I was lucky to have opened my account when they first started international trading.
The only way to open an account now is if you have a US (or other permitted country) address. That way you can pay using PayPal, but you will need a US banking account to receive payments.
So if you know someone in the US, borrow their address [;)]

Most sellers will only deliver to the registered ccard address, to avoid fraud.
So if you get a US or other based ccard you will struggle to get
your purchases delivered to your local address.
So if you want that 5mpixel camera and the like,
make a shopping list with your friends and go and fetch it yourself
and enjoy a free holiday with some to spare.
While you there get a Wells Fargo ccard and your paypal.
Why can't this just all be done here ????? OK, I know [8D]
Someone once said that our banking was the most advanced in the world,
they also said our army was so strong we could March to Cairo in a week if we wanted.

I am also struggling to receive payments from clients in the US. Paypal would've been so much easier (since it's what they prefer in the first place).
Anybody have suggestions on easy ways to receive payments from the US? Does any bank of ours have a solution for this?

I get cheques from the US. At first the bank took 10 days to clear the money, then after about 3 months of regular cheques they cleared it in 2 - 4 days. It takes about 10 days for it to arrive after posting in the US, in the last 3 years only 3 have gone missing.

Without paypal and selling on ebay and the like you
lose up to 80% of potential sales - maybe more.
Our banks and govt. do not want you to sell overseas
without their chunk of your hard work.
The Reserve Bank has got every local bank by the balls.
Somehow they have the idea that we are their slaves and the
banks are their thugs.
The only way is to get an offshore ccard paypal registered,
ship your goods in bulk to a friend in US and get them to
deliver all orders as if you are operating from within US.
Your e-business will flourish - because you could deliver
within hours of auction end and paypal payment by the buyer.
Americans pay fast and expect fast delivery - within 2 days.
Another advantage of Paypal -
Once you have been paid the money is yours, guaranteed.
Direct credit card payments can be reversed within 3 months
if the buyer can find a reason to be dissatisfied with the purchase
and you lose your money.
Of course as citizen of this country the above is all unlawful.
If you are US based and sell across state lines - there is no
tax payable by the buyer.
The delivery system in US is amazing - you can expect about
999 out of 1000 deliveries to arrive within 2/3 days using
USPS and pay about $3-4 for a parcel up to 1Kg. Insurance
also is dirt cheap and claims are settled promptly.
Basically you need a partner in the States if you are serious
about selling in US.
The key is not to ship individual lower cost items - too expensive.
Bulk ship all your items to your US partner, collect your money
into your Paypal account and control all the action from your
PC. The buyers won't even know you're from South Africa.
Americans buy american as the first choice, because they can trust
a sale based in America.
btw. if your products are good and better than specified, you
can expect over 99% successful payments and plenty repeat business.
Americans pay and they pay fast - you must deliver just as fast.

Where is the source of the shipment, how big, how heavy ??
From US you can send parcels - up to 1Kg. for like $15-20 without
insurance - door to door to most worldwide centres
One thing about shipping.
A parcel from US to here might cost say $20.00.
Same parcel from here to same US address costs $100.00
Door to door Fedex type service.
Once again we gettin ripped off this end, by who ??

it's def. under 1kg. My friend buys car stuff. Vinyls, gear know, dials blah blah. He bought new angel eyes(more than 1kg probs) lights from germany and paid like R100 for delivery. If you buy it here it costs about R4500. Over there he paid R1200 + R100 = R1300.
Big difference. I wanted to buy a phone. That can't way much. If I wanted to buy it. Through what delivery service should I recommend them to say?

I am unable to renew my Paypal account ,helpdesk replies
"The capability for South African residents to open a PayPal Account has
been terminated. It was determined that PayPal did not have the full
capabilities to support South Africa at this time. We are continuing to
further research this issue and will possibly re-add South Africa at a
later time.
Please note that South African members with an account will be able to
maintain that account as long as their account information does not change.
This means that these members will not be able to update their financial
information or change their address."
But once the credit card expires ,We can not extend it,therefor the acoount can only receive money now,can not send !
Is our banking-cartel truly responsible for this ?
Does anyone have some insight on this ?

I am in exactly the same boat - had an old FNB Credit card registered with Paypal before they struck South Africa off their books. When my card got renewed recently the number changed, and I was not allowed to update it on PayPal :( . Hopefully the situation changes soon (someone needs to be lobbying for this). Small consolation - but did you know PayPal was invented by a South African?
South Africans may enjoy multi-language access, but PayPal absence puts online spree off limits
Information Technology Editor
SA's footprint on the internet has been acknowledged by the world's most popular internet search engine, Google, but online shoppers are still frustrated by the country's lack of recognition .
Google has long offered the ability to view its search in Afrikaans or Zulu. Last week it made those languages easier to access, and also added Sesotho and Xhosa versions.
But South Africans using Google's search engine to locate online retailers are still unable to buy goods if PayPal one of the world's most popular electronic payment services is used.
This is despite the fact that PayPal was invented by South African-born Elon Musk .
South Africans are unable to bid for most goods on the hugely popular eBay auction site where PayPal is the trusted method for financial transactions.
"South African residents are no longer able to open a PayPal account because we do not have the ability to support SA at this time," Paypal's website says.
"We are continuing to further research this issue and will possibly re-add SA at a later time.
"South African members who previously had an account will be able to maintain it as long as the account information does not change," the website says.
At least SA is recognised by PayPal as a potential trading nation unlike other African countries. Ask whether PayPal can be used by internet shoppers in Nigeria, Egypt or Tunisia, and the website apologises that it cannot answer the question.
PayPal works by letting buyers deposit money into an account via a credit card or bank account. The cash is then transferred into a seller's PayPal account. So it acts as a trusted third party, since the seller never sees the purchaser's banking details.
It is used in 45 countries, none of them in Africa.
"I recently wanted to purchase something on eBay and was directed to pay via PayPal," says local online shopper Ray Smith.
"But I then discovered that they do not do business with SA, though they do seem to deal with just about every other country. SA is being ostracised."
The ability to pay for goods offshore partly explains why Amazon.com is the favourite destination for South African online shoppers. Goods can be paid for by entering South African credit card details.
"EBay regards the whole of Africa as a high risk for credit card fraud and SA is tarred with the same brush," says internet researcher Arthur Goldstuck.
"It's a huge problem because most of what's for sale on eBay can only by bought through PayPal, and that applies to a range of other sites as well.
"PayPal is quick, cheap, convenient and reliable, but SA has been frozen out."
At least South African internet users can take solace in Google's increasing recognition of their online presence.
Local users previously needed to click on Google's "language tools" icon to view the site in other languages. Now a strap line offering four South African languages Sesotho, Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa automatically appears whenever Google is called up on a computer in SA.
Users entering a search request in Zulu will see exactly the same content as they did before. But now, at least, they can read Google's services such as Images, News or I'm Feeling Lucky in their own language.
"There's not a lot of internet content available in Zulu, but the simple awareness of the language preferences that Google has created could result in more energy being put into creating more content in our other languages," says Goldstuck.
Users will be glad to know that SA is one of about 100 countries for which Google tailors its pages.

I've written snotty emails on a number of occassions to paypal and rarely get a decent response - just that they are "working on it"
My old PayPal login goes to this message :-
"This account has been permanently locked with a $0.00 USD balance. All information associated with this account has been blocked from the PayPal system and cannot be registered with another account."
I let it expire, which was a bit silly, as my banking details haven't changed - I never expected PayPal to "boot" us out.

My account is still active ,I have some change left in it,But SA account holders can not renew credit card links. When current credit card expires ,can not extend it to the next expiration date.
I am not sure if it is Paypal or our banks who does not support South Africans.

I'm trying to get that answer now and have replied to a standard reply from paypal - at least I've got a real person now, even though they are cutting and pasting.
Of course, it's entirely possible that they are an outsourced Indian IT company with some automatrons working huge hours for low pay and the person I'm trying to get a response from just doesn't know anything but "cut 'n paste appropriate response"
I do feel however that it is our banks that are the problem - I'm almost certain of it now, for the simple reason that our banking charges are incredibly high and our banking sector incredibly aggressive.
Profit margins are probably far too low for PayPal to have a viable operation here or banking laws in this country may provide too much of a hastle.

Two solutions that worked quite well for me so far.
1) Get yourself and American Express Credit card - you can load this on your Paypal account, Paypal can verify it you will have no more problems.

ABSA told me that SA banks do not guarantee credit transactions overseas should the transactions be fraudulent and without your knowledge. In other words, should somebody fake a product or something on Ebay and accept payment, SA banks are unwilling to guarantee your money in case of any fraud.
Overseas banks do accept this risk and guarantee your on-line activities in order to encourage more on-line trade.
Another thing that came up in my discussions with ABSA (after losing out on a rare book deal on Ebay) was that SA foreign exchange laws also prohibits such free flow of South African money overseas. It might be that this last reason is the actual reason for the stupid situation we are in.
Cheers

Oooooo, don't even get me started on the subject of how Exchange Control Regs have ruined chances of Foreign Investment - specifically the inability to take one's money out when one needs to do so [i.e. why bring it in when you have 0 chance of getting it out].

The forex control is not a valid excuse, allowance is more than a R100grand per year now.until last year we can still use Paypal.SA banks suddenly have a forex problem !without changes in regulation
Fraud risk is valid ,but is easily controllable.
SA banks are telling more & more untrue stories to its customers.

Found a US based company called Plimus.com who let you use their secure servers for credit card billing...no monthly outlaw, but they take about 10% onn each transaction. It's a nice way to bill people overseas and have money bank transferred to you in SA. Good way to test the waters internationally when selling hosting services etc internationally, without having to pay local EFT companies a few hundred a month even if you dont make 1 sale.
