UUNET SA launches UUsat
Dear Chris Roper

We are excited to announce that during the Sat.Com 2004 Conference next week, an annual event aimed at driving education and development around satellite solutions, which takes place from 17-20 February 2004 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, UUNET will be launching its satellite solution set to the African market - UUsat.

Businesses in Africa require the ability to communicate across their value chain, with their customers, suppliers and employee's no matter where they are located, while being assured of service stability, which in turn will help facilitate communications and business efficiencies. Our satellite solution set enables direct IP connectivity for Internet or IP-VPN access using a choice of various complementary high-speed satellite service infrastructures for corporate enterprises wanting broad reach, quality of service and reliability throughout Africa.

The UUNET satellite solution set is available in two editions, standard and customisable. UUsat standard edition offers corporates access to speeds ranging from 64 Kbps to 2Mbps transmit and up to 10 Mbps receive to and from the UUNET network. UUNET customisable edition is primarily aimed at ISPs, Telco's and large corporations who want to offer their customers sophisticated services. This solution offers customised access speeds ranging from 384kbps and 2-45MB or larger transmit and receive solutions.

We are making use of a unique hybrid solution into Africa, combining the best available technologies enabling access into UUNET's global IP backbone from a centralised hub facility based in Europe. Our partnership with multiple providers such as Intelsat, the largest service provider of global satellite solutions worldwide, and Plessey (Pty) Ltd, whom provide comprehensive UUsat support services on behalf of UUNET, will ensure that we are able to deliver Internet and IP-VPN solutions to single or multiple sites in more than 30 countries across Africa.

Should you wish to know more about this new solution set, please do not hesitate to contact your Account Manager who will be able provide a detailed overview of the product and benefits that this solution will provide your business.

If you are attending the Satcom 2004 conference we look forward to seeing you at the UUNET exhibition stand.

Best regards,

Sean Victor

Doesn't mean to much as they are not offering the service in SA.

And it's for corporates... eish... like Telkom, they focus on companies, not individuals... with pricing to match [:)]

Just imagine where SA would be now if it weren't for Telkom

Welcome to big business. UUNET (soon to be MCI?) is a first tier ISP, their focus is corporate. Why? There is no REAL money to be made selling to the individual - hell, the costs of supporting a small client tend to chew through any profit you do actually make. Without the corporates UUNET wouldn't have the money to sustain their infrastructure. For the sake of simplicity I am also grouping SME's with corporates. Without UUNET's infrastructure in place you wouldn't have all the second tier ISP's (mostly SME's) who do actually provide a service to the individual. Many companies adopt this attitude. If - as an individual - you can afford their services well then bully for you [:)] For the sake of clarity, by real money I mean anything >R10k month. Which isn't to say that a R6k/month contract isn't real money. They're just in different categories.

The company I work for adopts this very same attitude. We have minimum requirements that HAVE to be met before we will even think of signing a contract with a customer - this is above and beyond credit checks.
