Hello all. I've just recently signed up with neotel (prime). i'm struggling to get above the 200kbs mark.... O.S = windows XP. I see a month ago there was talk about people experiencing the same problem. Have you guys managed to find a solution. Is it indeed XP that to blame? Bit torrent advises a static ip address? Can somebody please help....
Tx.

Have you checked your signal on the modem? Make sure you have at least three bars otherwise it is probably the signal that is to blame. Also try moving the modem around as a 30cm difference in my modem position can mean a 200-400kbps increase in speed. Oh yes and make sure the modem says EVDO on it and not 1X.

I am on Windows Vista, and I myself cannot download more than 150 KB/S. Sites downloading slow, google takes a bit of time...

I would recommend you try download something locally with a download manager.
try downloading Ubuntu from www.mirror.ac.za, and report your speeds also try www.speedtest.net

150 KB/s
is a pretty good speed Richard the post above is talking about not reaching speeds of 200Kbps (note the lower case b) which is almost 1/10th of the speed you are getting.

4kb upload speed! erg. Thats the thing with wireless - it is so unstable. Even tho its uncapped, and even tho you have 2.4mbps in theory youre speed can vary from 10kb/s to 200kb/s without your signal changing, just from minute to minute.

The timeouts and fluctuations irratate me too much. Id be very interested in Neotel once they bring out an ADSL UNCAPPED offering. Then id happily sign for 24months if the price was right.

150kb/s is very good.
All I get with Sentech is 28kb/s.

I constantly get around 1Mbps, with no aerials. I do use getright/flashget/wget by default, in threaded mode, depending on the OS i'm using at the time.

Not to be picky, but guys you really need to start posting using the correct units of measurement. Kbps (lowercase b) is Kilo bits and is 1/8th of KBps (uppercase B) Kilo Bytes. Posting in the incorrect measurements only serves to confuse everyone reading the post. I realise that this may seem petty, but its like trying to explain that the garage down the road is 100 m away by telling someone it is 100 km away. I think you can all agree that this would not be a very effective means of communicating a measurement.

Is that 16kbps as in kilobits (i.e. 2 kilobytes per second)??? Cause if that's the case, you now have the lowest speed I have ever heard of on a broadband device.

Edit: Come to think of it, that's the slowest speed I've ever heard of on any internet device.

That's why when someone on this forum asks if he/she should go for Neotel 99% of the answers is NO.....!!!!.

Multi-threaded downloads. Get FreeDownloadManager and download from a site which supports 'resume' then tell it to do at 4 connections - you should see 4 x 40kbps speed (hopefully).

what??? so you'd prefer to not have resumable, multi-threaded downloads? Thats like buying a PS3 and putting it on a 37cm CRT TV.

On a good note, I'm now sure CT has something to rival durban poison :)

Wireless really makes it so much more complicated.

@ Neotel rep - Are they ever gonna increase the upload speed to 300kbps. its the only thing that makes the Prime offering so distasteful. A decent Upload speed is really important to all of us, I think we should all log a petition with as many users as possible and get Neotel to take notice and increase the upload speeds.

Hopefully next week I will get my Wilson amp and glass mount antenna and will be able to really put the connection through its theoretical maximum of 2.4mb. If I get perfect reception and bad speeds then I wont be too impressed. I might just buy a Dovado wireless router and have an open free wireless hotspot in my complex. that should chew through some gigs :D
