what is the best/most efficient connection to use when playing these new titles such as doom3, half-life2, and especially world of warcraft?

ISDN most likely.

Also depends on the time of day and so forth. This port prioritization is a real gamers nightmare! But the local servers are comming along fine and new ones pop up every day... games.saix.net is also a good place to start...
Browse this forum, you are bound to find some suprising stuff! ADSL can be a gamers best friend if you take into concideration the bonus of being always connected... The difference comes in with overseas PINGS. On ISDN the overseas Pings tend to be faster... But they are not too bad with ADSL either. If you manage the time you go on, you might be surprised... Local servers make this argument irrelevant... ADSL kicks ass then!
World of WARCRAFT will be a financial drag on ISDN unless you have unlimited funds! I don't think MMRPG will be much of a problem over ADSL...

The most efficient connection is ISDN, the pings aren't too bad, but most importantly there is almost no packet loss. The problem with ADSL is that you get a GREAT ping, but packet loss usualy can be upwards of 30% making most MMORPG games impossible to play.

ADSL is fine for MMOGs, even during the day I can access and play a game (MMORPG) located in Sweden called ProjectEntropia.
I didn't try it with games like Battlefied, or CS yet as I don't play those, but I gues you will need local servers for those.

the only problem with i have will be with world of warcraft because there wont be any local game servers is south africa!(that are up2 date with blizzard that is).but im positive that MMORPG's will run fine as they are not as bad as FPS games.

you wouldn`t get too well to play world of warcraft
i`m have been using adsl to play games call jy-online
and ragnarok online from south africa. (server is in taiwan)
you will face a lot of delay (lag), when you try to kill something
it only appear after 1-2 sec. and belive me this will rune the gameplay.
i have saw the WOW preview. it looks like the game i was playing.
i can only say, good luck then if u wish to give a try when WOW
is out^_^

They'll probably give you a 7 day trial when it launches anyway, like most MMORPGs, so you'll get a good idea then. They will however, usually require your credit card details anyway, which might scare some off.
I unfortunately agree that i don't think its gonna be a worthwhile gaming experience from SA, which is a shame as i've yet to play a bad game from Blizzard, and Warcraft3 is probably my fav all-time game.

I am a bit of a MMORPG junkie. I had to dump my ADSL because it was soooo bad at handeling them. I use MyInternetless now and it works really well. Currently playing Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies and starting City of Heroes. Very happy with it, and I have no doubt that World of Warcraft will be just as good.
However, please read the MyWireless forums before jumoping in on it. A significant (lots) of people are having big problems with it, although hopefully these will be resolved soon. For me however, it is working brilliantly.

Gouged, thats pretty good news. I didn't think MyWi would handle any games that well, but at least you seem to be going ok with MMORPGs. I currently use ISDN and can't wait 2 give Telscum the boot, but it looks like it'll be awhile b4 Sentech sort out their probs. Plus, no tower planned in the near future in my area [:(]
Also, i play FPShoooters quite a bit, and i think MyWi will not handle that genre very well.
Why oh why is everything so complicated, lol. I just wanna plug in and play, AAARGH!

Yeah, FPS aren't too rosy at all. Sometimes playable, but not competative. Thats why I keep ISDN as a backup for FPS. I find I spend waaaaaaaaaaaay much more time on any MMORPG than FPS.
Played City of Heroes all last night with 2 people connecting through a 128k and it worked really nicely.

Sorry, but I have to completely disagree. Your problems are ADSL. Try play the same games on ISDN or 56k for that matter (or MyInternetless) and they work fine.
I currently play SWG, DAoC and CoH. No significant lag problems. I will be very very suprised if WoW is different.

Adsl on local servers is perfect for games. I play CS and normally sit with a ping of 20-30.

Hello,
I play a game called Empire Earth. With my standard dial-up I can play on overseas with no lag!!! It obviously depends on which games I play as you have to choose them properly. With my modem I can get a latency of around 400ms to servers in the USA. I have just ordered my ISDN line and with the right ISP you can expect to get around 280ms... BUT that is as good as it will get.
ISDN for local gaming will probably net you around 50ms if you have a good connection and a good ISP. Just to let you know... the ISP that you choose can actually make a very BIG difference to your latency...

Can any1 tell me if there is anyway to make wow go through a socks proxy?
I can't play in the evenings, and my daytime latency is unbearable

Here is a site where you can check a socks proxy and check if it tunnels.
http://proxylabs.netwu.com/proxychecker.html
Its also got the app that you can download to tunnel..
Ive had no luck in tunneling with Steam but try with WOW and let me know if it works please. Can you Order wow yet from SA?
The ip I used for testing is 68.164.252.150
Please let me know if it works and on what games.

tunneling to overseas ip on shaped connection wont make it better, in fact it will be worse with the extra latency overhead from that ip to the server.
From within SA hitting the international gateway, your ADSL get shaped.. the connection you make to overseas socks server is shaped aswell then.

You can use an application called sockscap32 on the client side. Every1 who uses my proxy uses that. And you can order WoW from me on woworder.webhop.net (http://woworder.webhop.net)

I have experienced WoW on the following:
56k modem - Playable, but you won't be able to do Battlegrounds or 40-player raids... the bandwidth requirements become rediculous and causes your latency to climb sky-high.
ISDN64 - Same as above, except you will be able to play Warsong Gulch BG, which is a 20 player BG.
ADSL shaped - If you're a serious online gamer, don't get this. For at least 6 days per month you'll be totally unable to play. Thank you Telkom... 6 days out of 30 equals 20% downtime per month, which is ridiculous!!!
ADSL unshaped - This is what I have (www.saol.com), and is one of the best options available for people wishing to play games on international servers. Latency is always consistent, and the bandwidth is very acceptable as well.

you forgot to mention the exorbiant price tag for this service. ISDN 128 is good enough for any WoW sessions although i have not encountered any large gatherings online...

And you can order WoW from me on woworder.webhop.net Unshaped accounts are the way to go, if its to expensive for you (like it is for me) then Nukecap is the way to go, its the best option other than a unshaped account. I've tried everthing out there and welcome you to try the same if you dont believe me
you forgot to mention the exorbiant price tag for this service. ISDN 128 is good enough for any WoW sessions although i have not encountered any large gatherings online... Hmm play 192 hours of WoW this month and compare your ISDN bill to my ADSL bill, its all relative to what you use the line for.
Lastly Squish102.. No offence you've made 6 posts on these forums and 4 of them are trying to sell your WoW games.. Most of them today. Small advertising is fine.. but dont push it!... or I will burn 1000 copies of my CD's hand them out for free and give everyone the web address to buy legal keys for R300.. R150 cheaper than you!

its called infinitcall and i got no worries about caps with ISDN neither... and i did choose ISDN over ADSL solely for the reason to play on international servers... and it performs very well on the 64 player BF2 servers too. :)

doesn't infinitcall only work from 7-7 though? which I guess is fine, though as mentioned.. I had a weeks leave.. so basically with that I wouldn't of been able to do anything with my internet during the day as it would cost way to much way to quick

I get my unshaped ADSL for R399 per month capped at 3GB. SAOL changed their deal to R499 per month for 4GB. It's not that expensive, really. I'd gladly pay it so that I am able to actually play anytime of the day, anytime of the month, no problems.

But Guys there must be away todo this with your shaped even , Like these peer 2 peer proggies.. I use Limewire and I set the incoming and outgoing port of it to 80.. ADSL shaped just basically means that it got fast speeds on port 80,21,25, etc.

You can set your ports.. You cant with games. What makes it worse is some ISP's in the USA used to set priority to ports used by Games, until the P2P junkies caught onto this :(
EDIT:
Oh Yster, thats your ISP portion.. how much do you pay Telscum!

my issue with the 4GB cap from the SAOL would be that i also play and download stuff of the net... in ONE weekend of being online since 7PM Friday till Monday 6AM i usually end up with almost 1.5GB of data IN and 400MB of data out. Thats 2GB in one weekend... ADSL unshaped for that is too expensive...
just BF2 alone per hour takes up almost 80MB up and down... vicious online game that one... both for me and the ISDN... :)

On my ADSL it uses up 35-50MB/hour...Are you sure that reading is correct?

Do you have miracle ISDN or is it 128k? lol 80MB / hr traffic on ISDN 64k is insanely high working on 27mb / hr max down.

Well, i think i'm staying put on ISDN128k, too much possible crap still happening.
Pay telkom line rentscam, Pay isp, pay telkom for voice line rentscam.
And then, to bring down your latency, pay for a proxy service.
I think i still have the best option going.

lol! Its ISDN 128K.... as for total BF2 data usage i will have to find some kind of tool to keep a log of data flow... i know per se that per hour i can download 60MB, ie. 1MB per minute. Upload should be similar too...
Still, seeing all the issues ADSL users have been having since the beginning of August i will keep my ISDN until the speed/cap/shape/unshaped issues are sorted out by Telkom.
