I would like to discuss with you the current state of south africa's connectivity.
The information I got is from the following articles and links
http://www.suntimes.co.za/2002/05/19/business/surveys/survey14.asp
http://free.financialmail.co.za/report/telkomcable/atelkom.htm
http://www.safe-sat3.co.za/SystemInformation/SystemInformation.asp
We have 2 major cables that service this country
SAT-3/WASC 120Gb
SAFE 130Gb
SAT2 47Gb
I could not find specs on the SAT2 Cable and I dont know if its in use anymore. All I could find is that SAT3 has 2.52 times the capacity of SAT2.
with regards to SAT3 one article states that "Telkom has invested 13% of the total costs but has access to almost 21% of the total capacity"
The cost of the cable is 640 million US$ The sunday times article states that telkoms saves in the region of 300 million US$ a year by using the SAT3 cable. The service started on May 25 2002 and was inaugurated on May 27 of the same year.
After a 2 year period telkom has saved 600 Million UD$ for an initial outlay of 84 Million US$, that's overall difference of 516 million US$. The bandwidth they have access to on the cable is 21% of capacity which is 25.2 Gb. Even if the system is running at only quarter capacity which I suspect it is (ie using only one of the 4 optical strands) that still leaves us with 6.3 Gb. All of this does not even factor in the legacy SAT2 system, which I think we have exclusive access to, or satellite links.
My question is, where do we see the bandwidth? Where do we see a cost save? Last time I checked the total south african bandwidth (international) was in the hundreds of megabit region. Nowhere near even one gigabit.
Any comments?
