A Metro police spokesperson said that 26 cars and a truck collided on the N1 south between Buccleuch and Rivonia on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said the freeway had been closed.

Police urged motorists coming from Midrand to use alternative routes.

"Motorists coming from Midrand must not take the Bloemfontein and Roodepoort off-ramp but must take the N3 or M1," said Mamonyane.

And let me guess- the truck caused this

They should be banned from the roads. They drive so slow on purpose, and some of them drive the trucks as if it is a taxi

Crazy indeed.
Does anyone know yet what the cause of this is?
I see driving standard was at an all time low yesterday- a rolled car less than 500m from my residence on a straight piece of road  How'd they do it is beyond me

why would he think 'blown tire' ? so if the tires are flat/blown, it causes the car to roll ?

catch on a straight road if your front tyre burst's, there is a good chance u can lose control and roll the car

back tyre i would say no

If it was a burst tyre I would first think someone didn't maintain the tyres properly... though that isn't always true.

Actually, it could very much cause the vehicle to roll, so Turiko is right.

Sorry folks. no blown tires. All four intact as far as I could see. I was in a hurry to get home so I didn't take note of any other detail above what I mentioned.

The problem is that, during this time that particular piece of road I refer to, is bumper-to-bumper and moves an average of 300m per 20 minutes. So the driver of the rolled vehicle must have done something seriously wrong to wind up like that.

The worst is racing trucks, you know when you have 2 slowass trucks trying to overtake each other but neither wants to give in...

You are right - potholes cause burst tyres too. Hit a pothole in the Free State and burst two tyres and cracked a rim. Fortunately I had presence of mind to not touch the brakes otherwise I could probably have put the car on its roof.

But, that aside, I think that cars upside down are usually pilot error

I posted this last night when I drove past it shortly after the officials arrived on the scene - I thought it was worse than it actually was: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=127207

Those pics were taken some time after the accident based on what I saw shortly after it happened - the truck appears to have been moved and all the other cars are gone. I had pics taken on my cell but they didnt come out...
