Sir Alex Ferguson's injury concerns are beginning to ease as United prepare to kick off 2008/09 on Sunday in the Community Shield clash with Portsmouth.

The squad for Wembley will be bolstered by the return of Michael Carrick - the midfielder trained on Thursday after recovering from the virus that also waylaid Wayne Rooney.

"Carrick trained yesterday for the first time and I'm taking him to Wembley," said Sir Alex.

"Hopefully I'll give him some minutes on the pitch. If he is feeling good then we have to get some minutes on the clock for him ahead of next week against Newcastle."

Wayne Rooney is now also clear of the virus but he returned to training only today (Friday) after missing every session since the Reds returned from Africa on 28 July.

"We have a big job to get him ready for Newcastle," said Sir Alex, "but with seven or eight days training, we may just make it now. He's much better and the medical reports are good.

"Gary Neville and Nani are fit and they will travel. Nani will probably start on Sunday because he is suspended for the first two league games of the season.

"Owen Hargreaves is not ready. He should be OK for Portsmouth away (on Monday 25 August), that's the time frame we've put on it.

"Ben Foster had a bit of swelling in his knee which you can sometimes get after a cruciate knee injury. We're trying to manage that but he's not ready yet to play in games. It's unfortunate for the lad because he was looking forward to an uninterrupted run."

Neville And Carrick To Feature In Community Shield

Injury ravaged Manchester United will take Michael Carrick and Gary Neville to the Community Shield this Sunday, despite concerns over their respective fitness.

Neville has scarcely featured for United over the past 18 months and has seen his right-back berth surrendered to Wes Brown. However, the club captain will travel to Wembley this Sunday as Sir Alex Ferguson take the opportunity to run the rule over his depleted charges.

Also expected to feature against FA Cup winners Portsmouth is midfielder Michael Carrick. The ex-West Ham star has featured on United’s pre-season preparations but picked up a virus while in Nigeria. Wayne Rooney however, is not expected to take the field as he recovers from a more serious bout of the sickness.

Ferguson will field Portuguese winger Nani, as he is suspended for the Premier League kick-off against Newcastle.

"They need some minutes on the clock before the start of the season,” the United manager told the press.

"The Community Shield is a prestigious match but I have used players in it who were not quite fit and we are more or less in the same situation again."

United have something approaching a veritable injury crisis at the moment, Owen Hargreaves is not expected to return to first team action until the league match with Pompey in the second week of the season. Ben Foster will also be absent with a swollen knee.

Of the England goalkeeper’s problem, Ferguson said: "You can suffer this kind of thing from time to time when you have had a cruciate operation.

"We are trying to manage the swelling but he is not ready to take part in any games. It is unfortunate for the lad because he was looking forward to the new season."

One of the most uninspiring games of football I've watched in a very long time.

Pompey's penalies, well, I have no words actually :D

MUnited created alot of chances. Sure they were not playing fantastic football but thats what you expect in a match like this with these two teams. Do you ever recall a "fantastic" MUnited Vs. Pompey match ?
