the guy but wont exactly be crying if we sold him.

Selling arbeloa would be just about as stupid as selling say hmmm...Finnan!

And about our league chances...if we can keep Gerrard,Keane and Torres fit im very confident that we can push Chelski all the way:) Not getting my hopes up but its hard not to start believing. Stil early days though.

one thing i will say ,we are resembling Rafa's great Valencia side ,in the fact that we are prolly the most difficult team to play against as we give our oposition no space to play remember Chelsea and Manure this season :D,they couldnt play their normal attacking football ,and we seem to have this "we fill fight till the end" resolve about us ,i remeber after the spurs match harry said that was one of the luckiest wins he has ever achieved in his career cause we battered them :D , i think we will go close this season

rafa is a tactically brilliant manager (diametrically opposed to scolari who is a duffer at it) and is one of the chief reasons why i'm worried about chelsea's chances this season. any anager with an inkling of tactical awareness would know how to close us down. the chelsea-liverpool game reminded me of portugal vs russia - although the differance in quality wasnt as large. still wouldnt like to see you win it though :)

poor team selection by rafa.i am so frustrated we could not get the 3 points against a fulham side and nogal at home.only condolences that the others did not captalise on our poor result.

questions has to be asked why rafa started with leiva.i mean the guy is not lfc class nor premiership standard.he should have starte with an experienced player in midfield like alonso who can provide torres with chances.he should have started with torres and babel as a striker up front and play keano just behind them in a supporting striker role.in the middle you have reira on the left , alonso and masch in the middle and kuyt on the right.back four stays the same.we played at home and be very offensive, but rafa's tactics is defensive as usual, thats why we drew so many games last season b'cause he was so defensive. you will never win anything if you are not positive and putting a very offensive lineup at home.i felt like the fans, very frustrated.

rafa needs to understand that you cannot play your so called fringe players against any minnows anymore.the league is tight this year.you've got to play the best combinations as possible.the only player that stood out was torres.alonso wa not that bad either, but came on too late.why is babel on the bench.reira looks tired and lost his touch a bit.babel looks fresh and must be played on every occasion.

we need to strengen the team in jan.just shows you how valuable is gerrard to the team.he must ahve sit in the stands wanting to pull out his hair of frustration.i hope its an eye opener for rafa when selecting teams.

love ot hear what you guys have to say
feeling beta afta seeing all the other results

Why the **** was Xabi(Arguably our best player thus far) on the bench? Ive lost all faith in that Lucas boy.
Lucas and Mascherano in the centre against a team like Fulham had goalles draw written all over it.

Again we see that unless we go a goal behind we dont play all out attacking football.
We dont deserve to win the league playing like this. Chelsea and United are playing much better football. Trust me it hurts to admit that:(

I've been a Chelsea fan for close to 12 years, and belive me... I love flowing, attacking footy as much as the next bloke but I was happiest when we were winning...

Lucas was shockingly poor. Gotta give Alonso a break but why do it when Gerrard is injured and why after Lucas was so pathetic did Masch get supstituted.

How much did he pay for Lucas? I read 6mill somewhere :o

Exactly. In the first half we played counter attack at home again . Against the team with the worst away record. Rafa aways shows minnows far to much respect ffs. His whole game plan was to contain Johnson and use Torres and Keane to catch them on the break. In the end Torres who was in great form spent most of the time miles away from goal trying to get on the ball because Reira and Kuyt were back defending and he had to do their job for them

Rafa's excuse was they were tired. Why then only bring on Babel with 10 minutes left in the game? Why no Yossi on at all .

Same old, same old. We'll drop points again against the likes of Stoke and Fulham at home this season. We should be at least 5 points clear now

Ag Alan we should know better than to question Rafa's logic...or lack of it when it comes to team selection.
I think Yoss is ideal for these kind of matches but Kuyt will play no matter what so i think Yossi will leave soon.
Luckily Chelsea drew but your right, we should be 4 or 5 points clear of chelsea by now.
