O well looks like Supa and Kule has been converted to English supporters

Funny how people support English football after awhile, guess its because its the best league in the world.

Anyone see Read how well messi did in beijing, guess not to busy worrying about what ronaldo is doing and whats happening in the english premier league.

Sad to see supporters give up on La liga so easily.

Yea supa but we live in South africa and pay a premium for Int bandwidth, We dont have 24meg uncapped lines for 20 pounds or whateva.

Dstv works out way cheaper than watching the matches online and paying through your arse for the bandwidth.

Plus watching a soccer match that buffers every 10 seconds is highly annoying.

You looking at it from a South African point of view, SA was only shown EPL for years hence they mostly EPL supporters.

Rest of the world had choice, why do you think Ronaldo's (portugal),Arshavin's (Russia) dream was to play in La liga.Even though Portugal and Russia both have top-flight leagues.

Check my earlier post about Brazil, the same goes for South America when it comes to watching european football, they watch La liga.

I say Beckham commercialized football more in America but america was always better at the game than a lot of other countries (at one point they were ranked 4th in the world). For instance I would put my money on USA to beat SA anytime.

killadoob
08-08-2008, 01:59 PM
Yea the USA may have been good but it does not mean their league was well supported by the americans, since beckham has arrived its exploding into something massive over there.

See this is another perfect example. Major league soccer was massive in America long before Beckham came.

...but when Beckham came, only then were people like you starting to notice the league.

the league was huge by then before. How do you think they could afford Beckham? America is marketing heaven. beckham didnt change anything, all he did was make LA Galaxy more famous... but as for the league, it was massive before Beckham came there.

Example of his impact in the states, when Galaxy went to play new york, there were 21,000 fewer fans than the season before.
To top it off the season before the match was played in rain.

Berbatov you have to remember is very controversial when it comes to his moods, this you know doesnt fit in well at barca as they believe you need to have respect for the team,team-mates and catalan pride.

Emery Wants Supercopa At The Bernabéu

Copa del Rey winners Valencia fought persistently to secure a 3-2 advantage against Real Madrid on Sunday evening in the Spanish Supercup first leg clash and coach, Unai Emery can be proud of his boys’ performance.

Los Ché dominated for large periods and created countless chances but still went into the break a goal down. But their fighting spirit showed as they hit back with two quick goals to lead 2-1 on the hour mark and maintained their persistence to clinch a 3-2 triumph after Ruud van Nistelrooy had equalized for the merengues.

“We are very satisfied with the outcome because we played a great game. Despite going 1-0 down, we managed to fight back and we showed more intensity, aggressiveness and the desire to win,” he told Marca after the match.

“Today we showed great balance between defence and attack. The players are still adapting but soon, we will be more offensive and in the long run, there will be more positive results than negative ones.”

Emery then singled out David Albelda for special praise after the veteran midfielder endured a nightmare last term under the previous regime: “There is a natural rapport between Albelda and the fans and they enjoyed what they have seen today.”

The 36 year old Basque-born trainer finally gave his views on what to expect in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“They are going to play to impress their own fans. But we will prepare for the game thoroughly and we want to go there not just to secure the title but also to win there. It will be a great start for us and it would unite us even more,” he concluded.

Palop: Best Sevilla Squad Yet

Palop joined up with the rojiblancos from Valencia in 2005, during which time he's played alongside the likes of Daniel Alves and Seydou Keita.

These two have since departed, but nonetheless the veteran 'keeper believes that the new additions to the squad have given the team a strength that he's yet to encounter.

""When I see the quality that's here, even in light of those that have left, it's clear that the Sevilla of today has grown a great deal," he told Marca.

"This is an impressive squad and I think it's the best one I've seen in four years."

The former Villarreal man continued, "Now we can begin a new season and hopefully we can say in the not too distant future that this year's Sevilla is the best of all time."

In order to do that, he feels that the Andalucían side must make a concerted push to rejoin the top four.

"The team must go step by step, but the main goal is the Champions League. Should we succeed in this important task, we'll benefit greatly," he continued.

"But I'm also aware that if you're among the top four, as we were for two seasons, you can have the chance to fight for more, so of course we must go for the Liga."

In closing Palop responded to Joseba Llorente of Villarreal, who felt that Sevilla's aggression could create problems.

"That doesn't bother me - we'll continue on our path," shrugged the 'keeper.

"Those kind of words give me the feeling that people are starting to fear Sevilla."

19:00 Racing - Sevilla
19:00 Numancia - Barcelona
19:00 Osasuna - Villarreal
21:00 Deportivo - R. Madrid

RCD Espanyol - Real Valladolid

It's hardly the most glamourous of matches, but fans of Spanish football worldwide can't wait for this one, for the 78th season of the LFP is about to begin.

Tintín Márquez's Espanyol ended last season in disastrous fashion and are eager to get their fans back on side, but with question marks still hanging over the squad this could be a nervy occasion.

For coach Mendilibar of Valladolid, meanwhile, survival is job one. The Pucela only just scraped through the relegation race last season: games such as this will give his side a chance to smash-and-grab some vital points early on.

Valencia CF - RCD Mallorca

Also on Saturday night one can see Unai Emery's Valencia attempt to impress against a Mallorca side that's changed drastically over the summer.

Drastically, that is, but not quite as much as Los Che, who have altered their manager, president, image, directors, and anything else you can think of - except the squad, which still contains David Villa, David Silva, and even David Albelda.

Mallorca kept their manager but altered pretty much everytime else. Some of last season's key players - not least Jonás Gutíerrez and Dani Güiza - have sought pastures new, but coach Gregorio Manzao has some fresh, new signings to select from, too. In other words, expect the unexpected here.

Athletic Club Bilbao - UD Almería

Moving through to Sunday and Athletic Club meet Almería at San Mames. The Basque cauldron is well-known for being a hotbed of partisan support, but there may be a few boos and whistles tomorrow after fans' favourite Aritz Aduriz was sold on to Mallorca.

Even some of the players have questioned the wisdom of this move, but at least coach Joaquín Caparrós seems fine with it. His side finished last season strongly, and despite a questionable pre-season he's looking for more of the same.

Gonzalo Arconada has a tough act to follow as Almería coach, Emery having departed for Valencia. Still, his squad has been bolstered by the likes of Pablo Piatti, who could be in line for a competitive debut in a rojiblanco shirt.

Club Atlético de Madrid - Málaga CF

Having thrashed Schalke 4-0 midweek, Atleti simply could not be in higher spirits ahead of this Vicente Calderón encounter.

It's been another summer of bizarre transfer rumours and bizarre-r signings for the rojiblancos - but then, when is it not? - but one that's borne fruit as the colchoneros finally, finally return to the Champions League.

Málaga, meanwhile, are back in the top flight for the first time since 2006, although it seems like an age to the Rosaleda faithful, accustomed as they are to Primera football.

Buoyed by the return of club hero Duda, as well as some impressive signings like Fernando Fernández, they may just pull off a shock.

Real Betis Balompié - Recreativo de Huelva

Betis, the soap opera-cum-football club, are ready for an Andalucían derby to kick off the new season. It's been a typically eventful summer in the Triana, with erstwhile owner Manuel Ruiz de Lopera being in court (again) and no end of transfer drama taking place.

Still, for all the gossip there's been little movement. Rafael Sobis remains, and so do some so-called "released" players. Paco Chaparro's squad, though, has at least been bolstered by the ambitious acquisitions of Mehmet Aurelio and Nélson.

Recre would kill for players of such calibre in a summer that's seen them lose top scorer Florent Sinama-Pongolle and gain bargain-basement signings in return. Still, some of the incoming players - not least Sisi and Marco Rubén - have something to prove and could be surprise packages.

Real Sporting de Gijón - Getafe CF

Spanish football fans could argue black is white, but if there's one thing everyone in any given bar agrees on, it's that nobody wants to start a season with a trip to El Molinón.

The Asturian arena, a venerable old pile of some 100 years' use, will shake to its very foundations as the rojiblancos return to the top flight for the first time in a decade.

Getafe, no strangers to the journey north from their time in the Segunda, will nonetheless be in high spirits, given that Roberto Soldado is in line for his competitive debut in a blue shirt.

Víctor Muñoz, the new manager, has to win over the fans - a win here would go a long way towards doing that.

Real Racing Club - Sevilla CF

Last season's surprise package, Racing, will give Sevilla a tough test at the Sardinero. The verdiblancos have just been drawn against FC Honka Espoo of Finland in the UEFA Cup - a decent tie for them, and one that could see them through to the group stages.

Sevilla, for their part, got Salzburg in their clash - a game that coach Manolo Jiménez will deem eminently winnable.

Still, he'll first of all want to get off to a winning start here. The Nervión side lost three of their major stars over the course of the summer but nonetheless look the part thanks to some canny acquisitions.

Racing, meanwhile, didn't quite have the transfer window that they would have wanted, and with coach Marcelino having left for Zaragoza, Juan Ramón López Muñiz has some hard work on his hands.

CD Numancia - FC Barcelona

Little Numancia of Soria managed the Segunda championship last season for the first time in their history, capping their third overall promotion to the top flight.

This team, which survives on average gates of around 5,500, draws on a huge, rural area, and as such there's plenty of local pride right across the region. Whether that's enough to keep them up is another matter.

Barcelona are refreshed and renewed under new boss Josep 'Pep' Guardiola, and they will be absolutely itching to get off to a winning start away from home - something they failed to do last season.

Unusually the squad is virtually fully-fit, so the Pajaritos fans could be treated to the likes of Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi as they look for only their second season of survival in the Primera (and their fourth overall.)

CA Osasuna - Villarreal CF

Last season's runners-up Villarreal have been drawn against Manchester United, Celtic and Aalborg in the Champions League. A match against the European champions, then, is cause for distraction at the Madrigal.

Still, there's little room for such considerations as the Yellow Submarine look to atone for what's been an awful summer. It's been fine off the pitch as the squad's depth has been improved, but pre-season friendlies have been virtually all terrible.

Osasuna, then, will be quietly confident of a shock. The Pamplona outfit have established themselves as a mid-table side of late and while they may not be ready for a push up the table they are capable of starting well, not least at the Reyno de Navarra.

RC Deportivo de La Coruña - Real Madrid CF

Moving to the final game of the weekend, champions Real Madrid have the journey that they love to hate: a trip to the Riazor.

The capital side are 'cursed' up north, having failed to win a single Liga game there since the 1992-93 season. What's more, SuperDepor have actually won the last five!

Miguel Angel Lotina's side are in a good mood after their midweek UEFA Cup success, but they still can't rely just on tradition: after all, a look at the Madrid teamsheet, and then a glance at Depor's, spells out the relative strengths.

Still, the blancos are distracted by "Robinhogate." Will he go, or won't he? It may be after Sunday night's game before we know.

Messi: It’s Not Kun Versus Leo

Saturday’s La Liga main event will pit not just two of the most entertaining and attacking-minded teams in Spain, but also inarguably two of the most exciting and lethal young forwards in football today.

Barcelona will square off with Atlético Madrid in a clash that the press have already dubbed a showdown between Argentines’ Lionel Messi and Sergio Kun Agüero. But the Blaugrana superstar wants to make it clear that the encounter at the Camp Nou is more than just Kun vs. Messi.

“There will be many great players in that game and it is not necessary to think of it only as a duel between Kun and Messi,” he told reporters.

“Atlético are already demonstrating that they are a strong team, even in the Champions League and I think it will be a very tough game,” Messi added.

The 21 year old then brushed off the notion that the team relies on him far too much, in light of his goal scoring heroics last weekend against Espanyol and then again four days later at Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Barça always plays as a team and I am just another member of the squad.

“You just have to look at the way we move to realize that we all rely on each other and it’s easier to win that way than if we were to depend on just one player.

“Xavi, for instance, is also an impressive footballer and he always provides great passes,” he explained.

Finally, the discussion returned to the subject of Agüero and their new but blossoming partnership with the Argentine national side.

“We work well together, we like playing together and we have great understanding on the pitch.

“We are good friends and we want the best for each other, but with our clubs, we only want our own teams to win,” concluded Messi.

Another controversial talking point:

Real Madrid get the reverse fixture of Barca's from the previous round of matches every time?

Clearly this gives them an edge cos most teams will look to attack Barca and Real the same way.

So Real Madrid can see how the teams played against Barca and have an advantage when they play that team the following week.

This is rubbish!

We Have Benefited From Dinho And Deco Sales - Messi
Lionel Messi has spoken about today about the sales of Ronaldinho and Deco this summer and said that the club has benefited from losing them because they play the ball more...
»Comments (18) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Ronaldinho and Deco were once hailed as the best players to grace the Camp Nou pitch but in their final season at the club both suffered from injury and off the field affairs and left at a low point.

Lionel Messi however has continued to reign supreme at Barcelona and speaking today he says that the loss of the Brazilian and the Portuguese player has benefited the club.

"Without them the play of Barcelona has changed and we have all benefited from it because we play the ball more," he said.

The Argentine does not have any bad feelings for them though and says when talking about Ronaldinho that he is a 'phenomenon' both as a footballer and a person. He also ponders why Andrés Iniesta is not in the list for the Balon D'Or this year, saying, "I do not understand why, he is a monster."

Indeed, both Iniesta and Messi have been in superb form for Barcelona this season so far and have helped the club to win nine games on the spin now. Even that has not seen them reach the top of the table though and Messi acknowledged that this season has just begun and then outlined the best teams in his eyes.

"Real Madrid are the favourites," he said, "Sevilla and Valencia are doing well though and Villarreal play the best football, next to Barcelona."

Messi is one of the nominees for the Balon D'Or and is vying to be the first Argentine to win the trophy without having to adopt another nationality.

10 Reasons Why Madrid Will Win Nothing
Paul Macdonald offers a provocative list of why he thinks that Real Madrid are in for a silverware drought in 2008-2009...
»Comments (515) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Let's just start by saying that Real Madrid are still the team to beat in La Liga this season.

They were Champions in 2006/07 as Beckham said bon voyage and they held their nerve on the last game of Capello’s tenure.

They were Champions last season convincingly as Barcelona toiled towards the end of the Rijkaard era.

They have set the benchmark; it is up to the rest to dethrone Los Merengues.

But things just don’t appear to be running smoothly at the Bernabeu currently. The well-oiled cogs that aided the romp to the title in 2007/08 have shown signs of losing motion. The derby victory over Atletico and the heavy 7-1 victory over Sporting Gijon merely paper over the cracks that the defeat to Juventus, draw at home to Espanyol and loss at the Riazor threatened to expose. Real Madrid will be trophy-less at the end of the 2008/09 campaign, and these are the reasons why.

1) The Challenge is stronger.

Despite the unequivocal fact that Madrid were the strongest side in Liga last season, Villarreal aside, there was no consistent challenger to knock them from their stride. Barcelona were all over the place from Christmas time until the end of the season, Valencia were clueless under Koeman, and Sevilla couldn’t cope with the exertions of their first foray into the Champions League. This season, however, it is all change; Sevilla only have UEFA cup football and have managed to survive a midfield reshuffle with their rhythm remaining intact. Expectations at Valencia were low due to the debacle of last season, but they have made the best start to a campaign in their history, and with David Villa firing on all cylinders, they will have a major say on the destination of the title. Then we have Villarreal who were worthy second last season, and but for a dreadful start could have fared better. They have started this season as they ended the last – winning matches. The form of these sides has created a log jam of sides jostling at the top of the table. Madrid glanced down from the top for almost the entire season last year – to look up and see good sides performing well has a psychological effect on the way a side approaches a match.
And let’s not forget Barcelona.

2) Barcelona are back.

After the lack of discipline that was all too apparent eventually caused the Blaugrana to implode last season, many were unsure that the appointment of an inexperienced coach such as Pep Guardiola was the correct option. They needn't have worried. After a shaky start, Barcelona are positively flying, clinically tearing through teams with brutal efficiency. Messi is in the form of his short career. Xavi and Iniesta are establishing themselves as two of the greatest players in the world. And Samuel Eto'o, thought to be on his way out of the Nou Camp in the summer, is top scorer in the league and looking unplayable again. After demolishing everyone in their wake, how can Madrid even begin to cope with that attacking quartet?

3) The defence is suspect

Especially with a back four as unreliable as this. Yes, they have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, and they have a World Player of the Year centre-half in Cannavaro, but the whole is not represented by the sum of its parts. Heinze has had a dreadful start to the season, out of position constantly and looks to be out of his depth. Pepe is an accident waiting to happen almost every week - unpredictability is not a positive characteristic for a defender to employ yet this guy has 'mistake' stamped all over his erratic performances. Perhaps most worrying is the stroppy antics of Sergio Ramos. On a par with any defender in the world, but appears unhappy and undervalued by Schuster.

4) The midfield offer little protection

Not all the blame can lie with the defence for Madrids record of two clean sheets in 15 games. The midfield, as flair-filled and flamboyant as it is, concentrate too heavily on the positive and ignore their defensive duties. They can still outscore the majority of sides in La Liga, but against quality attackers such as Sevilla or Barcelona, Pepe and Cannavaro will be brutally exposed. Schuster knows this, but Diarra can't screen them on his own - he needs the others to muck in and chase back.

5) Unrest in the dugout and behind the scenes

Madrid have always had a penchant for firing managers - 19 manager changes in 21 seasons tell its own story, and rumour has it Schuster is on a sticky wicket with the top brass, particularly Predrag Mijatovic. The Ronaldo saga also left a bad taste in the mouth, and left Madrid, a club who always get the man they are after, without the man they were after. Alex Ferguson had the cheek to admit as much - and got labelled 'old' by Calderon. The Chairman really should show some manners. A war of words with Fergie is the last thing he needs.

6) Their Champions League record is poor

Yes,we all know the club's history in the European cup, but their last victory was in 2002 and they have done precious little of note since. Juventus, Arsenal, Bayern, and Roma have defeated them in the first knockout round in the last four seasons, an unacceptable run for a club with such heritage. With that record behind them, and their dissapointing loss in Turin to Juventus this season, it looks unlikely they will get anywhere near the Stadio Olympico in Rome for this years final. There are simply better teams in Europe at the moment.

7) Raul is past his best

The Spaniard has shown flickers of his greatness this season, but his legs have gone. He can be completely anonymous for long spells of the match and simply can't play as a lone striker any longer with the way that Madrid's formation is set up. He can still be an excellent impact player from the bench, but cannot be seen as a replacement to Van Nistelrooy should the Dutchman be unavailable. Higuain is emerging, but can't be the focal point of the team just yet, and Saviola may as well not be there at all, such is his lack of first team action. If - and it is a big if - Van Nistelrooy suffers a lack of form, the legendary forward is not up to the task of spearheading the attacking play.

8) Coach, we need wingers!

Robben is the only true wide midfielder at the club, and 'The Glass Man', as he is dubbed, is incapable of staying fit for an extended period. Higuain has performed a decent job deployed on the wings, but he recently spoke of his desire to play a more central role. Sneijder and Van Der Vaart drive from central midfield, while Guti, Diarra and Ruben De La Red all prefer to sit in the middle of the park. This at times makes Madrid an extremely narrow opponent, relying heavily on their full backs to get forward. There is no Roberto Carlos in this team though to be able to assist in both defence and attack.

9) They have been fortunate so far to have the points they do.

A 96th minute penalty in the Vicente Calderon.
A last-minute Van Nistelrooy goal against Betis, while playing with ten men.
Espanyol missing sitters in the 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu.
Marcelo not being red carded, and Llorente smashing the post in the dying seconds against Athletic Bilbao.

Madrid have rode their luck slightly. Is it the mark of champions, or will the rub of the green run out on Schuster?

10) Cristiano Ronaldo stayed in Manchester.

David Villa stayed at Valencia, Santi Cazorla stayed at Villarreal, and with the exception of Van der Vaart, no-one wanted to come to the Bernabeu in the summer. A lack of fresh faces can breed lethargy, with no new talent to perk up the battle for a first team slot. Madrid need a galactico.

I prepare myself for a backlash from the Madrid faithful. Your comments, please.

Paul Macdonald .

On a day where France was left embarrassed by its players’ performance in the Ballon d’Or voting, national team head coach, Raymond Domenech, has praised the Spanish style of play, which led to seven players from the country being named in Europe’s top 25.

Valencia Will Consider Offers For David Villa, If Huge

Spanish club Valencia have admitted that they may have to consider selling their star players due to their poor state of finances, according to a report in the British broadsheet the Independent.

"Whatever offer comes in we will have to study it although the idea is not to have to sell David Villa or David Silva," stated Fernando Gomez Colomer, the club's sporting vice-president.

He continued: "It would have to be an exorbitant offer."

That news could alert Premier League money-men Manchester City who are more than capable of tabling the kind of bid that might be needed to land David Villa.

The Citizens have been linked with the Spanish international striker since their Abu Dhabi owners arrived in August and announced their intentions to establish the club as a top European force with the spectacular capture of Robinho.

While Los Che have fought to keep their prized asset, club president Vicente Soriano admitted: "We will fight to give the club the economic stability that it needs. Right now that is the most important thing - more than any kind of sporting success."

Barca looked a bit flat last night. Messi wasnt even on the bench. Mallorca scored 1st. Barca dominated the game from the start, so it was a surprise for Mallorca to take the lead. Thier goal was brilliant tho.

Henry scored the equaliser. When Pep introduced Alves and Iniesta (1st game back, the fans shouted louder than when Henry equalised when he took the pitch) the game started to develop.

Iniesta scored the second, Toure -every week he shows how brilliant he is. Scored the thrid with some fancy footwork in the box.

Barcelona 3 - 1 Mallorca

Next test: Spanish cup in the week, Barca will face Atletico Madrid.

Maradona To Barcelona: Keep This Up And Titles Will Come

Barca’s superlative style of attacking football has found another admirer, and it could not have been a more mythical figure.

“You are an example for all. You must continue playing like this. I want to congratulate you because what you’re doing has great merit and it allows everyone to enjoy football,” Maradona was quoted as saying

Barca lead the league by a massive 15 points. I am turning my attention to the CL - we are already La Liga champions, i dont see Barca stopping - they broke the leagues record tonight with most wins up until the half way mark of the season.

First team to EVER reach that many points.

A piece of Messi brilliance to save the match against Ossasuns. Barca were down 2 - 0. They fought their way back in the last 10 minutes to make it 2 - 2.

Then Messi stepped up in the 85th minute and did this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vu3gYSrDXM

Barcelona Have Green Light From Valencia's David Villa

Reports today claim that the striker has given his agent Jose Luis Tamargo the verbal OK, and that he has been in constant touch with Barcelona technical director, Txiki Begiristain.

Now, all that remains is for Pep Guardiola to agree on the matter, and the two clubs will begin negotiations for the player

He's said a few times he wants to end his career in MLS. Maybe if Miami were to get a team he would go play there as their one international player.

I have read somewhere he did mention he wants to play in the US.

SuPaStA
06-02-2009, 11:12 AM
Back in 2007 he told the New York Times:

"I always say that one day I can play over there," Henry said. "I would love to. It's still early.

"Don't get me wrong, I just love the U.S. I don't know why. I love the way you live. I love American sports. For me, it's a dream to go to training and then see a game of football, basketball, whatever game. For me, New York is the best city in the world."

This is the only comment his made about american "soccer".

Though this was before Pep and before Barca were planning on opening a Barcelona Franchise.
I think it would be a waste if he goes there, look at Beckham getting his lawyers to try and keep him in europe.
